Our nation. Our great nation. Our great, but imperfect nation. The ideals our nation holds so close to its heart. Have we forgotten them? Have we forgotten what our soldiers were fighting for? Have we forgotten the path our forefathers paved out of love for those who hadn’t even swallowed their first breaths on earth. Have we become so lost in the dredges of life, in our problems and opinions, that the path isn’t even in sight anymore? Lost...lost is a strange word. Lost is troubled, but not hopeless. We stand tall and steady, like Lady Liberty who holds her torch with pride. Similar to the corroded metal that changed the statue from copper to green, we are not the same as before. We’ve evolved and time has manipulated us, but we are still here. We will not be moved or shaken. Our base may as well be rooted ten feet deep into the dirt that our ancestors were buried in. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from france, uniting us under the name of freedom. A title that we grasped and never let go of. We live thankful every day for this title. In doing a close reading of Heather Christle’s “Five Poems for America”, we can see how the author uses metaphors to portray a flawed American, specifically within its political system, religion, obsession with technology and basic human rights. It is said that when one begins something that others will follow behind you and in George Washington's case that is correct. George Washington paved the way for many other presidents that followed after him up until the one we currently have today. Without our first president we would not have our current president. George Washington made huge contributions and achievements to our country that still stand today.

All citizens should be able to look upon their flag with pride and glory. They should feel as though it unites them as a nation. Without a doubt, the current flag of Australia does nothing of the sort. It has become an anachronic symbol of the nation which poorly represents our society through the total disregard for the Indigenous Australians and their heritage. Not only does it suggest that we are a part of a colonial relationship, but it is constantly confused and associated with other countries with similar flag designs. The reconstruction Era is the time after the civil war when we started to form ourselves as a complete united country. The civil war ended in April of 1865, and Abraham Lincoln was sadly assassinated less than a week later. Reconstruction was Lincoln’s idea, and he was largely anti-slavery, so his plan for reconstruction involved all states to draft new state constitutions that completely abolished slavery. It was his ultimate goal to reunited our nation after the war. Unfortunately, after his death, Lincoln’s vice president, Andrew Johnson, took over, and introduced a different plan for reconstruction. He said that states had to take a vow to abolish slavery before they could be readmitted into the nation, but after that, horrible black codes
A common error that people make is that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th our national Independence day in the United States, but the truth is that the document was only approved on July 2nd and wasn’t even signed until August 2nd. The document was signed by 56 colonial delegates, and was used to explain why they want to break free from Britain. This document consists of 4 parts, statement of purpose, the contract theory of government, grievances, and the conclusion, the two major parts are the contract theory of government, grievances; they make up the bulk of the document. The colonists wanted to officially split from Britain due to the many unjust things Britain had done. The Declaration of Independence was a list of those unjust things and who gave them the authority to split.
Learning the history of America should give a special meaning for its national anthem, but problems are also needed to be learned and solved.
Our Declaration of Independence states that any human has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But what if someone doesn't want to live anymore? That's where medically assisted suicide comes into play. I support assisted suicide, but this does not mean I support people trying to kill themselves to end their life when they have depression, anxiety, or just not living a life they wanted to live. However, I support it when a terminally ill patient doesn't have much time to live left and is in great pain. When people are only surviving due to life support and drugs I believe it is their right to choose if they don't want to go on any longer. For the common good, I believe people who don't have much chance in living can end their suffering.
