In her article “The Argument Culture,” professor of linguistics and author Deborah Tannen believes that we have collapsed into a society where arguing, criticizing, and debating is the solution to every problem. Tannen introduces this idea of society as the “argument culture”. The argument culture is a way of life that settles on the belief that the best way to get things done is to oppose everything. The way we freely and blatantly express problems is one of our society’s greatest strengths. People tend to express their beliefs and automatically expect someone to reply with their own view, therefore turning into an argument as to why each side is right and the other is wrong. We tend to look at both sides of an argument to side with the one
we see fit. When we do this, we are missing the whole point of the argument. An argument is a discussion that involves different points of views. In these discussions we are trying to come to a compromise somewhere between the two views, which is where Tannen believes most Americans’ views are. But instead of trying to understanding the two views in the argument, we try to force what we think is right into the other persons mind and criticize their views. Tannen describes this as a game of winning and losing. The winner is the one who successfully changes the opponents view, and the loser is the one who ends up changing their own view to their opponents. Technology is a big player in this game. We can access the internet almost everywhere, this means that we can speak our mind almost everywhere online. Social media is all about stating our views and to criticize anyone who thinks differently than us. The argument culture can shape our character, morals, and ethics. Tannan believes that we need to change this culture to a “dialogue culture.” Making this change is vital for our private and personal lives not just for just the present, but for the future to come as well.

According to Tannen, she refers to the hostility within communication as “The Argument Culture.” It has become a war on words that continues to thrive off of conflict, animosity and tension. Tannen addresses the idea of debate, disputes, attack and criticism as a comprehensive list of words to describe her thesis. Tannen uses rhetorical devices by formulating the main points of her argument. She did this by convincing her readers and incorporating facts and reasons. Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
The progression of US society has become increasingly more individualistic every generation. Twenge’s analysis of Generation Me accurately depicts the way people today are more irritable and inclined to argue when their points are challenged. Similarly, the argument culture discussed by Tannen has taken over the American education system in part due to this rise in narcissism. Dr. Deborah Tannen’s thesis, “we have plunged headfirst into what I call the ‘argument culture,” (Tannen, 1998) in her book The Argument Culture, is intended to pique one’s curiosity. Upon reading Dr. Tannen’s work I soon found myself nodding my head in agreement. How can one not agree that our society is not the pillar of chivalry it once was? After fulfilling the requirements for our last session, I find myself questioning Dr. Tannen’s work a little more. I agree that our society has been inundated with a lack of courtesy from all areas.
