Ben, a college student who works as a guide during the summer months, has been hired by Madec, a wealthy, businessman, to lead him to bighorn sheep which live in the desert mountains. A young college student who is trying to earn money for tuition, Ben works during his free time as a hunting guide. He lives with his uncle because his parents are dead and he does not have any siblings or a girlfriend. The people in his hometown know him because the community is small and tight knit. Having lived near the desert all of his life, Ben knows the area very well and has a definite understanding of the challenges faced by people trying to survive in Death Valley. When he goes into the desert, he brings an adequate water supply because he knows the dangers of dehydration. As a hunting guide he can generally find bighorn sheep in a reasonable amount of time. sheriff because it is the right thing to do. He disagrees with Madec, who wants to shoot anything that moves. It is important to Ben to always obey the law. On the other hand, Madec is a wealthy entrepreneur who hires Ben to help him hunt bighorn sheep.
He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children. Many people close to his home know him but small town residents know nothing of him. Madec does not have experience in desert areas like Ben does but that does not seem to stop him. He uses his torturous deeds and foul mindset to try to overcome Ben, “Madec huddled over the gun. There was an intensity in his eyes far beyond that of just hunting a sheep. It was the look of murder” (10). Being honest is a last resort for Madec. Honesty to Madec is admitting his failures which he is not fond of. He bribes and tries to persuade Ben not to tell the truth of what has
happened. Deathwatch is set in Death Valley, California, where two men seem to have a common goal as they first start out hunting for bighorn sheep. After an incident that results in a dead prospector, they discover each other's true intentions. There begins the struggle for Ben to get away from a crazy man with a .358 Magnum. Ben’s knowledge of the land finally prevails and he is able to defeat his deathwatch, Madec.
In the document “Doomed to Perish”: George Catlin’s Depictions of the Mandan by Katheryn S. Hight, she analyzes the work of George Catlin while he traveled to the Mandan colony west of the Missouri River. Hight identifies that Catlin created a false and imaginative depiction of the Mandan Indians based on his social and political ideas which ended up creating an entertainment enterprise rather than reporting history. Catlin’s extravagant depictions of the Indians, which did have an impact on the Indian Policy in America, seemingly motivates Hight to write on this subject.

In Borderlands, the realities of what happens by the border instill the true terror that people face every day. They are unable to escape and trapped in a tragic situation. After reading my three classmates’ papers, I was able to learn a lot more about this piece than I originally encountered just on my own. I was able to read this piece in a completely new light and expand on ideas that I did not even think of.
The book Outlaw Platoon written by Sean Parnell is a soldiers’ tale of his platoon in one of the most dangerous places on earth. This book is a non-fiction riveting work that tells the story of a platoon that spent sixteen months on an operating base in the Bermel Valley, the border of Pakistan. This mission the men were sent on was part of a mission called Operation Enduring Freedom. This book is extremely relevant to the war that we are still fighting in Afghanistan and the humanitarian work that continues. We still have men in this area fighting and losing their lives everyday. It is the focus of ongoing political debates and the purpose of our involvement there is an ongoing question in the minds of many Americans. In writing this book, Parnell makes it clear in his author’s notes that he indeed was not trying to pursue one political agenda over another. His goal as not to speak of all members of the platoon and expose their identities and the types of soldiers they were but instead to showcase some of the men’s bravery and abilities during the war. Parnell believed that he owed it to the men to write something that would show the world what these men go through during combat in an honest and raw account. Another purpose of Parnell’s in writing this book is an attempt at making sure these men are given a place in American war history.
Tim O'Brien is confused about the Vietnam War. He is getting drafted into it, but is also protesting it. He gets to boot camp and finds it very difficult to know that he is going off to a country far away from home and fighting a war that he didn't believe was morally right. Before O'Brien gets to Vietnam he visits a military Chaplin about his problem with the war. "O'Brien I am really surprised to hear this. You're a good kid but you are betraying you country when you say these things"(60). This says a lot about O'Brien's views on the Vietnam War. In the reading of the book, If I Die in a Combat Zone, Tim O'Brien explains his struggles in boot camp and when he is a foot soldier in Vietnam.
The drama, Mission of Mercy, by Esther Lipnick is a very inspiring read. It tells about a girl who doesn’t want to be like her proper, fancy family at all. Instead she wants to become a nurse. She leaves her home and becomes a nurse. It inspires me because both of my parents, and other family members of mine, are teachers, although I’m not going to be one. Mission of Mercy is a drama that could inspire many people to go for what they want, even if other people don’t always approve of it. Florence changes throughout all of the the scenes 1, 2, and 3.
War has been a constant part of human history. It has greatly affected the lives of people around the world. These effects, however, are extremely detrimental. Soldiers must shoulder extreme stress on the battlefield. Those that cannot mentally overcome these challenges may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sadly, some resort to suicide to escape their insecurities. Soldiers, however, are not the only ones affected by wars; family members also experience mental hardships when their loved ones are sent to war. Timothy Findley accurately portrays the detrimental effects wars have on individuals in his masterpiece The Wars.
What This Cruel War Was Over evaluates the American Civil War through the eyes of both northern and southern soldiers. By examining the conflict through this lens, Chandra Manning delivers a narrative with intricacies that explore an in-depth perspective to a greater degree than other authors have in the past. Revealing how men thought about slavery and the Civil War frames her book, and the examples she utilizes to fulfill her goal in arguing her thesis conveys an original body of work. Additionally, several of the concepts established in the author’s book are also discussed through various methods in other books.
Hunting big game animals for sport was a popular pastime with the wealthy classes following World War I. The morality of killing for sport was not questioned in reality, but in this short story the author does question it by taking it a step further and having the protagonist, Sangor Rainsford, hunted by the antagonist, General Zaroff. In a short story full of irony, one of the greatest ironies of Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is that General Zaroff repeatedly tells Rainsford that he maintains a sense of civilization on his island.
Bravery can be showed by having strength, being willing to sacrifice, and standing up for yourself and others. Life will not be very fun if you do not try to make it fun. One has to be brave to make life fun. If one is not strong it would make it hard to be brave. If Holling was not strong then he would not have been able to play Ariel in the Shakespeare play. All of his friends showed up when he was was wearing yellow tights and feathers on his butt. He stayed strong and finished the play. “Still ringing in the hands of Danny Humfer, Meryl Lee and Mai Ti who were standing in the very front row.” (Schmidt 86) That moment was when Holling first saw all of his classmates watching him in the play. At first he only saw Danny’s parents, but then

The characters in the novel The Merciless by Danielle Vega are hiding many secrets, which at first makes them appear very realistic. The plot revolves around a young girl named Sofia, who has recently moved to the small town of Friend, Mississippi, as a result of her mother being assigned to a new army base. Sofia is a very realistic character, who's conveyed feelings and emotions about starting a new school and making new friends are very relatable. She quickly befriends three girls, who Sofia is surprised about, as “Girls [she’s] known who look like Riley don’t make friends with the new kid”(Vega 9). Riley, Grace and Alexis are the preppy, popular girls at school who invite Sofia into their friend group from the beginning. The girls
