We often claim to have the best justice system in the world. But many countries believe that we are hypocrites because we criticize other countries human rights violations, yet still execute people for crime. According to Amnesty International, "Most executions took place in China, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the USA -- in that order." ( Amnesty International) The death penalty should be declared unconstitutional because it is unfair and unjust, puts innocent people at risk, is expensive, and does not serve any important societal goal. There are many issues with the death penalty, but probably the most compelling is the fact that innocent people can be executed. The news is unfortunately full of stories where innocent people were arrested for a horrible crime they did not commit, but spent many years in prison or were sentenced to the death penalty. After a period of time, sometimes tragically after the suspect has been killed, evidence may be reviewed or reanalyzed using DNA or other more advanced technology, and it is determined that they really did not commit the crime. These supporters believe the death penalty gives a sense of justice and closure for families and victims. After a tragedy occurs, one may feel that the death penalty is compensation for what the victim and their family has suffered. They may also believe that a long prison sentence is disproportionate to the heinousness of the crime that took place, and that the death penalty punishment fits the crime they committed. According to ProCon.org, "Some crimes are so heinous and inherently wrong that they demand strict penalties - up to and including life sentences or even death." (Top 10 Pros and Cons - Death Penalty - ProCon.org) Supporters of the death penalty also believe that it acts as a deterrent, and will cause a decrease in crimes that would cause someone to be sentenced to the death
