Death anxiety is the apprehension generated by death awareness (Lehto & Stein, 2009). It is a multi-faced and encompasses concerns related to the denial of death, the dear of death for oneself and for others, avoidance of death, and the reluctance to interact with person who are dying (Quinn-Lee, Olson-McBride & Unterberger, 2014). According to Lehto and Stein (2009), death anxiety is an evolving concept that involves six attributes which are emotion, cognitive, experiential, development, sociocultural shaping, and source of motivation. Although death anxiety is a normal human experience, it can engender paralyzing fear (Iverach et al., 2014). It is also considered as a basic fear underlying the development and maintenance of numerous psychological conditions (Iverach, Menzies & Menzies, 2014).
Death anxiety occurs across all ages. Children first acknowledge death in preschool period (Slaughter & Griffiths, 2007). It is also mentioned by Slaughter and Griffiths (2007) that young children endorse more fear in comparison to older children. death anxiety is negatively correlated with death understanding for children (Slaughter & Griffiths, 2007). It is hypothesized that participants’ death anxiety will reduce after receiving 16 weeks of individual CBT under an existential framework. 300 women from the age of 30 to the age of 60 who self report to have high death anxiety will be recruited from the community to participate in this study. Participants will be informed to take the Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) (Templer, 2006) prior to the 16-week individual therapy treatment. Participants will take the DAS again after the treatment.
