Case Study about Death and Dying Among all the other unpredictable thing in life, the topic of death and dying is the most difficult subject for people to honestly and openly discuss. Several theorists believe that people in general fear death and that fear directly affects everything people do (Kastenbaum, 2000). Nurses meet so many people with unfamiliar cultures and beliefs about death and dying. Therefore, awareness and sensitivity of ones’ culture as well as good ethical decision making are inevitable in rending respectful and seamless care to patients and family going through such tragedy. Prime reality is how people see God, whom reveals Himself to Human kind as a Triune God. The relationship between human and God is personal (Aline, 2015). Also, the world is viewed differently depending who is looking. This student believes that God is always there in the time of needs, chaos and suffering, this attitude helps this student to see the world positively as a human being. The way this student see human being also has a positive impact in her life. She believes that God created human in His image, this being has an intellectual capacity to understand and gain knowledge about self (Creed, 2015). This student believes that, when someone dies, if that people accepted Jesus as their personal Savior, there will be a place reserved for them, but for the ones who rejected Christ, they are lost forever. The foundation of a Christian worldview is the belief in a personal God, creator and ruler of the universe. The Christian worldview views the world through God’s word, providing the framework for humanity to live by giving meaning and purpose to life. It defines who Jesus is, human nature, and how salvation is achieved. In essence it is the basis of which Christians behave, interact, interpret life and comprehend reality. A Christian worldview imparts confidence, answers to life’s problems, and hope for the future. In this paper I will discuss the essentials of a Christian worldview and an analysis of the influences, benefits, and difficulties sustaining the Christian faith.
Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the United States, and the majority of them are Mexican in origin (Kemp, 2001). The Roman Catholic Church plays a vital role in the culture and daily life of many Mexican Americans. Consequently, healthcare personnel must become culturally competent in dealing with the different beliefs possessed by these individuals. Nurses must have the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver care that is congruent with the patient’s cultural beliefs and practices (Kearney-Nunnery, 2010). The ways that a nurse cares for a Mexican American patient during the process of dying or at the critical time of death is especially important. The purpose of this paper is to examine Mexican Americans’ beliefs concerning terminal illness and death, explain the role of the nurse desired by Mexican Americans, and discuss how the knowledge gained will be incorporated into future nursing practice.
The nursing profession is formed upon the Hippocratic practice of "do no harm" and an ethic of moral opposition to ending another human’s life. The Code of Ethics for nurses prohibits intentionally terminating any human life. Nurses are compelled to provide ease of suffering, comfort and ideally a death that is coherent with the values and wishes of the dying patient, however; it is essential that nurses uphold the ethical obligations of the profession and not partake in assisted suicide. Nurses are both blessed and cursed to be with patients from the very first moments of life until their final breath. With those last breaths, each patient leaves someone behind. How do nurses handle the loss and grief that comes along with patients dying? How do they help the families and loved ones of deceased patients? Each person, no matter their background, must grieve the death of a loved one, but there is no right way to grieve and no two people will have the same reaction to death. It is the duty of nurses to respect the wishes and grieving process of each and every culture; of each and every individual (Verosky, 2006). This paper will address J. William Worden’s four tasks of mourning as well as the nursing implications involved – both when taking care of patients’ families and when coping with the loss of patients themselves.
The nurse becomes the confidant, the guide through the darkness, a source of comfort for those experiencing the trauma of losing a child. Education often supplements ones credibility with the dying patient and their family which can ease overall anxiety and further promote ones role as a patient advocate and provider of
The concept of human mortality and how it is dealt with is dependent upon one’s society or culture. For it is the society that has great impact on the individual’s beliefs.
