Both poems are set in the past, and both fathers are manual labourers, which the poets admired as a child. Both poems indicate intense change in their fathers lives, that affected the poet in a drastic way. Role reversal between father and son is evident, and a change of emotion is present. These are some of the re-occurring themes in both poems. Both poems in effect deal with the loss of a loved one; whether it be physically or mentally.
He focuses on that in both poems. Strength is an important aspect in anyone’s life, because without strength one cannot succeed in life. Since the dawn of time African-Americans have been blazing through pain to survive. Strength is extremely noticeable in Mother to Son. The whole poem is based on her strength and courage to endure all her trials and tribulations with grace.
Kim Addonizio’s “First Poem for You” portrays a speaker who contemplates the state of their romantic relationship though reflections of their partner’s tattoos. Addressing their partner, the speaker ambivalence towards the merits of the relationship, the speaker unhappily remains with their partner. Through the usage of contrasting visual and kinesthetic imagery, the speaker revels the reasons of their inability to embrace the relationship and showcases the extent of their paralysis. Exploring this theme, the poem discusses how inner conflicts can be powerful paralyzers.
In the world of teenagers everything seems to come and pass by so quickly. For instance the beginning of senior year. In Spite of being happy and excited were also generally nervous and anxious to see what our future holds. As senior year comes to an end, It then becomes as temporary as the summer sun but also the boundary of our life before we enter adulthood. Even then our future is still undefined.
The most preeminent quality of Sonia Sanchez “Ballad” remains the tone of the poem, which paints a didactic image. Sanchez is trying to tell this young people that we know nix about love as well as she is told old for it. In an unclear setting, the poem depicts a nameless young women and Sanchez engaged in a conversation about love. This poem dramatizes the classic conflict between old and young. Every old person believes they know more then any young person, all based on the fact that they have been here longer then all of us. The narrative voice establishes a tone of a intellectual understanding of love unraveling to the young women, what she comprehends to love is in fact not.
Tupac Shakur among very few artists has lyrically display admiration for his mother. Artists such as Boyz II Men, Gyptian, and Richie Spice have also affectionately dedicated lyrical tribute to their mothers. The poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete” is about a rose that grew in concrete a metaphor that shows that you have to get past your problems to succeed. “Love Poem With Toast” by Miller Williams introduces the effect our desires have in our daily lives in order to “move, as we call it, forward” (11). Miller Williams also conveys this message accompanied with a darker meaning; though these desires make up a large part of our lives, in the end none of it will matter because we leave the world the same way we enter it, with nothing. Despite this message being carried out, it is still a love poem at the surface, but it is not about a person confessing their love, rather pretending to love, and continuing to live with this self-conflict about choosing to be in a frigid relationship over not being in one at all. It is interesting how Miller rhythmically categorizes his message throughout the poem;
The mother describes all the different obstacles that can stand in the way along the path of life, but tells her son to continue to climb. “Mother to Son” has been referenced in speeches by Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama as pieces of human inspiration to continue moving forward even during the tough times (Miller, 425). Langston’s poem represents the relationship between a mother and her child to try to be a support system during difficult times to keep them fighting for more in their life. King and Obama used this same poem to speak to human nature and encourage the movement past difficult events in society (Miller, 425). Langston’s poem shows how it was relevant when it was written, but it is still relevant today since it pulls at who we are as
Jacqueline Woodson 's "Parents Poem" is a beautiful poem about a person losing both of the parents in a fire. The narrator talk about different memories that he or she has about their mother and father. The narrator goes on to explain that nothing can take his or her parents away fully. The literary criticism i will use to analyze the poem is reader-response. I will referee to the narrator as he and she for the reason Lonnie can be a girls or boys name.
Sylvia Plath’s jarring poem ‘Daddy’, is not only the exploration of her bitter and tumultuous relationship with her father, husband and perhaps the male species in general but is also a strong expression of resentment against the oppression of women by men and the violence and tyranny men can and have been held accountable for. Within the piece, the speaker creates a figurative image of her father by using metaphors to describe her relationship with him: “Not God but a Swastika” , he is a “… brute” , even likening him to leader of the Nazi Party; Adolf Hitler: “A man in black with a Meinkampf look .” Overall, the text is a telling recount of her hatred towards her father and her husband of “Seven years” and the tolling affect it has had on
... overall themes, and the use of flashbacks. Both of the boys in these two poems reminisce on a past experience that they remember with their fathers. With both poems possessing strong sentimental tones, readers are shown how much of an impact a father can have on a child’s life. Clearly the two main characters experience very different past relationships with their fathers, but in the end they both come to realize the importance of having a father figure in their lives and how their experiences have impacted their futures.
Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, which is shown in both the Thanksgiving poem and Another Case of Ingratitude. The Thanksgiving poem expresses pure gratitude, whereas in Another Case of Ingratitude the homeless man shows gratitude in a way that is not common. In Another Case of Ingratitude, the homeless man displays basic gratitude for his food with a thankful expression on his face. He shows minimal gratitude with only a facial expression. He is clearly limited in his ability to be thankful. On the other hand, in the poem, the author states all the things in life that everyone should be grateful for, like friends, love, and good health. The author conveys abundant joy through his words. He is so thankful for all the things he is
