The twenty-second chapter of A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking is all about informative speaking. The authors break down informative speaking into five categories; those being, gaining and sustaining audience involvement, finding ways to increase understanding, what informative speeches are about, deciding how to communicate the information, and reducing the confusion.
Many of the students that enroll in post-secondary education will be required to face one of the greatest fears known to man – having to stand before an audience and deliver a prepared speech. This dreaded action is courtesy of the requirement of a public speaking course in numerous degree paths. The majority of students will enroll in a public speaking course just to “check the box”, and have no intention of ever really utilizing the skills that they will be taught. There exists a minority of students who recognize the importance of effective public speaking, and desire to move past the basics and become effective orators. How can these students be aided? A full semester advanced public speaking course could be designed to mature both the
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).

Public speaking is one of the most under rated skills learned in school, yet is one of the most valuable. The way you communicate shows a lot about you, and can influence other’s opinions of you. I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.
My audience recognized some of the authoritative sources what made easier for me to keep moving forward with the speech. With regards to the delivery of my ideas, I believe I used words and visual aids that helped the public to better understand, to follow, and remember. In fact, some people form the audience kept talking and asking questions. One of my strategies was to try to narrate a story instead of giving facts and dates only.

As an undergraduate student, I would consider myself as an average communicator among my peers. Due to lack of experience, I struggle to execute flawless speeches. In past experiences I have worked to correct errors such as talking too fast, saying “um” and dealing with high amounts of anxiety in front of crowds. Each specific problem area, occurs in behalf of many different factors. Speech errors, such as saying “um”, and “like” often surface when a teacher or a large group of peers are listening to me talk. Anxiety is also an issue I personally deal
