“Dead Poet’s Society” is a film set in the late fifties at a prestigious school for boys called the Welton Academy. The story focuses on an unorthodox English teacher and his impact upon his students, especially a group of seven boys. The primary focus of this film, in my opinion, is the theme of coming of age. The film itself highlights many important and relevent issues that teenagers face in the process of trying to find out who they are as a person. The students are constantly pressured to conform by adults throughout most of the film. Although these adults are only trying to help the boys, it is important that they figure themselves out and develop their own way of thinking. When the boys realize this, they grow up themselves. The character of Todd is a fantastic example of this. Throughout most of the film, this shy boy is ultimately unwilling and reluctant to go against what he is told. When Neil commits suicide, he begins to see the world in a very different way and understands that sometimes questioning the decisions and regulations accepted by society is necessary. …show more content…
Along with the main focus of coming of age, the film also does an excellent job of showing a darker side to the boys.
The secondary focus is a struggle, Neil’s struggle in particular, which is both against his parents and within himself. “Dead Poet’s Society” presents the heavy topic of suicide. Through Neil’s character, we as an audience are exposed to the morbid thoughts and emotions that many young adults unfortunately face. Neil, like many of the other boys, is introduced as being reluctant and unwilling to go against the authority roles in his life, primarily his father and his expectations. As the film progresses, he begins to search for himself and ultimately goes against his father’s wishes as he pursues his love of theatre. When he learns of his father’s disapproval, it leads him to
suicide. The dramatic question in the film comes straight from Mr. Keating. When he takes the boys to look at pictures of deceased alumni from the school, he mentions how he wants to ensure that their lives are extraordinary, to persuade them to do something bold or different, and do follow their dreams. He tells them to “carpe diem” or seize the day. He proposes the question, “Are you seizing the day?” It seems silly at first, but the boys do follow his advice. Neil finds a passion for the arts, Knox finds a girl that he loves, and Todd learns to speak for himself. When Neil commits suicide, the school looks for someone to blame. Mr. Keating, including his unconventional advice to seize the day, is singled out and he is fired. The boys are heartbroken about this. The once-shy Todd finally dares to speak out and finds the courage to stand atop his desk and say goodbye regardless of the consequences. The film is truly about seizing the day and to embrace life before we leave this world and to make the most of the opportunities that are handed to you.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Dead Poet Society explore the struggle for independence through characters who are subject to an environment in which they are rewarded for their conformity. Dead Poet Society outlines the complications of young students at Welton Academy after a respected English teacher named Mr. Keating inspires them to seize the day. However, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest explore the events that transpire in a mental institute after an exceedingly ‘difficult’ patient arrives and the impact this has on Chief Bromden. It appears appropriate to discuss the film using Peck's ideas on love and discipline since "The Dead Poets Society" involves numerous instances where individual interests, driven by love, come into conflict with discipline invoked by the proponents of social conservation and conformity. It is the situation where the older generation intends to exercise control over the younger one through what it sees as discipline, while at the same time failing to see that the real reason behind the acting out done by the younger generation is not the need to rebel but rather the desire to find their own way in life, to explore the future according to their own interests, while at the same time seeking approval from the older generation towards which the younger one often feels nothing but love.
The movie, Dead Poets Society truly captures the essence of the conformities that children are facing. The difference is letting the hourglass run out of time, or making the best of time, facing tough challenges along the way. Todd Anderson makes the best out of his time thanks to the teaching of Mr. Keating, his beloved English teacher. From a misunderstood adolescent to a courageous man, Todd shows his true colors and releases the inferior thoughts stirring up in his developing, young body. In the end, romanticism crushes idealism with power and envy, showing the eye-opening ways that a teacher can contribute to such a tightly wound academy such as Welton.
In J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caufield believes that innocence is corrupted by society. He exposes his self-inflicted emotional struggles as he is reminiscing the past. For Holden, teenage adolescence is a complicated time for him, his teenage mentality in allows him to transition from the teenage era to the reality of an adult in the real world. As he is struggling to find his own meaning of life, he cares less about others and worries about how he can be a hero not only to himself but also to the innocent youth. As Holden is grasping the idea of growing up, he sets his priorities of where he belongs and how to establish it. As he talks about how ‘phony’ the outside world is, he has specific recollections that signify importance to his life and he uses these time and time again because these memories are ones that he wont ever let go of. The death of his younger brother Allie has had a major impact on him emotionally and mentally. The freedom of the ducks in Central Park symbolize his ‘get away’ from reality into his own world. His ideology of letting kids grow up and breaking the chain loose to discover for themselves portrays the carrousel and the gold ring. These are three major moments that will be explored to understand the life of Holden Caufield and his significant personal encounters as he transitions from adolescence into manhood.
For all teens, the transition into adulthood is generally seen as a challenging and scary process. Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. Dead Poets Society, a movie set in Welton Academy, a rigorous and elite all-boys private school, brings to life the philosophy of transcendentalism through its characters. The philosophy, which believes a person needs to find their individual, unique self and not allow the conformist ways of society to hamper the ability to have self-reliance, is introduced by Mr. Keating, the new English teacher who, through his distinctive teaching methods, exemplifies the transcendentalist idea and breathes life into it. His personification of this philosophy is not only readily welcomed by the boys, but acted upon, consequently impacting his students in a profound manner.

Weir highlights the omnipresent nature of challenge, by centralising these sequences around challenge, before the full plot and settings have been fleshed out. With his father (Mr Perry) pushing for him to get into “medical school”, Neil appears to be well conditioned with the constant pressures of challenge, expressing how he “won’t disappoint” the authorities. When you consider ageism, you think about people being labeled as other 's sees fit. It 's just another term to judge or deny people of their humanity. When you think about people in their late adulthood what comes to mind? Some may think about gray hair, saggy skin, dentures, and a wheelchair. So my question is why? According to (Palmore, 2005, p. 90) “Ageism is a social disease, much like racism and sexism” in that it considers people as part of a category and not as individuals, creating “needless fear, waste, illness, and misery.” The more people grow and develop, they will learn that aging must go on.
The students re-institute a secret society that Keating used to run called the Dead Poets Society. The society meet in an old cave and recite famous poetry and works of their own. Problems soon start to arise when the actions of the students become unfavorable with the conformist attitudes of both the school and the boys parents. We are all victims of aging. We can witness our inevitable fates in the elderly with their wrinkled, loose skin and gray hair. You can try and mask the effects of aging, but you can never escape from it. From the moment we are born the natural process of aging begins. Its effects can be seen on our face and body as we grow from a child to an adult. Soon after our bodies have matured into young adults, the degenerative properties of aging begin to negatively impact the body. Aging goes deep beneath the superficial changes like of a balding head, wrinkled skin, or a grey head of hair. These inconspicuous changes occur inside the body affecting cells and organs such as the brain, heart, or lungs. In addition to the deterioration of health of the brain and heart; bones can become weaker and shorter and our vision and hearing impaired or even lost. There are genetic factors and environmental conditions that may contribute to the cause and effects of aging. With age, there is also an increase susceptibility to diseases, cellular damage, genetic mutations, and cancers. Although there have been many advances in medicine and technologies which have allowed us to live longer lives, aging is still an unavoidable natural process.
