The time is 1959, the hundredth anniversary of the founding of Welton Academy. Welton is a sort of Ivy League training school. The boys of Welton Academy are dutiful sons, their lives arranged by Mom and Dad like connecting dots. They need only move assuredly from point A, Welton, to point B, Harvard or Oxford, to point C, a prestigious law firm/corporation/band. However, that does not stop their new English teacher from encouraging them to break the pattern. With a contagious passion for verse and a lust for life, Keating exhorts his students to think for themselves. Then avocation that they strip themselves of prejudices, habits and influences.
Dead Poets Society opens with prep-school boys listening to Mr. Nolan (the evil headmaster) extol the four pillars, all that invokes frightful images of coming of age piffle like class. The school's reputation is based on Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence, and these tenets are drummed into the boy's everyday. There is no a lot of room left in the students' minds for thought of their own.
The teachers all seem to have come out of the same mold as the school's crusty old buildings. In addition, most of them seem as though there ought to be ivy growing on them as well.
That is part of the reason that John Keating stands out. Of course, anyone who likes to stand on his desk to get a fresh perspective is going to be noticed. However, Keating is different in other excessively. The young English teacher tries to awaken a sense of individuality in his students. He urges them to "seize the day," to live each moment to its fullest.

Dead Poets Society is anomalous and prestige book. It is on the side of youth, rebellion, poetry, and passion. In the final analysis, the pluses outweigh the minuses, particularly in the poetry; is shown in a beautiful light. The book is truly in the form of Art. I cannot imagine a better book on how an inspired teacher's mind works. You know at once, why his students would be swept along by his words, he is thinking on his feet, getting high on his thoughts. In addition, that is what Keating is doing: rhythms reveal the free workings of his mind. If only "Dead Poets Society" got into the subject of what Keating gives to teaching and what it gives back to him!
Throughout the text Keating connects with people on a personal level through his word choice and tone. This connection with his audience allows him to further develop belonging, and evoke a greater emotional response in his audience. This word choice and tone can be seen in the lines, “We took the traditional lands and smashed the traditional way of life. We brought the diseases. The alcohol. We committed the murders. We practiced discrimination and exclusion. It was our ignorance and our prejudice.”
Keating, and now by The Headmaster, Mr. Nolan. Nolan brings back reference to the introductory essay by “Dr. J. Evans Pritchard Ph. D”. When this passage is being read, a symbol of the banking concept returning to the classroom, the students who were members of the dead poets society stand up in rebellion of Mr. Nolan, and his oppression. This scene shows both education methods present throughout the film and described by Friere. Nolan makes an attempt to force the banking concept back on the students, and ignore the principals of the problem posing critically thinking students they have become “Education as the exercise of domination stimulates the credulity of students, with the ideological intent (often not perceived by the educators) of indoctrinating them to adapt to the world of oppression” (Friere
First and most importantly Mike Rose writes the book in the first person. This provides an invaluable view to the actual thoughts and perceptions of a student who considered himself to be underprepared. Mike Rose begins his accounts in grammar school when he felt lost in the material. The teacher did not hold his attention and therefore he began to “daydream to avoid inadequacy” (Rose 19).
Throughout Dead Poets Society, there is a crucial theme of transcendentalism suspended over the plot; perhaps this theme is the reason why the story is so interesting to its viewers. Without a doubt, these interesting aspects are created by a variety of symbols, carefully molded into each scene of the story. Being that there exists several symbolic scenes, one must take a step back and look at this story as a whole. This perspective will make the main symbol stand out, as it lasts for the duration of the movie. The most powerful symbol is the character of John Keating, portraying God in the eyes of transcendentalism.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Dead Poet Society explore the struggle for independence through characters who are subject to an environment in which they are rewarded for their conformity. Dead Poet Society outlines the complications of young students at Welton Academy after a respected English teacher named Mr. Keating inspires them to seize the day. However, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest explore the events that transpire in a mental institute after an exceedingly ‘difficult’ patient arrives and the impact this has on Chief Bromden. Both texts critically explore the struggle for independence.
It appears appropriate to discuss the film using Peck's ideas on love and discipline since "The Dead Poets Society" involves numerous instances where individual interests, driven by love, come into conflict with discipline invoked by the proponents of social conservation and conformity. It is the situation where the older generation intends to exercise control over the younger one through what it sees as discipline, while at the same time failing to see that the real reason behind the acting out done by the younger generation is not the need to rebel but rather the desire to find their own way in life, to explore the future according to their own interests, while at the same time seeking approval from the older generation towards which the younger one often feels nothing but love.
The movie, Dead Poets Society truly captures the essence of the conformities that children are facing. The difference is letting the hourglass run out of time, or making the best of time, facing tough challenges along the way. Todd Anderson makes the best out of his time thanks to the teaching of Mr. Keating, his beloved English teacher. From a misunderstood adolescent to a courageous man, Todd shows his true colors and releases the inferior thoughts stirring up in his developing, young body. In the end, romanticism crushes idealism with power and envy, showing the eye-opening ways that a teacher can contribute to such a tightly wound academy such as Welton.
Mr. Keating first shows an example of transcendentalism ideas during class, when he encourages his students to tear out the pages of the introduction to their literature book. Mr. Keating believes the boys need to learn to analyze the poetry for themselves, and not listen to someone else's interpretation. He tells his students, “Now in my class you will learn to think for yourselves again.” ( Dead Poets Society: Final Script). Mr. Keating wants his students to look beyond what a book says, and interpret things the poetry the way they see fit. Mr. Keating represents transcendentalist ideas again in the courtyard scene. He is emphasizing the dangers of conformity, and how the boys need to hear a “different drummer”. As the boys march around, they start to comport to the same beat. He uses this to emphasize the point that “you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular” (Dead Poets Society: Final Script). Director Peter Weir, director of The Truman Show, presents the importance of individuality and speaking up in his movie Dead Poets Society, a fictional but realistic story that tells the story of a group of friends at the Wellington Academy prep school and their interactions with their new English teacher, John Keating (Robin Williams). Keating teaches the boys life lessons through some interesting teaching methods that end up changing his students’ approach to life’s challenging situations. Throughout watching Dead Poets Society, I found myself liking the movie more and more as it progressed.
The students that Keating taught were the ones who changed. Then the symphony was changed. They became more independent in their thinking and discovered what they wanted out of life. The change in these students is what caused the main conflict in the movie. The conflict arose in Dead Poets Society as Keating's philosophies about life were challenged.

Mr. Keating had went to the same school he is teaching in now. Knox was flat. He had problems with his dad. Todd was flat. He was on Mr. Keating’s side when the school tried to fire him. Cameron was dynamic. He went with the crowd. If a group of kids did one thing then he would follow right behind.
