Dead Man Walking
When watching Dead Man Walking I think you heard more views on way not to subject people to the death penalty. Some of the main reasons are that our justice system is not perfect we still sentence innocent people to death and once that happen it can never be undone. Plus because of the long process that occurs with this it cost a large amount of money to execute them then it would be to sentence them to life in prison. If you talk to some of the victims family member it doesn’t always give them satisfaction of the offender dying because they feel it a long processes and it creates more hardships then it worth and some family member do not make it to the day their executed. In addition to this, most religions feel that

committing someone to death is immoral. Now when watching that short movie related to religion and capital punishment they felt that a human life is a gift from God and it is not ours to take away. They believed that there a way to reprimand others then to take their lives. We as a society need to find a better way than to become killers our self because that’s what we do when we take a life. There other things we could do in this we see not all family member of the victims rely on death because they know it does not bring their love ones back and it generates pain somewhere for another family. One way to think of this is two wrongs don’t make a right. I think if we all thought about this we might all change our minds when it comes such a permanent state when there no return. In addition to this, Sister Helen when starting out went to the projects in New Orleans this area had a high crime rate and most of the people that lived there were poor.
For about three years she live there to help people, to listen to their needs and to support them anyway she could. During her stay there she was going on a walk and there was a prison coalition offices close by and person that works there was looking for volunteer to write a member on death row and this is what started her passage in her life. This is what drove her to fight against the death penalty its where she seen and heard the hardships of life behind bars and how everything is done in the middle of the night because to everyone else their lives do not matter. She thought that all people deserved to be treated like humans. Because to Jesus every person is worth more than their worst act. You should not return hate with hate and if people really knew what went on behind the close door maybe they would think …show more content…
twice. In addition to this, when you look at how our religion cultures feel on the subjects most of them feel that it uncivilized, insensitive, brutal and an attack on human life. According to our book DeathQuest most group oppose capital punishment. But when we look at the Gallup poll that was done in 2006 most of our Christian 67% were for the death penalty and 56% that had no religions that they supported where also for it. Now when thinking about this there has been many changes on the value of life in the old testament there a lot of versus that where for the death and here are some Thou shalt not kill, he who kills a man shall be put to death but, back then there was many offences that you could be put to death. If you look at the New Testament you would find that people have change how they view what Jesus said one was to love their enemies and to forgive those who trespass against us. When this came about most of our religious leaders believe in following this form of forgiveness, non-violence and to try find a way to redirect a person from taking a person life and everyone life has a goal. When looking at Dead man walking this movie entail the life of Matthew Poncelet he was found guilty of killing two teenagers. In this movie I feel that it was against the death penalty it related a lot of information on how inhuman it is to take a life for a life. There was many biblical term and other famous versus used in this movie. One is the police officer felt that he should die for what he has done. Because he believes in an eye for an eye. The priest at the penitentiary opinion was that most people on death row should die for their crimes because they took a life. When Sister Helen Prejean’s was speaking to him he was very concern that she had no idea what she was getting herself into and people in these circumstances will say or do anything to get there way or manipulate anyone from the outside. She let him know that he wrote her a few letters and had asked her to come and see him. She also felt that she wanted to help him take accountability for his action. I feel she was a very strong person when it comes to her religious beliefs. She felt that everyone no matter what evil crime they have committed everyone has a right to die with dignity. When talking to Matthew she’d let him know that you need to stop playing the blame game. Because you made the choices it time to set things right because you are a son of God and he stated no one ever said that to me. People have always had other choice words for me and that wasn’t one of them. Sister Helen, was very loyal to her cause I believe some people made commits about her only caring for the perpetrator and yes it looked that way. But to me her goal was to be fair and not take sides but for everyone to be able to repent for their sins before they go meet God. When it came to her views I feel her spiritual intake made thing clearer to her. She was trying to relate that message to Matthew so he could better understand what crime he had committed in the eyes of God and show him important it is to ask for forgiveness and to let the families you have harm know that you are truly sorry for the crime. When thinking about who I felt empathy for during this I would have to say everyone involved.
Because they have all loss some part of their life. It’s not easy to lose a love one no matter how the situation happen and when it does happen we all go through many steps. Those consist of one denial where we cannot believe this has happen and sometime we don’t want to talk to anyone, two angry where we attack all the people close to us and especial the one who hurt our love one we want them to pay with there life, three we blame our self as in was there something we could have done, four depression how are we going to live without them and get through life everyday knowing there no longer with us. Then finally accept that we cannot change things. Now when I look at this list I see that all involved are effect and we all have different ways of working through this and that ok because we need to be able to live with ourselves and everyone has to do what right in their eyes. With this said the family that loss their love one to such a terrible crime where they can no longer talk, watch them grow old or hold their love one. Matthew family because they can no longer see him on a regular base only on prison time. Plus I feel that in the end Matthew finely realized his loss of not being there for us brother and he seen what it was like for the others he hurt. In the end he may have finely found what the true meaning of love means and what forgiveness is all
about.
"Running for His Life" In the story "Running for His Life", Michael Hall explains the genocide that Gilbert Tuhabonye experienced when he was in high school in East Africa and how he managed to escape and begin a new life in Austin, Texas. Friends of theirs burned and beat to death the teachers and Tutsi teenagers. However, if students tried to evacuate the building they would be killed. The building was on fire, burning corpses, and burning to death many students.
The Death Ray by Daniel Clowes is a graphic novel about the story of Andy and how he learned about his superpowers. A superhero is someone who has saved the day by accomplishing something heroic. Even though we look at superheroes as a something fiction, based on this we have everyday heroes around us such as firefighters, police officers, doctors and many more. In Clowes work, we quickly discover that this superhero theme plays out a little differently than what we are used to. The way that Clowes presents Andy to his super power, it is evident this is not an ordinary superhero story. It is arguable that despite the fact that Andy did more harm than good with his powers, his intentions were good. Therefore, he would be considered a superhero.
In this article “ The Old Man isn’t There Anymore” Kellie Schmitt writes about the people she lives with crying in the hallway and when she asks what happened she is told that the old man is gone. This starts the big ordeal of a Chinese funeral that Schmitt learns she knows nothing about. Schmitt confuses the reader in the beginning of the story, as well as pulling in the reader's emotions, and finishes with a twist.
In popular culture a person is admired for having the quality of doing what is right and the ability to overcome any obstacles. In works of fiction these people usually end up fighting violence with violence until they defeat their adversaries. Real life is much more different. In the book Prisoner of Tehran, when Marina is only sixteen years old she is arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. Her life is filled with great sorrows and tragedies that would crush the spirit of most people, but Marian is able to endure these hardships. Marina has a very strong faith in God and she is able to accept what she can not change and she refuses to give up no matter how bad things become for her.
I overheard from the guards saying how she incriminated herself during the trial when she answered every question honestly. She admitted to not releasing the prisoners, and allowing the flames to devour the church and the innocent people in it. She also admitted to writing a report that proved that she and her fellow guards didn’t release the prisoners. I couldn’t have imagined that such diligent woman was a cruel Schutzstaffel guard, and yet, I see these books on her shelf like nails condemning her to death. Through these books, I saw that she was trying to atone for crimes. But for someone who is already in prison, to read and acknowledge such horrific accounts of her own doings is just
Chained beaten with rods, lashed into obedience.” She had also witness sexual abuse, starvation, and prisoners left naked and cold. After witnessing all this cruelty towards the criminals she went around Europe and America establishing her own mental hospitals and had actually agreed to teaching Sunday school in jails. Eventually she successfully stated her case to queen Victoria and the pope.
...tive techniques to get her point across. Her story was very powerful and probably helped in the antislavery movement, therefore fulfilling her goal. In the end she is thought of as a "new kind of female hero" (497). She has gone through many hardships
Opponents of this position argue that the death penalty is a necessary evil. One of the top arguments is that you must punish offenders to discourage others from committing similar offenses (Radelet 44). Many people also feel that the victim’s families deserve closure. The prisoners have to pay for their crime and deserve the punishment that they get. Using the death penalty helps deal with the overpopulation in prisons. There are not enough resources or space to house prisoners for life. This statement can be true to a certain point. However, when talking about sacrificing one person’s life for the greater good of society, no man should have the authority to end someone’s life. One of the biggest issues that opponents argue is how much the victims suffer if the killer is not put to death. A murderer not only affects the person they kill, but also the victim’s friends and family’s life. They have to live with the grief of losing a loved one. If the killer is not put to death they could get the feeling that someone is out to get them. They will not be able to rest until the killer is tried and executed. Although this side of the argumen...
The death penalty, ever since it was established, has created a huge controversy all throughout the world. Ever since the death penalty was created, there have been people who supported the death penalty and those who wanted to destroy it. When the death penalty was first created the methods that were used were gruesome and painful, it goes against the Eighth Amendment that was put in place many years later. The methods they used were focused on torturing the people and putting them through as much pain as possible. In today’s society the death penalty is quick and painless, it follows the Eighth Amendment. Still there are many people who are against capital punishment. The line of whether to kill a man or women for murder or to let him or her spend the rest one’s life in prison forever will never be drawn in a staight.
The death penalty continues to be an issue of controversy and is an issue that will be debated in the United States for many years to come. According to Hugo A. Bedau, the writer of “The Death Penalty in America”, capital punishment is the lawful infliction of the death penalty. The death penalty has been used since ancient times for a variety of offenses. The Bible says that death should be done to anyone who commits murder, larceny, rapes, and burglary. It appears that public debate on the death penalty has changed over the years and is still changing, but there are still some out there who are for the death penalty and will continue to believe that it’s a good punishment. I always hear a lot of people say “an eye for an eye.” Most people feel strongly that if a criminal took the life of another, their’s should be taken away as well, and I don’t see how the death penalty could deter anyone from committing crimes if your going to do the crime then at that moment your not thinking about being on death role. I don’t think they should be put to death they should just sit in a cell for the rest of their life and think about how they destroy other families. A change in views and attitudes about the death penalty are likely attributed to results from social science research. The changes suggest a gradual movement toward the eventual abolition of capital punishment in America (Radelet and Borg, 2000).
I don’t believe that many people actually sit down and think about what is really going on, or the whole process through it. Crime is becoming more and more of a problem over the years. I don’t think that we should use the death penalty because the cost is hurting the United States more than its hurting that one individual that has committed a crime. Also, if you don’t have the real evidence behind someone then why would you punish them for something that they might have not done. Last, following there innocents, I don’t agree that someone should be put on death row for so long, if you didn’t know what the real story is, because it would cause them to go through so much suffering they’d become crazy. I am against the death penalty because of the cost, innocents, and psychotic effects.
The death sentence has become a huge controversy in the United States over the past forty years. Over those forty years there has been a lot of less tax payers and donators willing to pay money to the justice system to execute a criminal. These types of people that have helped to pay in the past for these executions have stopped due to them not wanting a death connected to them in any way, or because they simply see life in prison a more suitable punishment. Without the funding needed, the criminals on death row are not able to receive their proper punishment within a reasonable amount of time. A lot of times the criminals never get their proper punishment due to lack of funding. Also, criminals that commit extreme crimes may not get the death penalty due to it not being registered as capital murder. These are all issues that have affected the death penalty over time.
The death penalty is one of the most controversial topics debated today. Like every controversial topic, there are two sides to it. Each side has valid arguments for what they believe, however, I believe that one side is more right than the other. Some of the arguments that come into play when discussing the death penalty are the following: the cost of having someone on death row, a person has the right to live, whether or not it discourages crime, and possible innocence of the defendant.
None of them is truly happy that they lost a family member. The families miss the person who seemed so happy, and also know that they are in a better place watching over them. Although the families aren’t happy about losing them, but are relieved to know that nothing else can hurt them. As one family feels sorry for the other family, there could be the family that doesn’t care what happens but wants everyone to suffer the way they are suffering about the tragic death of one family
Capital punishment goes against almost every religion. Isolated passages of religious scripture have been quoted in support of the death penalty, almost all religious groups in the United States regard executions as immoral. There is no credible evidence that capital punishment deters crime from the streets in America. Scientific studies have consistently failed to demonstrate that executions deter people from committing crime anymore than long prison sentences. Moreover, states without the death penalty have much lower murder rates. Executions are carried out at staggering cost to taxpayer. The funds spent for execution should be used to target the issue of killing and find solutions to help communities unite to demonstrate a more peaceful environment. Recent CNN reported how studies done have found that the death penalty criminal litigation, costs taxpayers far more than seeking life without parole. (CNN, 2015) The states spends millions of dollars to put away death row inmates when the funds could be used to help channel society in tune with how to become more positive and getting help to those who need
