Ethics are rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally right and wrong.(Merriam) The nurse is responsible primarily for the patient. Nurses need to promote, advocate for, and strive to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.(FUN) The Dax Cowart Case is the perfect example of the need for autonomy, informed consent, and quality of life.
On July 23, 1973 Dax Cowart, formerly known as Donald Cowart, and his father where flying over a property Dax’s father was interested in buying. The Coawarts did not know there was a propane leak, when they went to start their vehicle there was a terrible explosion. A man seen the explosion, heard Daxs’ screams, and came to help. Dax begged the man for a gun so he could shoot himself. The man refused. When emergency medical services arrived Dax began begging not to be taken to the hospital. Dax Cowarts father died in route to the hospital.
