David Suzuki Young People Summary

This article “young people” by David Suzuki is a persuasive/argumentative article instilling the future of the environment to the young people of the world. David Suzuki also shows us the issues regarding unnecessary and unsustainable waste pollution. David uses young people like a 14-year-old David grassby as an example of how young people can make an impact on society. The article takes a look at the present and focuses on the future. I agree with the statement “Youth speak with power and clarity that only innocence confers and because we love them, adults have to make changes to the way we live” because young youth think they know everything and that they’re always right but they really aren’t. For example, when I was younger I used to think I was old enough to watch rated r horror movies but i really wasn’t, I remember getting really scared and my parents would say “I told you so”, I also used to believe that I didn’t need to go to school, that it was a waste of time but as I got older I realized that school is very important and

that without education you can’t get anywhere in life unless you got really lucky like Justin Bieber or the Kardashians. David believes that the future of the youth is at stake, for example “No group has more at stake in the resolution of the global eco crisis that today’s generation of children”.

This quote shows how the youth of today have been more at stake than the grownups of today. Another example is “Young people are more receptive to new ideas, not having yet invested heavily in the status quo and therefore being able to see with greater clarity”. This quote is significant because it shows how today’s young and innocent people are the best candidates to save the environment because they do not already have their opinions in place. The young youth of today need to understand how important it is to keep our environment clean, to not pollute and to not think that they’re always right when they really aren’t “unsustainable and unnecessary waste and pollution” this shows how this type of pollution is extremely unnecessary and harmful to the

environment. The young youth need to understand that the world is our home and that we should take care of it “we were acting as if the environment can absorb our discards, even highly toxic ones, indefinitely”. This quote shows how badly we treat our environment and that we need to realize that the world is not a place for us to throw our trash. “All young people today have been exposed to chemicals and toxic environmental agents from conception on, and each successive newborn will have higher exposure than any previous generation” this quote is telling us that hurting the environment will only hurt our children. In today’s society people have made attempts to help the environment, we used to never have green bins but now it’s a weekly thing our city does, not a lot of people are using water bottles in order to reduce plastic consumption. In conclusion, the young youth need to realize that they’re not always right and that they should be trying to help our environment by not contaminating it so it can be nice and clean for the next generation.
