The Hunt It all started in the middle of March in the year of 2002. David Hunter a TV host with a very popular hunting show Ducks, Dogs, and Decoys was entered into a drawing for a once in a lifetime hunt to Delta Junction Alaska. If David was picked he would be hunting a famous bull elk called Spitfire nicknamed for his mean attitude, and if the hunter kills Spitfire he or she will receive the great bull elk completely mounted, plus a check for one-million dollars. It all sounds great until you read the last lines on the application. The only downfall about this incredible hunt was he would be in a man-eating grizzly bear’s territory known as Scar. Scar was known to hunters world wide for his fierceness and killing some of the best …show more content…
They were all hoping for a picture of David overtop of Spitfire, smiling and knowing he just saved the love of his life. It wasn't until late they got their news. David drops his head down once again. He looks through his scope and sees the crosshairs slowly dropping down on Spitfire and slowly squeezes the trigger. Grrrrrrrrrrr! Bang!!!!!!! At first David didn't know what hit him harder, the crack of the Remington .308 or the deadly blow of Scar’s massive paw. What happened next David doesn't really remember it happened so fast to him. The force of Scar’s blow started David in a tailspin down the mountain clutching his rifle to his chest holding onto it for dear life. WHACK!!!! David lands on his back, taking a shot that would make any NFL quarterback give up. With his rifle on his chest he silently thanks God and grabs the bolt and jacks a new loaded shell in the chamber. He glances up to see Scar running down the hill at a new top …show more content…
All of a sudden the phone rings, she holds her breath and says a short pray. She answers the phone. After a couple minutes of talking, the man on the other end says with a very desperate rough voice, “I'm very sorry Mrs. Hunter, we are doing all we can, and I'll keep you updated.” Once again the Remington .308 fired off a bullet that lands a deadly blow. It hits Scar right through the middle of his cheats and stops his heart. Scar let out the death moan and started his own tailspin down the mountain. David then passes out and the great grizzly hits the ground beside him like a mini earthquake. One year later, David and Carrie are sitting on the front porch drinking sweet tea watching the beautiful sunset. It took the whole next day to find David after he killed both trophy animals. They had found David passed out and almost dead from all the blood he lost from his wound. Spitfire was dropped in his tracks and Scar was dead before he even hit the ground. David had to be life flighted, but in the end he pulled through. Carrie went through her treatments and is now living cancer free. Now both of them have a story to tell for the rest of their lives, with David's scar on his back to remind him everyday of what

In the short story “The Hunter” the author Richard Stark introduces Parker, the main character of this book. The main character is a rough man, he’s a criminal, a murderer, and even an escaped convict. He’s described as crude and rugged and though women are frightened by him, they want him. Parker is not the classic criminal, but rather he’s intelligent, hard, and cunning. In this story the author carefully appeals to his audience by making a loathsome criminal into a hero, or rather, an anti-hero. The author, Richard Stark uses ethical appeal to make his audience like Parker through the use of phronesis, arête, altruism and lastly the ethos of his audience.
For many people, hunting is just a sport, but for some it is a way of life. In Rick Bass’s “Why I Hunt” he explains how he got to where he lives now and what he thinks of the sport of hunting. There are many things in the essay that I could not agree more with, and others that I strongly disagree. Overall this essay provides a clear depiction of what goes through the mind of a hunter in the battle of wits between them and the animal.
From the corner of the eye, Reaper saw his former protégé aim his Peacekeeper at him and moved to grab his right arm, the bullet pierced his shoulder instead of his head. The mercenary punched the younger man in the face throwing him in the wall.
Five years ago you could have found me hiding under my covers, praying to a god that I no longer believe in with my eyes shut tightly—but not anymore. These nights I offer up a two minute thanksgiving for the sake of karma; I look out into the darkness and I recognize the shadows as objects in my house rather than the faces of my dead grandfathers. It feels good to open my eyes, but I’ve traded in that old ignorant twinkle for a steady calmness. I still duck and cover when an insect the size of my pupil is within five feet of me, but from a distance I know that I am not so different from the tiny creature. If I am a predator, I am not the kind of predator who hunts but rather the one who kills out of fear. I prefer the role of the prey— it suits me well. I avoid conflict: I prefer spending time at home with my wife, I weigh less than 100lbs, and I have been notorious for becoming paralyzed with laughter upon being attacked by testosterone-laden family members. If a human or other animal my size or larger were to want me for dinner, I would be an easy target though my meat wouldn’t feed a family of four.
Furthermore, Birney portrays David as realistic. After falling from fifty feet high and having a rock thrust in his back, David knows his chances of survival chances are slim: “Perhaps … For what? A wheelchair, / Bob?” and again, “I looked / At last in his eyes. He breathed, ‘I’d do it for you, Bob.’ ” (ll. 133-134 and 151-152) Birney reveals how realistic David is through his words. Both him and Bobby know that it would take days for help to come, and whether David would be still be alive by then is uncertain. He wants Bobby to push him over, knowing what to expect if he remained by the ledge
The sweetest hunts are stolen. To steal a hunt, either go far into the wilderness where no one has been, or else find some undiscovered place under everybody's nose.” (Leopold 104)
Then David ran out with Lydia and Wendy back to the door. George had successfully drawn the attention of the lions and brought them away from the door. While David, Wendy, and Lydia were running, David didn't realize he was leading the others right into a stampede of wildebeests. As they were running, Wendy pointed out the stampede and David stopped dead in his tracks. He then realized the stampede was running right towards them. He started to run away from the animals with Wendy and Lydia behind him. However, Wendy had stopped to look at the wildebeests. Lydia then noticed that Wendy was gone and saw her standing in the way of the animals. Lydia called out to Wendy and Wendy looked at her mother. Then she was gone. She had been trampled over by the stampede and Lydia began to sob. With the help of David, Lydia got up ran ran back to the nursery

The men walked outside and began to take 10 paces from each other, although Jackson had been a few duels, Dickinson had the fastest gun in town. Eric leveled the .22 at the little brown blur of fur on the branch and pulled the trigger. The butt of the rifle knocked painfully into his shoulder and the barrel went straight up after the shot, but it was still nearly dead-on, and he saw the bark on the tree disintegrate into a little cloud where the squirrel had been. His father whistled through his teeth.
he ran back to the trench with the shock of the shells and was shot by
David's heart wrenched at the loss of innocence, and ultimately, the loss of hope, he saw in that gaze. Sera had been his source of inspiration so many times in the past that David was half-afraid that he'd used up so much of her spark himself that he'd left none for her. To see her so bitter, so hopeless like this, cut him deep.
