INTRODUCTION
David Carson is a person, who broke the mold of traditional design, without having a proper graphic design education, not knowing the rules of design. He forced typography to change and inspired many creators to redefine what design is. David had an interesting way of creative development, through his design career which he started in 80’s. He commenced his activity as an editorial designer for a very limited audience, and then took his career further, and became highly demanded in more conventional areas of design.
The sub-topic title of this essay is ‘Explosion of subculture’. This metaphor refers to the definition of the process of explosion as an increase in volume and release of energy with destroying itself. It illustrates the process, which took place in many spheres, dealing with subcultures at that time, and in subcultural design of David Carson in particular.
American Heritage Cultural Dictionary gives definition of ‘subculture’ as:
‘A group within a society that has its own shared set of customs, attitudes, and values, often accompanied by jargon slang. A subculture can be organized around a common activity, occupation, age, status, ethnical background, race, religion, or any other unifying social condition…’
Subcultures are hidden or beneath the principal culture, and they preserve their authenticity. They deal with private attributes, which are valuable because of their uniqueness. In other words, the sense of belonging supports their existence.
‘Explosion of subculture’ in this case refers to the process of cultural appropriation of subcultural attributes, which leads to expansion and extermination.

One subculture within the United States is that of the US Army. The Army defends the nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. It is an exclusive group since not everyone in the country serves in the Army.
Counterculture (Pg. 48)- a group whose values, beliefs, norms, and related behaviors place its members in opposition to the broader culture
The Subculture of N.A is a life outside of any expectations formed by the main Cultural Influence. It is a very private organization that I belong to which became a way of life for me. It has values, traditions, beliefs, sanctions and roles. This is the only outside influence in my life that made me develop meaning to my life again. I was a complete and total crack addict who finally hit the bottom of the barrel and started looking for a way to climb out of the grave I dug myself into.

From texts to forums the amount of subcultures from the internet that have been created from like minded individuals are staggering. If you feel like you 're alone or have a weird interest chances are that there is already a website, forum group, and more information on it then you probably need to know. With the widespread nature of culture one must look at what a culture is and if this example is even pertinent. A culture is defined by google is “The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively:” The arts and manifestations that are achieved through a collective? That sounds exactly like public forums, websites, and other forms of internet communication to achieve a goal or art. Where Gloria Anzaldúa’s definition of culture refers more to a culture that is nearby and directly impacted her this anonymous and virtual collective of minds is a completely different example that isn 't defined by Gloria Anzaldúa’s “Borderlands/La Frontera: The New
Culture, a significant aspect of an individual identity, tending to be defined from your birth, woven by the gods: however, I defy the hand of fate by picking my own cultural identity... For why should I be forced into the culture that was imposed upon me, just because of my heritage, religion, beliefs, and customs; instead of discovering my own and being myself. I am to tell you the culture I subjugate myself into; a sub-genre of gaming and anime culture, collectively called otaku, and help broaden your mind to the new phenomenon of a different type of pop culture.
A subculture can consist of any small group outside the central or key majority group. The groups can range from an organized crime group, to an Asian American group, to a religious group, to even a hippie commune. The main focus of this unit is the immigrant subcultures. The immigrant subculture that is becoming more commonplace every day in the United States is the Mexican Americans. Mexican Americans have many religious traditions, ceremonies, customs, as well as art and music forms. There are also various cultural traditions. Mexican Americans have their own identity on the contrary they still have distinct American characteristics.
Carson is a designer whose unorthodox graphic style played a major role in his success in the design world. His sense of typography is original and unique in a way that he does not follow the basis of communication design. For example, his arrangement of text is not what we would normally see which is in order but positioned in disarray creating chaos and confusion which is new and refreshing. His use of interesting visual simultaneously with typography creates an out of the ordinary design where sometimes the images are deliberately obscuring the text that goes with it and occasionally creating an unfinished sentence or word.
MAIN NAME SHEET David Carson was born in Texas in the United States. Many of his design influences have come from his early childhood while travelling around America, Puerto Rico and the West Indies. His first significant exposure to graphic design education came as part of a three-week workshop in Switzerland, where the Swiss graphic designer Hans-Rudolph Lutz influenced him. He then worked in a high school near San Diego from 1982 to 1987. During this time he also carried highly experimental graphic design as the art director of the magazine Transworld Skateboarding. Among his abilities of art directing, graphic designing and film directing, he was also a professional surfer. His immense interest in the surfing culture persuaded him to return to the West Coast where he helped launch the magazine Beach Culture. The magazine only lasted three years but Carson’s pioneering approach to design, particularly toward typography challenged the fundamental aspects of all design and graphic communication. SURFER SHEET Carson’s work was often arresting and powerfully communicative. From 1991 to 1992 he worked on Surfer magazine. The straightforward styling of the covers was a strong contrast to the later "How" magazine covers. Here you could associate with Carson as his unique use of typography filled each cover to give an interesting introduction to the contents. After this came his break into an international profile when he helped launch Raygun magazine, ...
Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison were more than leads of great bands. They were heros of their generations. They had so many talents and each influenced a multitude of people. Aside from being singers and song writers Kurt was also a musician, guitarist and mass-media phenomenon, and Jim was also a poet, film maker and writer. Their groups also had about a twenty year span in between them. Even though it seems you could not compare them you actually can. Unlike fictional writers their material comes more from their life experiences and feelings. Even though it was different things that affected each one you can still see a pattern of similarity between their lives. They both experienced hardships in their lives and also a few unexpected turns. There was a massive amount of stress put on their lives because not only did they have to worry about what they wrote but also what they said. Live performances were constantly being taped, there were interviews and television shows and specials, newspaper and magazine articles, and also public appearances. To them this also had to become a form of artistry. The publicity and fame that comes to band is far greater than any that would come to just one single writer. This was also a factor in their writings and maybe even in their tragic deaths.
A subculture is a group of people who share a distinctive set of cultural beliefs and behaviors that differ in some significant way from that of larger society. Marijuana smokers can be considered a subculture for many reasons. Marijuana is used by millions of people around the world, either for recreational, spiritual, or therapeutic reasons. Some call themselves the cannabis connoisseurs; people who respect cannabis and use it responsibly. Few drugs have been so politicized recently as marijuana has. It is frequently praised by one side and condemned by the other, on the basis of emotional issues rather than an objective view of research.
Everyone in the world belongs to a subculture. Each subculture has its own sets of traditions, relics, and artifacts. Relics and artifacts are symbolic, material possessions important to one's subculture. Relics are from the past; artifacts are from the present. These traditions, relics, and artifacts help shape the personalities of individuals and how they relate with others. Individuals know about these items through storytelling in the subculture. Families are good examples of subcultures. My family, a middle-class suburban Detroit family of Eastern European heritage, has helped shape who I am through story telling about traditions, artifacts, and relics.
A subculture is a cultural group within a culture that differs in one or more ways from the culture. This would include differences in interest, beliefs, like religion, ethnicity, and social or economic status.
A blend of influences from heavy metal to punk rock. This description embodies grunge as an attitude, a form of music and as a style. Grunge music hit the mainstream throughout the late 80’s into the early 90’s. Though grunge did not want to have either of these identities, punk or heavy metal, and in fact rebelled against them. Grunge is just one piece of a larger movement that originated in Seattle, Washington in the mid to late 1980’s. Music with a message. Grunge can be about a sense of rebellion and that is what it took most from punk, was that kick of rebellion, but in a far less political sense and instead, the cynicism was turned inward. Punk music with a message typically speaks out against authoritarianism, consumerism, governments
