How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas is a book written by a journalist named David Bornstein about successful social innovations. David Bornstein is a journalist and author, who specializes in writing about social innovation, which is a style called solution journalism. David Bornstein wrote three books on social entrepreneurship. David was raised in Montreal, Canada and now lives in New York City. He was awarded the 2007 Human Security Award for work in Social Entrepreneurship in October, 2007.
How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas was first published in 2003 and an updated edition was later on released in 2007. The book investigate what we define as social entrepreneur in the modern world. It also gives examples of ordinary people that formed organization centered on making a difference in the world. I enjoyed reading the book because it enlightened my mind with new ways to bring my ideas to life. It also enlightened me by showing me that even one single person can make a surprising difference. Some of the information in this book was new to me but it was very interesting. For example I found the six qualities of Successful Social Entrepreneurs very interesting. In order for one to become a successful social entrepreneurs, one must be willing to self-correct, to share credit, to break free of established structures, to cross disciplinary boundaries, to work quietly and last but not least one also must possess strong ethical impetus. This book also helped me realize that one does not have to be rich or powerful to change the current reality. The nonprofit sector in America is a reflection some of the foundational values that brought our nation into existence. Fundamentals, such as the idea that people can govern themselves and the belief that people should have the opportunity to make a difference by joining a like-minded group, have made America and its nonprofit sector what it is today. The American "civil society" is one that has been produced through generations of experiments with government policy, nonprofit organizations, private partnerships, and individuals who have asserted ideas and values. The future of the nonprofit sector will continue to be experimental in many ways. However, the increase of professional studies in nonprofit management and the greater expectation of its role in society is causing executives to look to more scientific methods of management.
From the second half of the book I enjoyed learning new things and being able to find ways that I could relate these things to my life after graduation and my career. The two chapters that I was interested in were chapter 126: “Why do graduates of school for the deaf hold reunions every other year?” chapter 127: “I’ve noticed that Deaf people travel a lot—more than hearing people. Why? And how can they afford to? Where do they get the money?” I believe that I enjoyed these two chapters because it gave me insight on how Deaf people value friendship in each other it also gives me a closer look on the deaf community.
I found this book to be very moving and inspirational, for the expression received within this book is beyond words. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read, as it has a particular lesson to teach anyone who approaches it.
When deciding on which non-profit organization to give resources to, a person must think of a number of questions that need to be answered in which to choose a certain one. The most pertinent of these questions is the one that asks which cause the person cares about the most. The problem, for a majority of the population, is that they just do not know what they truly care about. That is why the United Way is the best option for donations. The United way does not focus on one specific, but instead works for a variety of different causes focused on fixing some of the different problems inside of the United States. The United Way is an organization, which envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives. It plans to do this by improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. The United Way needs money and time in order to achieve some of these goals. This essay will explain why the United Way is the best organization to give ones resources to.
In the field of genetics, the study of the effect of various genes is imperative in translation and interpretation. As genetic coding influences phenotypic expression, the analysis of specific genes and any polymorphisms are relevant in a clinical setting. One such example is that of personality traits, which are believed to be influenced by specific neurotransmitters, known as catecholamines. Catecholamines are chemicals released by the adrenal glands in response to stress, and operate dually as hormones and neurotransmitters within the body. Commonly, catecholamines mediate functions within the central nervous system, including those of emotional responses and motor control. Inclusive of dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine, the secretion and metabolism of these chemicals is thought to impact upon various mental functions and behaviours.

When I began this class, I had never had any experience or knowledge on non-profit organizations. After reading the chapters and doing the project for CHASI, I began to realize that non-profit could be my niche. I chose to pursue a degree in criminal justice, because of the many job possibilities, but I never would have imagined non-profit being one of those possible careers for myself. I was raised under the philosophy from both sides of my family, that if you give, you will get in return, I believe this so much and I have witnessed it personally throughout this semester. I have given my time and effort to raise money for people, who I don’t know and who are less fortunate than some, and although I may not receive money or items back in exchange, I get to feel a sense of pride, which is more than enough. So when I went to the nonprofit career website and looked through the job listing, there were many that I was interested in but only a couple that I could actually see myself doing.

The relationship between young people and nonprofits can be the start of a significant change in our community, and should be a reciprocal and powerful educational experience. An open-minded and encouraging flow of communication between organizations and community members can be the launchpad for the social and environmental change organizations talk about and try for every day. Together, we can make change – not just a semblance of idealism, but reality, as well.
Throughout this course my paradigms of what a nonprofit organization have been challenged as we have considered the major aspects and leadership challenges of these organizations. Having worked with for profit and nonprofit organizations in the past I was quite confident that I had a clear understanding of the distinctions between the two. I had worked in organizations that regularly used volunteers to accomplish their mission and felt that the management of these processes were simplistic. Despite these misconceptions, I found that I was able to learn a tremendous amount through our reading, peer interactions, group projects and equally important, my volunteer service as part of this course.

I would recommend this book to everyone because it is interesting and it made me reflect about whom I am, and what I am doing with my life. It made me think about all the risk that I did not take because I was afraid of what others think. It made me realize that sometimes I need to be selfish with what I want. It gave me the pleasured to rethink about all the things that I did not say because I thought that it did not worth it. Sometimes it is difficult to understand all those things without being close to death. This book teaches me how can I be happy and be crazy because sometimes what we really thing is insane could be the most normal thing for others. It thought me to not be like everyone else if not to be different because that is only thing that could make us happy.
