Literary Analysis: DARK THEY WERE AND GOLDEN-EYED During the the 1940’s the great depression was at full swing and World War 2 had just ended in 1945. These two events not only played a large role in history but may have also greatly influenced one of the greatest authors, Ray Bradbury. Ray Bradbury saw first hand the effects of the great depression and war and it’s evident that his writings “Dark They Were and Gold-Eyed.” Superficially it may seem like a simple and meaningless story about a family that traveled to Mars with the intent of of escaping the catastrophic war going on Earth and unfortunately became consumed by Mars and became martians as a result. But in reality the short short had many of the symbol such as wind, water and rocket …show more content…
Throughout literature the symbolic meaning of water is frequently used, it can mean death, baptism or purification. In the short story “Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed,” Bradbury use a very similar symbolic meaning for water as well. In the short story water was the final stage of change. Whenever someone would go swim in the canal water of Mars they would come out completely different. Henry Bittering claimed “the water will work and eat away my flesh until the bones show like coral. Just my skeleton left. And then the water can build on that skeleton - green things, deep-water things, red things, yellow things. Change. Change. Slow, deep, silent change.”(Bradbury 8) The water in fact did affect Harry since he no longer wanted to work with the rocket no more and it caused Harry to no longer have that arguing desire to return to Earth. Water was the complete change of earthlings to martians and it removed anything that was like of humanity, water was always a symbol of larger and rapid change in the story. Ray Bradbury chose water to symbolize large change in humanity because during the time in which it was written World Wars, the Great Depression and other important events were occurring and it was inevitable to avoid its affect on you as it’s to drink water. Since, one can’t avoid never drinking water and in a similar manner the people of the time we 're going to be affected by the …show more content…
In the story Harry wife 's exclaimed that “One day the atom bomb will fix Earth.”(Bradbury 2) As you can see, the atomic bomb wasn’t necessarily viewed as something negative by the people in the short story. On the contrary it was viewed as something that was suppose to fix the Earth but it was later seen that did does not occur because the bomb was used to bomb New York and destroyed their only way to return home. The atomic bomb was key because during World War 2 the atomic bomb was first introduced when they bombed Japan and many people viewed it positively because they viewed it has method to quickly end the war but we all know now today that is not true. Today the bombing of Japan is viewed as an unnecessary and excessive use of force, it brought a bad affect in the same way it did in the short story “Dark They Were and
The war was coming to a victorious conclusion for the Allies. Germany had fallen, and it was only a matter of time until Japan would fall as well. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson was at the forefront of the American war effort, and saw atomic weaponry as a way out of the most monumental war ever. As discussed in Cabell Phillips’ book, The Truman Presidency: The History of a Triumphant Succession, Stimson was once quoted as saying that the atomic bomb has “more effect on human affairs than the theory of Copernicus and the Law of Gravity” (55). Stimson, a defendant of dropping the bomb on Japan, felt that the world would never be the same. If the world would change after using atomic weapons, could it possibly have changed for the better? One would think not. However, that person might be weary of the biased opinion of White House personnel. He or she should care more for the in depth analytical studies done by experts who know best as to why America should or should not have dropped the atomic bomb. As more and more evidence has been presented to researchers, expert opinion on whether or not the United States should have dropped the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has also changed. More and more researchers seem to feel that the atomic bomb should never have been used (Alperovitz 16). Despite several officials’ claims to enormous death estimations, an invasion of Japan would have cost fewer total lives. In addition, post atomic bomb repercussions that occurred, such as the Arms Race, were far too great a price to pay for the two atomic drops. However, possibly the most compelling argument is that Japan would have surrendered with or without the United States using the atomic bomb. In defiance of top...
The atomic bomb created under the Manhattan Project set a new level of psychological panic. It influence media, government, and daily lives of those all around the world. The media was covering stories about protection from a nuclear attack and the government was right next to the reporters helping to further the creation of fear with their messages about preparation.
Water is an element that cannot be controlled, with time it will wear away at rock and weaken any metal. Water is also untamable and vital to the survival of every living being on earth. While it foreshadows many misfortunate events and links the events of The Joy Luck Club, it is still untamable and presents itself in
Back when I was a little girl, I always fascinated over water. I remember that I loved to be able to go down to Lake Chatuge, which is directly behind my house, and sit there, thinking about how my wonderful God is to make such a beautiful thing that we do not appreciate like we should. According to Oxford Dictionary, water is “a colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.” Ron Rash used symbolism, which is “something that represents something else” (Mays 205), in his book One Foot in Eden drastically in many different aspects of water. The atomic bomb killed many innocent people, but it was necessary to end World War II.
...ar the use of weapons of this magnitude, the American idea of the Japanese people has changed, and we now have set up preventions in the hope of avoiding the use of nuclear weaponry. John Hersey provides a satisfactory description of the atomic bombing. Most writers take sides either for or against the atom bomb. Instead of taking a side, he challenges his readers to make their own opinions according to their personal meditations. On of the key questions we must ask ourselves is “Are actions intended to benefit the large majority, justified if it negatively impacts a minority?” The greatest atrocity our society could make is to make a mistake and not learn from it. It is important, as we progress as a society, to learn from our mistakes or suffer to watch as history repeats itself.
Water. It expresses its’ power in the form of hurricanes and flash floods. It displays its gentleness, washing dirt off a child's scabbed knee. Water has been used to quench the thirst of many longing throats; and it has been the cause of death to those who unfavorably crossed its path. It possesses the power of total destruction, yet it holds the bases of all life. Generally, water has symbolized cleanliness and renewal. In the Bible, water was used in Baptism, cleansing the soul of original sin and offering a new life in the light of God. Water in itself is a natural purifier, washing the dirt from our bodies. Water is a symbol of transition-from dirty to clean. In Beloved, Morrison uses water to introduce a transition between stages in a character's life. Water separates one stage of a character's life from another.
The Atomic Age represents the most epic era and is composed of diverse controversial issues in the human history. In the late 1945, President Harry Truman informed to drop two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These two bombs quickly yielded the surrender of Japan and the end of the World War 2. However, the impact of it led us to debate whether this decision was actually right or not. First off, it would be hard to imagine how Japan would have been surrendered without the atomic bomb.
Through her usage of water as a motif, Morrison expresses her feelings and helps us to better understand the novel. Water comes to represent birth, re-birth, and freedom and escape from slavery. There is also a deeper meaning to all of this. Water also comes to represent a sort of life force for Beloved. When she just appears for the first time, she comes out of the water. But she also needs to drink a vast amount of water. It seems as though she needs the water to survive. For Sethe, water comes to mean both a sort of re-awakening and a symbol of freedom. This is apparent through her actions and emotions when she was bathed by Baby Suggs. Water also represents freedom for Paul D. This is because he escaped due to the mud created by the water. The motif of water is well used throughout the book to come to signify many things to the characters.

...e atomic bomb on Japan was extremely controversial it ultimately ended in America’s favor when Japan surrendered. According to Karl Compton, “it was not one atomic bomb, or two, which brought the surrender; it was the experience of what an atomic bomb will actually do to a community, plus the dread of many more, that was effective.” Hiroshima and Nagasaki will always serve as a reminder of the tremendous effects powerful weapons can have on a country. America consciously decided to seize Japanese lives in order to save American lives. The attack effected Japan in a massive amount of negative ways but the outcome of the atomic bomb did create positive effects for America. The devastation generated by the atomic bomb will never be forgotten by citizens worldwide. “The atomic bomb was more than a weapon of terrible destruction; it was a psychological weapon.” (Stimson)
Water, in this case, refers to life and rebirth. A third piece of evidence would be Beloved's appearance; she had soft unwrinkled skin. like that of a baby; "She had new skin, lineless and smooth, including. the knuckles of her hands." Pg.
