Catcher Essay In the world of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden the main character has a dark secret. His dark secret is that he's afraid, afraid of forgetting something deep in his past. Holden's hers scared of leaving Allie. All the memories he had he never wants to forget his brother that was taken away. That's why he's frightened of growing up he blames himself for Allie's death, thinks it should have been him and tortures himself for it.He thinks if Allie can’t grow up and be successful he can't either so he never grows but because he know that if he does one day he will forget forget what he really values. The main event was Allie's death itself. Holden wanted to equal to Allie as Allie was all around better than Holden, but when he heard that Allie had died he nearly committed suicide but instead he permanently damaged his own hand he thinks that the death was his own fault and that it should have been him who died he see that Allied's chance at growing was taken away and wanting to be his equal Holden feels that he too should not have the chance to grow that's the main reason for his actions. Secondly he feels worse every time he goes to Allie's grave. He sees the people around he notices that they come to grieve and pay their respects to their loved ones, but he also sees that when it starts to rain everyone runs for cover and keep going on with their lives eventually coming to the grave less and less until they finally forget. This might be where his disgust for humans originated as they always act for themselves and that time corrupts them therefore he never wants to grow up and become like one of them this may also be why he wants to run away and live a simple life with minimal interactions with people as possible never forgetting Allie until the day he can join
