Confucianism:
Confucianism is based on the teachings of a philosopher called Confucius (551-479 BC). Confucius developed detailed rules for personal behavior. Confucius believed that a superior ruler, father, husband or older brother was naturally worthy of respect and obedience. Confucius predicted that trouble would result whenever a bad example was set. Confucianism turned out to be much more of a system of rules for proper behavior and for good government than a religion. The visions and ideals of Confucianism ended up uniting China and it provided the Chinese people with a strong foundation for a long-lasting society.
Daoism:
Daoism is based on the book of Dao, written by Laozi. Dao means the way. Daoists believe that everything in the universe comes from the Dao, a silent pure all-powerful force that existed before there was a heaven or Earth. The Early Daoists believed that the best way to find true peace and happiness was to gain firsthand experience of the Dao, by living in harmony with nature, living simple lives and by not getting angry. When it began, simplicity was an important aspect of Daoism but as time went by, Daoist temples filled up with colour. Today, Daoist priests conduct public rituals in which they offer prayers to the ancient gods. The Taijitsu symbol (the yin and yang) is very important for the Daoists because it represents dark and light. Daoists also believe that it is possible to obtain immortality.
