Freedom can never actually be reached, it is just This idea is shown in Daticat’s book Krik? Krak!. Krik? Krak!, is a series of short stories of fictional Haitian characters going through the struggles of their homeland. Many of these stories end in death and hardship because of the conditions of Haiti. In Krik? Krak!, Danticat uses the symbols of flight, clothing, and death to illustrate the idea of freedom, demonstrating that there is still hope for Haitians. The motif of flight represents freedom in the form of wings and the sky. In “Wall of Fire Rising”, in which a man, named Guy, wants to be free, but knows there is no way he can be. This leads him to jump out of a hot air balloon. Danticat writes, ¨Within seconds, Guy was in the air hurtling down towards the crowd. Lili held her breath as she watched him fall. He crashed not far from where Lili and the boy were standing, his blood immediately soaked the landing spot” (65). Guy acknowledged that there was no escape for him or his family. He wanted to move leave and take the hot air balloon. Then when he saw that there was nothing left for him on the ground, he took to the skies. …show more content…

When they are not wearing clothes they are free. In “Wall of Fire Rising,” Lili, Guy’s wife, is undressing for bed. Danticat says, “Lili let her blouse drop to the floor as she smoothened the lemon over her ashen legs” (54). Her clothing represents her bondage. Lili taking off her dress symbolizes her letting go of her problems. Later, Danticat writes, “He helped her onto the mat, tucking the blanket edges underneath. Fully clothed, Guy dropped onto the mat next to her” (54). This shows that Guy could not let go of his worries. He feels that there is no hope for the future, no freedom. This leads him to jump out of the hot air
