Travel Team takes place in the present time in Middletown, New York. In the story, Danny Walker, the main character, gets cut from the town travel team because he is too short. Danny is one of the best players in the town. Since Danny gets cut from the travel team, his dad decides to coach his own travel team with Danny on it. After the first practice, their team looks very bad, and Danny is certain that they will not win a game. Danny was about to quit the team, but then Colby Danes, the best girl basketball player in their league, and Ty Ross, joined his team. Ty Ross is the best basketball player in their league and he quit the travel team that cut Danny to play with him at the end of the season. Danny’s team then beat the travel team
When I was first reading Boy21, I realized the theme of escape would become very important to the novel. Finley uses basketball as an escape from everything going on in his life. He uses it to block out the past and the future. Erin, Finley’s girlfriend, uses basketball as an escape. She uses it as an escape from her ties to the Irish mob. Russ also known as Boy21 uses his own methods to escape from his troubles. He uses space to block out his past. Russ has a troubled past since his parents’ murder and has to adjust to the horrible town of Bellmont. Bellmont is a hellhole of a town with mobs and gangs taking over. That reason alone is why Finley and Erin want to leave. The theme of escape is very prevalent in the lives of Erin, Russ, and Finley.
Colson Whitehead’s story “Loving Las Vegas” was a flashback to his past experience with Las Vegas, including his two friends Darren, and Dan. Darren was a part of a writing group known as “Let’s Go,” which consists of exploring and writing on specific areas in the country. Glory Road is a motivational underdog story about Texas Western’s 1965-1966 Men’s Basketball team. The film emphasizes how serious racism was during the 1960’s, and focuses on the discrimination the team had to go through along the way due to the simple fact that most of the players on the team were black. Coached by Don Haskins, Texas Western was the first team in history to win the NCAA championship with an all-black team on the floor (Ott). When Coach Haskins was hired to take over the program, he realized that the team he was inheriting was a losing team and was full of weak players.
