According to a famous baseball coach, “Baseball is not a contact sport, but contact with a ball, bat, or another player result’s in the most serious injuries” (Yenko). Jayne Yenko is correct, a point that needs emphasizing since so many people believe that injuries can happen anyway. “there are three types of baseball players: Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen and those who wonder what happens” (Tommy Lasorda). Baseball has been my favorite sport all my life, therefore I would like to learn more about the injuries in baseball. I really enjoy playing ball and want to be more educated about the facts about injuries in baseball. There are two occurrences of ACL injuries, contact and non-contact. An ACL injury through contact
In spite of this the rate of ACL injury is almost equal through all levels of sports, from beginner, to recreational, to professional athletes. The most widely publicized incident of ACL damage has come from Theresa Edwards who was a top female athlete. She was a basketball player who went to the limit with sports. She went beyond her capability and her ligament couldn’t withstand the pressure and snapped. She is not the only but just one example of many who have suffered this same problem. As female athletes continue to become more competitive and aggressive, ACL damage continues to rise.
An Athletic Trainer working at the high school level gets to enjoy a variety of sports and with different sports comes different injuries. With football, the injuries an Athletic Trainer has to tend to are often more on the severe end of the scale. It is not uncommon to see a concussion (see Figure 2) or a torn ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament in the knee) in a football game compared to a softball game where a concussion or an ACL tear (see Figure 1) is less likely to occur. But in a softball game in comparison to a volleyball game, it is more likely to see a black eye or even just a very painful bruise. The more contact in the sport, the more injuries the Athletic Trainer gets to see and try to
...onclusion, injuries can change the way a game is played. The team's efforts can be stopped or jumpstarted based on the situation in which the injury occurred. The morale of a team is marginally affected by injuries in garbage time, which is the last 4 minutes of a game, where the team is just trying to prevent the opponent from doing anything. Most injuries cause issues later on in life. Concussion victims often have permanent brain damage, which affects their life after retirement. Injuries not only devastate a player, it devastates everything around them.
Baseball is a fascinating sport that is exceptionally fun to play. This assignment is all about understanding the physics of a few key aspects of this sport. One might ask what physics could have to do with baseball? Like most sports baseball involves physical motion. Baseball encompasses all three planes of motion through throwing, hitting, and fielding. All of the classical laws of mechanics can be applied to understand the physics of this game.
In my paper I will talk about the basics of the injury, history of the UCL, ways to diagnose a UCL tear, and how to recover from Tommy John surgery, along with some unbelievable facts about this distressing injury. This injury and surgery has revolutionized baseball and prolonged the careers of many great players in the MLB. Tommy John surgery is a very serious injury, especially if you play baseball at a young age. If you’re young enough, it could easily end your career, but for most players they are usually out for close to a year plus. The injury results from the forceful motions involved in throwing a baseball.
Some are trading the fun and experience of diversifying between basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. for year-round football. As a result, overuse injuries are occurring at an alarming rate among these one-sport wonders. For example, "Little League Elbow" describes overuse injuries in kids who are repetitively throwing the ball. Kids are sustaining severe injuries to their growth plates, neck and spinal cord that could end their career in pro-sports before it begins....
Most people don’t think of baseball as a high risk injury sport. Unlike football, hockey or boxing, baseball seems tame in comparison. While it’s true that baseball is not a high contact sport, a variety of injuries can occur to the players in virtually every part of the players body but most notably in the shoulder; some of these injuries can be career ending.
There are many injuries in general, but sports injuries? Sprains and Strains are the most common injuries in sports. “Sprains are injuries to ligaments, the tough bands connecting in a joint. Suddenly stretching ligaments past their limits deforms or tears them” (Hoffman 1). Ligaments are like springs in a sense that when you stretch a spring, it will return to it’s normal state unless they are
It’s 1970, the 12th inning of the MLB All-Star game, and Ray Fosse of the Cleveland Indians is catching. The Reds’ Pete Rose comes running down the base path to home plate and collides with Fosse, resulting in a serious injury. Fosse separated his shoulder, damaged his knee and sustained multiple fractures. Forty five years later, Fosse is still in pain from fractures that never healed properly, but believes it was just part of the game. Home plate collisions in Major League Baseball (MLB) became an issue after Buster Posey, a catcher for the San Francisco Giants , broke his leg and tore 3 ligaments because of a base runner colliding into him in 2011 (Smith 1). Today it is considered a home plate collision when a runner and catcher make harsh
The majority of ACL injuries suffered during athletic participation are of the noncontact variety. Three main noncontact mechanisms have been identified planting and cutting, straight-knee landing and one-step stop landing with the knee hyperextended. Pivoting and sudden deceleration are also common mechanisms of noncontact ACL injury. Basketball, soccer, and volleyball consistently produce some of the highest ACL injury rates across various age groups. Other activities with a high rate of injury are gymnastics, martial arts, and running. In most sports, injuries occur more often in games than in practice. Many injuries have occurred during the first 30 minutes of play. One-reason physicians are seeing more ACL injuries in female patients that more women play sports, and they play more intensely. But as they continued to do more studies, they are finding that women's higher rate of ACL is probably due ...
Contact sports in America, like football and boxing, carry a rich history of the spirit of the game, and the feeling of victory. These games bring us together as we cry out and cheer for our team or fighter as they deliver the winning touchdown, or the knockout that brings them the undisputed champion belt. However, these players are facing injuries that can destroy their career and affect their brain for the rest of their lives. We shouldn’t outlaw contact sports, but we should force safety to become more important. If we want to keep our players safe and continue the tradition of the contact sports we enjoy as a country, then we must evolve our safety in sports, and change the way we view contact sports as a country.
