Dance serves as a creative outlet by tapping into the emotional and spiritual levels of a dancer; but, it does not solely enhance creativity, dance movement therapy also serves as a form of physical exercise. Most dancers believe that dance not only allows them to express themselves, boost their confidence, and improve their mindfulness; but also stay in shape and work through their pain. Through learning the technique of dance people are exposed to the structure of dance. The techniques of dance teach the patient and the therapist what they are able and unable to do. It would seem that learning boundaries would make the patient feel insecure or discouraged but it actually teaches them more about themselves. Poor dancing does not represent a poor personality, it simply represents a specific person's own creative expression. Dance movement therapy classes are often led through imitation, which is when the patient replicates the movements of the therapist, this allows the patient to feel more confident in their movement and to understand the basics of dance. However, the most influential aspect of dance movement therapy on the mind is improvisation. Improvisation allows the patient to follow their own impulses and communicate their own feelings (Fladager). The structure established through the use of imitation allows the dancer to feel a connection to the movements which gives them the creativity to create their own movement in improvisation. Improvisation is the method of dance movement therapy the showcases the relationship between the body and mind because it takes the movements the patient has learned and allows them to create their own language ("Dance/Movement Therapy."). The structure learned through dance movement therapy also intensifies the distraction that dance causes to avoid the negative emotions of the mind. Movement is not only exercise but also a

Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.
The dance cannot exist with music alone; the choreography helps complete the dance. Choreography often involves learning dance from other dancers, or learning a new type of dance to make the existing one more exciting. Going beyond the normal boundary increases the chance that the dance will effectively intertwine the music and choreography, so the dance will go beyond the original idea. Shadowing neurosurgeon Dr. Norgran in high school and pulmonologist Dr. Yaeger in college, has given me a new perspective on going into a career in medicine. These people helped me to see that I would have to be willing to alter the music of my life in order to finish the dance of a medical career.
All of the above elements are strengthened through dramatic skills such as drama, dance and physical education. These dramatic skills lead students to utilize physical movement in an artistic manner to increase their ability to be quick thinkers, problem solvers, memorization skills, self-discipline, task sequencing, and persistence. (Jensen, pg. 81). The kinesthetic arts teach students to be more at ease with who they are
Judith Lynne Hanna is a professor at the University of Maryland who focuses on anthropology, sociology and dance. She combines these topics to analyze how dance can help heal a person and help improve health. In a broader context, dance therapy is a recent form of movement that does not require any form of previous dance experience and focuses on “movement behavior as it emerges in the therapeutic relationship.” (ADTA) Judith Hanna focuses in on broader concept of dance therapy by concentrating on expressive behavior that relieves stress, disabling conditions, tension, and chronic fatigue.
As a student studying kinesiology, I believe that professionals should acquire knowledge of dance because dance is an activity that has to do with physical movements. In my opinion, to be a professional in Kinesiology we must have enough knowledge of the human movement and dance is indeed a topic that requires the knowledge of physical movements. The physical education professionals are not like psychiatrists or physicians that give the clients medicine and tell them what to stay away from. However, people in the other fields, i.g. physical education, have to let clients know that there is a different kind of approach to their issues by introducing them to dance. Dance is related to the history of kinesiology because it has been practiced since long ago and it is still present
My nephew Jaden Hopkins drove my inspiration for this particular case. Jaden was diagnosed with lead poisoning, which led to many of his psychological, developmental and physical disabilities. Jaden lives his life in the shadows. His lack of communication has made it extremely difficult to understand what is going on, how he is feeling, or the treatment he receives from others. It wasn’t until I noticed his reaction to music that I have begun to better understand him. As he jumped up and down off beat to the music I have begun to notice how happy and free he became, it was almost as if I was looking at a completely different person. Watching Jaden evolve helped me to recognize the healing aspects of movement from a different perspective. I was fortunate to be able to share this intent with my advisor Holly Boda- Sutton. She immediately took me under her wing as she advised and prepared for a career in Dance Movement
Movement is one of the most highly debated topics among teachers today, as every individual has his/her own opinions in their teaching philosophy. Teachers must get around barriers caused by the high priorities of standardized testing and low effort to include movement in their classroom; therefore, it puts too much stress on the general education teachers. There are insufficient amounts of space to complete activities requiring movement when in a classroom; therefore, the teachers are incapable of safely navigating students around the room. Some students will refuse to participate in different physical activities, causing frustration when teachers are trying to plan full class activities, and this takes away from academic instruction. It is often that educators exclude these physical activities from the classroom due to stress that is put on the schools to perform higher academically; however, studies show exercise may be a large factor in the student’s performance. There are so many ways to incorporate movement into the lessons that increase the students’ academic achievements while motivating them. As space is limited in the classroom, during the warmer months, teachers can use the outdoors as an engaging experience to refresh the students’ minds and prepare them for new lessons. Physical activities can also be used to reinforce information that was previously taught during lessons to increase the student’s knowledge of the topic. Opinions vary from one person to another, but there is only one way to find the effects that exercise has on the student’s abilities. Physical activity should be incorporated into the classroom because it promotes cognition and academic achievement, improves student behavior and attitud...

Children throughout the world have been dancing since the day they began walking. When a child to take their first steps and puts together the simplest combination of movements, that would be considered as dancing. A question that has pondered for a myriad of years: how does one develop the vision of choreography in the mind and transfer it to human bodies? Choreographers try to explain this question through the pieces that they develop over the years. Their pieces “must be part of an organic whole, supporting the story, characters, and the overall artistic intent” (AACT). The Encyclopedia of Britannica defines choreography as “an art of creating and arranging dances”. The word is derived from the Greek words to “dance” and “write”. Modern day choreographers were asked to define the choreography in one word like the ancient Greeks derived it from. The words that they described choreography as were: art, movement, creativity, planning, and expressions
More psychological symptoms are experienced such as self-doubt and worry, rather than physiological symptoms thus effecting cognitive outcomes more. Movement Education is a very instrumental tool in physical education today. Movement Education was founded by Rudolf von Laban in the early 1900s. Movement Education is a form of teaching which aims to educate and aid in the development of students’ motor skills through physical movement. There are many benefits regarding Movement Education, Dr. Karen Weiller Abels stated, “Children in movement education programs do much more than merely learn skills; they learn to apply movement elements and create solutions to both simple and complex movement problems,” (Abels). Movement Education can be incorporated in many different areas of schooling and in a child’s life, but physical education uses it the most. It is very influential and impacts a child’s physical activity and fitness for the better.
