Dance has significantly influenced me both personally and professionally. I found dance early on in my life. My childhood experiences led me to the arts, mental health and wellness, and into the field of dance/movement therapy. I have worked in a variety of different settings, with a number of different populations, and with people of all ages. Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. Irish Dance has played a large role in defining my identity from a very early age. Not only does it serve as a connection to my Irish heritage, but it also serves as a connection between my mother and I since she has been my teacher since I was four years old. From continent to continent, even in the lowest parts of the world, there is some form of rhythm and dance expression from young to old. In my generation, I feel that the sky is the limit in finding new and exciting ways to dance like nobody’s watching. I also hope that I can be a part of forever joining the old styles of dance with today’s style of dance. Often times, we only, but need to call on those that and teach us the many styles of dance from the past. Amy Manley, writer of Dance Therapy for Depression, briefly explains how dance helps with depression. Manley stated how dance can help battle with depression by saying “Dance provides a way to express and communicate these emotions without words, and without fear of being judged or misunderstood” (web). Dance therapy help numerous of individuals with depression because dance therapy is normally a session with a group of people, which can help people meet others that understand what the other person is going through as well as facing depression by exercising. One exercise, dance that helps people workout and dance at the same time is Zumba. Zumba is for stretching the body and relaxing to mind by dancing with working out. Beginning three years ago, my mom takes me to new york city every June. My mom is a tattoo artist and has to travel a lot for work, so she takes me on this trip so she is able to spend more time with me. Going to New York with my mom makes me feel special because she takes only me (the oldest) out of my siblings. We have visited Times Square, the Empire State building, broadways shows, and more. This special time with her makes me realize how lucky I am to have a mom that cares about me and to cherish every second we spend together.
Dancing is a form of art that allows many children to express themselves through body motion while developing many skills. Children throughout the world have been dancing since the day they began walking. When a child to take their first steps and puts together the simplest combination of movements, that would be considered as dancing. Music also plays a major role in the development of children understanding dance, because it is can be used as an accompaniment, and can help children get a better feel for the rhythm in dances. Over the past century educators have come to the conclusion that dance serves as a form of art, and should be taught in public schools and colleges to help the growth in children of all ages both physically, mentally, and academically.
As a young lady growing up I have attempted multiple sports and activities such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and etc. However, I was never able to allow these extracurricular activities define my in an essential way in high school. Instead of a traditional high school sport, I had the opportunity to make dance an essential talent/interest of mine. Within most of my years of high school drill team dance has had an influential effect on how I define myself. Dance/drill team has had this affect one me because this activity is time consuming, challenging, and I have experienced significant growth within this activity.
Dance has been apart of my life since I was three. Being a military brat I was never around long enough to establish roots especially in the dance community. Once I turned 10 we moved to Clarksville tennessee for the second time and decided that I would get to stay until I graduated. Meaning I also got to find a dance studio and be on a competition team. I had my first dance recital on the day I turned four. Now I don’t remember anything from that day, but I believe that that day is when I learned I loved to perform. I’ve been taking dance lessons since then, and many things that I do now involve performing in some type of way.
When I was a kid, I had a guitar. I also had a piano; I played violin, viola, and cello. I played the recorder and briefly remember playing the xylophone. Though I loved music, I had dreams of being a singer. That is until my childhood crush told me I couldn’t sing. We were in the 3rd grade and I started attending this school in the 2nd grade. He said I didn’t sound good in the 2nd grade, but I got better. From that day on, I never wanted to pursue music again.
I was gifted with a creative act through watching professional ballet; and I also brought enrichment to others through dancing ballet.
