I started dancing ballet before I was even in primary school. Since second grade, I have started my weekends by practicing ballet every Friday afternoon. I have traveled to Vienna Golden Hall to perform ballet with my team of ballerinas. All mates in my team have been through the level tests of the Royal Academy of Dance every year. In my junior high, there were large pressure from school on studying because it is critical if we can get in good high schools that have high ratios of enrollment to universities in China. It was considered a matter of “future”. Additionally, we learnt science at school and I gained a passion for physics during that time. The final year of junior high in China was beyond intense. Therefore, at the beginning of that year, I had to make a choice: to give up my love for ballet to focus on school work, or to keep ballet but study even harder for school to keep a good grade. It frees me of the breathless school work so my mind would not be stiff. I am scientific, but I am not nerdy, because I have additional passions on things other than science. Also, it was a discovery by myself that girls come and go in my ballet team and the remaining were not the kinds that care much for school. They are mostly gorgeous in appearance or from a rather rich family that they could choose a “future” with art special admission to colleges or to work for family business. Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.

As I got older I started lessons on other styles of dance such as Modern dance and Tap and I have been learning both these styles weekly for almost 10 years. I have completed up to Grade 5 in Ballet and Singing, Intermediate Foundation in Modern dance and Grade 4 in Tap. Also, on a Saturday morning I assist the Ballet and Modern dance teachers at my dance school. I help in the lower grade classes and help the children learn their steps. I have been in three pantomimes with my dance school and this sparked my love for West End musicals. Growing up I never had any hobbies besides playing video games if that count as one. Dance was the first real hobby I ever had. Dance impacted me by making me less shy in front of people. I made a lot of friends through dance. I would walk over to my friend's house every weekend and we would just session and teach each other about break dancing.
When I was a kid, I tried every sport out there. I was in basketball, softball, and even gymnastics. From all those sports, excluding gymnastics, I realized that I do not enjoy the pressure of competing directly with another team. Because of that, I quit each of them after a year or two. Dance I continued throughout elementary school and until now. In middle school and high school I added other activities, like cheerleading, speech, show choir, and more.
Before, balancing my studies and career was just an option, but now it turned into a compelling obligation. Finishing all my tasks in just a day lessened my hours of sleep and it was not easy because sleep is very important especially if I have to maintain a consistently high energy when I dance, and because of my lack of sleep, I often arrive late at school and our prefect of discipline got stressed with me every single working day. After a few months, my technique got better and my body, well, very close to paper-thin, but my endurance to lethargy lessened. Exam week came and my eye bags got thicker and darker, well at least I answered almost everything with certitude even if my body covets to pass out.
My goal in this assignment was to portray the struggles I faced with trying to pursue dancing, yet despite the odds, I succeeded in joining the competition team to follow my dreams. Once I realized that I loved dance, I was too old because girls usually start to train seriously at a young age. The older, competition girls who danced their choreography for us inspired me and instilled a passion for dance in me, but I was already eleven. So, this assignment tries to display the struggle and rejection I had to overcome with dedication and devotion to dance in order to prevail in my journey.
Welcome parents, administrators, and classmates to the eighth grade promotion. After surviving through three years of essays, assignments, and tests, we finally graduated. Everyone here has accomplished so much since sixth grade. For me, I was able to wake up early roughly 540 times in the past three years. If I have learned one thing during my time at MJS, it is that I’m not a morning person.
All we did was jump around and play games, but watching the older girls dance and seeing how elegant they looked made we want to pursue ballet. After school, my father would drive me straight to dance class where I would stay for seven hours. The time I spent in the studio was long and hard. Each day I would push myself to something I had not been able to do the day before. After years of training, I finally received my first pair of pointe shoes when I was eleven years old.
