After reading the article “This is the most powerful 30-year-old in Boston” I have been given the impression that Dan Koh is a goal oriented, highly intelligent hard worker. Although Koh is only thirty, his determination and industrious personality led him to become The Chief of Staff for Mayor Marty Walsh. This article contained several valuable elements of advice for me to absorb in order to grow as a successful college student. The three most important elements I took from this article is to have an open mind, accept that mistakes will happen, and be very assertive towards a goal you want to achieve. Having an open mind is vital for thriving in the business world, along with my undergraduate experience at Curry College. Koh talked about how his youth can be an advantage, while working in a career that involves effective communication in an innovative community. Koh spoke about when he educated Mayor Walsh on the popular smart phone app Uber, and how it accommodates the people of Boston. “I think he saw I could bring to the table a set of perspectives that he didn’t have. I have and I will again.” In life and politics, disappointment and criticism from our mistakes is inevitable. The best thing to do with our misfortunes, is to accept that it happened and take that knowledge we obtained from them as a lesson. Chad Miller, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Dubuque, excellently showcases leadership characteristics each time I work with him. Throughout my one and a half years working underneath him, I have witnessed many great exchanges of leadership from Chad to customers, employees, and his other managers. Sometimes I will put one of those 3 in front of school and I usually end up paying the price for it. When I receive a bad grade on an assignment, it will usually ruin the rest of my day once I see it, and some days I want to give up on that class. I'm usually upset until I tell myself that it is an easy fix and all I have to do is work harder on the next assignment that comes my way. After receiving a bad grade on an assignment my next grade satisfies me and I am pleased with myself. At first I'm at a low, im upset. But then my mind wants to soar, so I push myself extremely hard to do better, After getting a few good greats I them become lazy and end up getting another bad great. I must also acknowledge my role in my transcript’s substandard showing. As my SAT and ACT scores indicate, I have the potential to achieve success in any field chosen. I feel Mary carries a lot of knowledge from experience from teaching an adult course and having children going through school. This article inspired me to not look at failure in such a negative way. This article also made me feel that the passing averages of high school courses should be raised significantly to ensure we are not cheating our children and they have sufficient knowledge to Carrie them through life. I believe that many students including myself can benefit from Mary’s theory that failure should be a tool used by teachers to motivate students. If I was held back rather than passed off like many other students today I could have completed college and been already into a steady carrier achieving my goals.

You may not particularly like doing work. You may not like the class, but the work you do is a representation of you, so do your best work!
For the past three months myself and others have worked hard to complete and turn in the work you’ve assigned to us. Of course not all students take the material and the work seriously, but a majority of our class does. We use strategies that you’ve taught to us, and have shown you improvement from the beginning till now. You may say what we get is what we get, but I believe that our grade should also reflect on the
...ve that I lost mark just because my paper did not meet the professor’s expectation. In fact, I did misunderstand the professor’s guideline about focusing on only one main idea in one paragraph. However, I eventually realized and admitted the fact that I did miss the points after I had a talk with Dr. Mittoo. When I argued that I followed his requirement for sure, he just asked me some simple questions, and he gave me time to figure out the answer. After I found the answers to his questions, I had to admit that I did miss some points. And then, Dr. Mittoo told me what the right ways were to do the assignments. In this case, I admit that I had faults in the writing assignment, and I am fully convinced that my paper did not answer the professor’s questions. I now believe admitting mistakes can help me learn and improve myself, rather than it being a signal of weakness.
But, in this day and age students act as if it's impossible. DPS fail to inform their students that failing is a real thing and it can happen to anyone. Students assume that if they put in little effort, and come to class they’ll pass. They don’t consider their actions, assignments, and homework. Students are oblivious to the fact that failing could make or break them. If DPS schools wanted to see a drastic increase in their students academics and a decrease in summer school attendees, they would threaten their students with failing. It sounds cruel, but it works. Failure motivates us to push ourselves until we are at where we want to be. I know first hand, I received my first “D” during my sophomore in my geometry class. I refused to let that get me down, and worked until I brought my grade up to an “A”. I didn’t let anything stand in my way, looking at that horrendous grade only made me want to try harder. In Conclusion, I think teacher’s shouldn’t be like a “wild animal “or impetuous (294). Teachers should not be abusive like the teacher in the essay. I believe if we can be encouraging by telling a student that they did good, but they need to work on a particular part. Instead of belittling them, ask them engaging questions to get them to expand their minds, or to think more provokingly that would have a bigger effect. If we find that balance in the “force” and fight for it and for our students we can have a positive effect and still be cool.
Life is going extraordinary right about now. I feel successful and strong. I am now in 6th period getting ready to learn about World War One. When all the sudden, Mrs.Reed stormed into the classroom. “Can I see Jack, please?” she asked. “Absolutely!” Mr. Thomas says happily. My heart sank into the fiery pits of regret. “I’m dead,” I mutter. Mrs. Reed brings me into a classroom filled with nobody. She then explains and lectures me on the decision I made just a few weeks back. She said that I either take an F for my 3rd quarter grade or take a write-up. I need stupendous grades if I want to be successful and accomplish my dreams in life. So, I took the write-up.
Now most would argue that mistakes in writing are simply things such as grammar errors or typos. To an experienced writer on the other hand a mistake is so much more. A mistake is not some petty error such as those, as grammar and spelling are second nature and are easy to spot and fix. Mistakes are an experience, something that can be learned from more so than any book or lecture. They represent a human element of imperfection, that there are advantages to disadvantages. To and experienced writer to define a mistake as being something so simple, is appalling. This is something that you and your students must understand, that mistakes are learning experiences. That they must be used not to feel disappointed over, but rather feel joy in the fact that you have more to learn. Writing is very much subjective as is any art form, to teach your students to produce these factory-made papers that have no passion. Simply because it is what fills the minimum requirements. That anything that falls outside of those parameters is a lost cause riddled with mistakes. Is an insult to writing as a whole. Writing mustn’t be taught as a method of conveying information. More so as a process of combining different mechanics to develop a masterpiece, the while correcting it until the writer is the one that feels
Self-reflection can be challenge. When I reflect on what I have done, I must also consider what I could have done differently to help things go more smoothly. Ironically, my first day of communications class was one such incident. At the end of class we were given a guide to help us understand the expectations for APA style. The instructions, however, varied slightly from instructions received in other courses in that it called for a different font to be used. While some students were confused by it, it seemed that others were more bothered. The teacher was quickly bombarded with several questions. I recognized that the font listed is the same that I found through the ADA (American’s with Disability Act) website over the summer while doing
