Months before Emmett's death in 1955, two African American activists in Mississippi had been murdered. An NAACP field worker, the Reverend George Lee, was shot and killed at point blank range while driving in his car after trying to vote in Belzoni. A few weeks later in Brookhaven, Lamar Smith was shot and killed in front of the county courthouse -- in broad daylight and before witnesses -- after casting his ballot. Both were active in black voter registration drives. No one was arrested in connection with either murder

October 2002 was the beginning of what seemed like the longest three weeks in the Washington Metropolitan Area. No one wanted to believe that what was happening would change the lives of thousands. What appeared to be a random killing spree by an enraged lunatic, turned out to be part of a massive plan that claimed the lives of ten innocent people in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. When these shootings first began, they were believed to be linked to a white van or truck. It was later discovered that these shootings were being carried out by a man named John Allen Muhammad, and his teenage accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, in a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan.
He worked hard and had his own business cutting trees. McMillian became well known due to an affair he had with a local married women Karen Kelley. Kelly was a white women and it became big news once in Monroe County about her affair with a black man. A few months after the murder of Ronda Morrison, a criminal named Ralph Myers was arrested for the murder of Vickie Pittman in a nearby county. Myers was a well-known criminal who was into drugs. Myers, but had started seeing Kelly during the months after McMillian and her split. Myers now in jail was trying to pin the murder on people including Sherriff Tate of Monroe County. Once he realized that was not sticking, he changed his story. Stevenson (2014) “… he had been involved in the murder of Vickie Pittman along with Karen Kelly and her black boyfriend, Walter McMillian. But that wasn’t all. He also told police that McMillian was responsible for the murder of Ronda Morrison.” (p, 33). Ralph Myers has now implicated McMillian, an innocent man, for the murder of Morrison who he no part in the event. McMillian was quickly charged and sent to death row before even being sentenced for the murder or Morrison. Within a year or so Myers and couple other people gave false testimony and McMillian in less than two days was sentenced to capital punishment with the death
The story in discussion is that of Meagan Grunwald since it was one for which various articles from different online sources were available due to the large controversy it had sparked a while ago. Meagan Grunwald, a teenager of seventeen was convicted in May 2015 on 11 counts, including aggravated murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery and use of a controlled substance and was sentenced to 30 years to life with the possibility open for parole.(Associated Press, 2015) The girl had engaged in a 51 mile crime spree that left one sheriff 's deputy dead and another wounded with her 27 year old boyfriend Jose Angel Garcia-Jauregui who was killed in a shootout with police in the spree which included a driveway of a speeding car in a three county
But back then there were no black people in law enforcement. The two men were only tried for kidnapping and not for murder (Mamie Till). This just explains how vague the police and FBI searched to really find out what had happened. There were witnesses to the kidnapping (Emmett’s Family) but, they still did not find the men guilty due to lack of evidence. The trial was a two week speedy trial and the men were never convicted of anything (Gale Student Recourses). Adding to the fact that the trial was speedy, there was a decent amount of evidence to tie the men to kidnapping but, with the all-white jury there was really no chance of justice
...ebrooks, Chris Richardson, Latonya Wilson, Aaron Wyche, Anthony Carter, Earl Terrell, Clifford Jones, Darren Glass, Charles Stephens, Aaron Jackson, Patrick Rogers, Lubie Geter, Terry Pue, Patrick Baltazar, Curtis Walker, Joseph Bell, Timothy Hill were all victims of this ruthless killing. Regardless of who was behind this killings, each one of them got their lives cut short due to someones cruelty. In conclusion, the Atlanta Missing and Murdered case, a major breakthrough to an investigation which had seen 29 African- American children and adults murdered in a series of killings came with the arrest of 23 year old Wayne B. Williams, who was convicted of the crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment. This was one of the darkest moments in the history of Atlanta, a period of darkness which will forever live in the minds of both the victims and the people of Georgia.
When horrific crimes occur in large cities, many of them can be chalked up to gang violence or to the larger population of that specific city. But when horrific crimes happen in small cities like Lincoln, Nebraska, people begin to ask questions like who did this and why. In 1958, a nineteen year old man named Charles Starkweather put the entire state of Nebraska and possibly the entire nation in a state of terror. With his murder spree taking only three days, Starkweather had collected a body count of ten bodies, including two teenagers and a young child. Understanding Starkweather’s past and state of mind begins to answer the second question of why.
In 1967, Newark's police force was 1500 members strong with only 10% being Black. Police would stop and question African- Americans for no reason other than racial profiling. The number of incidents of Police brutality and Blacks dying in Police custody had risen tremendously. For instance, in the summer of 1965, 22 year old, Lester Long (shot after traffic stop), 26 year old Bernard Rich (died in prison cell, under unexplained circumstances). Later that year, 17 year old, Walter Rich ("accidentally shot" while being searched for illegal substances). No police officers however, were ever prosecuted and very few of the charges even made it to a jury.

Thought out this passage Patricia Highsmith implements Guy’s night alone as a way to criticize and show her own views on a variety of topics. In particular she condemns the ideas of laws of society and their punishments. Guy scrutinizes the law as something that he is not genuinely concerned about and views their punishments as something that he can view without great concern. Also Highsmith explores the concept of conscience and the weight it can put on a person. Through Guy’s guilt and internal conflict, which is displayed in his thoughts throughout the passage,Highsmith shows the how ones conscience can be conflicted.Lastly Highsmith shows her views on good and evil through Guy’s internal conflict,
This story will always stick in my mind, mostly because someone snapped over something so minuscule and innocent lives where token. This teaches a lesson of not only beware of the people I meet online but also you can never be too careful when it comes to trusting people around you and your family. Just to think someone so young can commit a crime so heinous. That’s terrifying. Many lesson can be learned from this and this

Four months passed by, and trials were set in motion regarding the case. Twenty-one men were tried during this time but nobody was convicted for the murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. However, on November 24, Horace Doyle Barnette came to the FBI to confess on what happened on June, 21. If he hadn't had done this, we may have never found out what had actually happened on that night. He exclaimed that he was eating dinner at his friends Jimmy Arledge's house (a Ku Klux Klan member) when Arledge got a call from another Klan member telling him they had a job. Arledge agreed and asked Barnette if he wanted to come. Barnette also agreed to participate in the job not knowing what it was. Barnette continued to tell the FBI that Cecil Price (the patrolman that pulled the three men over) was also a Klan member and been following them for a while. Price took his chance when he saw them on the road and pulled them over to arrest them. It was all a set up. When Price got them to the jail, he organized the attack on the three men. He contacted Edgar Ray Killen, the leader of the Ku Klux Klan. Killen rounded up 2 cars full of klan members, when they were ready, Price released the men and the KKK began their chase for them. When they caught up to the station wagon, they pulled guns on Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner and ordered them to get in their car. They took the men to Rock Cut road were they
