The Dakota Apartments The Dakota apartments are apartments on the upper west side of Manhattan. These apartments were constructed during the years 1880-1884. The reason why these apartments are called the Dakota Apartments is because, at the time it was built, it was as remote and out of place like the Dakota Territory. The developer, Edward Clarke, introduced the concept of bringing wealthy living to New York City. However, the Dakota Apartments weren't originally meant for the super rich, but for mid to upper class people such as lawyers, and bankers, and businessmen. Citizens were first skeptical of living in the detached part of the city. Two decades later, though, people began to flock to the area and as a result it became a …show more content…
Other famous people who applied to live in the apartments, but were denied were Antonio Banderas, Alex Rodriguez, Billy Joel and Madonna. Today, Yoko Ono lives in the Dakota. She is an artist and is the widow and second wife of John Lennon. The Dakota Apartments are famous for the murder of John Lennon on December 8, 1980. Mark Chapman was the murderer of Lennon and had shot him multiple times at the 72nd Street entrance after he came back to the apartments after a recording session. Soon after, police and medics arrived and Lennon was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 11:15 P.M. that night. Five years after Lennon's death, Strawberry Fields, a quiet section of Central Park was officially dedicated to him. Lennon's music gave inspiration and hope to people and his living mission and memory still lives on in Strawberry Fields. This part of Central Park was named Strawberry Fields after one of Lennon's favorite songs, "Strawberry Fields Forever". At Strawberry Fields there are benches and elm trees. Also, a mosaic is seen with the word imagine on it. This is from one if Lennon's songs. The mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and was given as a gift by the city of Naples, Italy. The main architect behind Strawberry Fields,
March 30, 1981 was a peaceful day. President Ronald Reagan was walking outside enjoying the fresh air when suddenly shots were fired. Six shots were fired in total, but only one shot hit Reagan due to a bullet that ricocheted. Luckily, Reagan was hit in the abdomen; therefore, he survived. The “mastermind” behind the attempted assassination was a man named John Hinckley. Hinckley believed by going through with this assassination it would be a romantic scenario for himself to confess his undying love for the actress Jodie Foster. Before long it was time for the Hinckley trial and after hearing his side of the story, the jury came to the conclusion that he was crazy. Hinckley was later found not guilty by reason of insanity and admitted to

Like many parks in New York City, Prospect Park fell into decline after World War II but was revitalized thanks in large part to the establishment of the Prospect Park Alliance in 1987. Today the park is known as Brooklyn’s crown jewel and hosts nearly 10 million visitors each year as well as popular food festivals, concerts and other
As the moving in of new residents filled the community with new cultures, many old life styles are slowly disappearing. This quote in document E says: “Those tired old landmarks are being replaced with market housing, trendy eateries and a whole new population that’s heard about, but has likely never seen what the Downtown Eastside was all about.” The main point in this quote is while the new things are coming into the DTES, they did not care nor preserve the old life-stye of that place. While they are building new shops and housings, they are also removing what has stayed there for a long time, the old poor and rugged culture that represented
At 5:20 p.m. on October 2 2002, a victimless shot was fired through a window of a Michaels Craft Store in Aspen Hill. About an hour later, at 6:30 p.m., James Martin, a 55-year-old program analyst at NOAA, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Shoppers Food Warehouse grocery store, located in Glenmont.
Charles Manson and the Manson family committed gruesome crimes that shocked Los Angeles in 1969. The actress Sharon Tate and four others were ritualistically slaughtered in her Hollywoods Hills home. The murderers had left cryptic messages on the walls in the victims blood, and law enforcement were stumped by the multiple stab wounds found on the victims. The next day a married couple, Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, who were successful shop owners, were found in their Las Feliz home murdered in the same way as Sharon Tate and her friends.
Haight Ashbury and its history has been an amazing phenomenon to many visitors. I have found that many people have visited to see the art, learn about the culture, and even hear about what kind of music everyone was obsessed with. Haight was named a “Vibrant Hippie History” because of its bright colors and very artsy buildings. In 1967, Haight formed the famous heyday, which included the infamous “Summer of Love.” This “Summer of Love” included a very psychedelic movement of experimentation and peaceful protests. The way that Haight Ashbury died out was caused by a fall but was originally a neighborhood of revolutionaries, famous singers, and cult leaders. I observed this fall and found out that it had been caused by people trashing it and abandoning it. It was later then filled with homeless people and drugs.
His family enchants the world with music, in separate musical groups, but with similar genres such as rock and pop, the styles John was also known for. His oldest son, Julian founded The White Feather Foundation in 2009, embracing humanitarian and environmental issues. His father had told him if he (John) had passed away, a white feather would signify he was okay. The white feather represented peace. Julian remains in touch with his step family as well. In commemoration of John Lennon 's 70th Birthday, they unveiled the John Lennon Peace Monument in Liverpool, England, where John had grown up. The Liverpool Airport was also renamed the Liverpool John Lennon Airport with the lyric from the song "Imagine," "above us only sky" (Lennon, Imagine) written on the roof. Of all the songs he had in his repertoire, "Imagine" left the greatest impact. In Central Park in New York City there is an "Imagine" mosaic to memorialize this artist and celebrate his life. When John 's body was cremated, Yoko scattered his remnants in the Strawberry Fields section of the park, also where his monument
John Lennon was very outspoken and contributed greatly to his mission of peace. “He became an increasingly important symbol of the burgeoning counterculture” (DeCurtis). John went against the normal acts and beliefs of society and spoke out. He always expressed his true views and nothing else. This is because he believed in questioning authority and not conforming for anything.“[He] helped redefine the rules of acceptable behavior for rock stars” (DeCurtis). This once again shows his desire to stand out and speak out. He reformed many ideas and practices that needed reform and some that did not. But no matter what he was doing, it was always supporting the fight for peace. Even when it did not involve politics or the stand for peace, he acted differently from what was expected of him by the majority of the population. “How the chords can change the world. To me, that is John Lennon” (Ono 117). John thought that change was necessary, and he intended to do everything he could to insure that it happened. “A man who stood up!” (Ono 117). John expressed and conveyed his beliefs, no matter the consequences. His immense support of the fight for peace helped more and more people see a different side of the world.

We’re all familiar with the infamous assassination stories, but most of use would agree that assassinations are rarely justifiable. While many of the victims hold controversial political views with which their assassins disagree, it is nevertheless unjustifiable to kill anyone that has not posed a threat to you or someone else you care about. A perfect example of this occurring in American history is the assassination of John Lennon, a famous member of the Beatles. The assassination of John Lennon was unjustified because he was an inspiration to a lot of people and believed in peace around the world: however, his assassin believed because he wanted Lennon’s fame he should have been assassinated. John Lennon was assassinated on December 8, 1980.
