Fitzgerald shows that Americans are greedy people who only truly care about their materialistic desires. That people can be judging others for their lack of materialistic goods like money. Daisy was born into a very important, rich family. This is something Gatsby was never apart of with his family. Before Gatsby went off to war him and Daisy loved each other. But after Gatsby left for war, Daisy ended up marrying a wealthy man named Tom. She left him for a reason of her own. The reason has to do with the materialistic decisions and desires of Daisy. We find out that reason once Gatsby attains his prestigious wealth and big mansion. She has no idea how to make up her mind when it comes to Tom and Gatsby. She is attracted to Tom for his wealth and status quo that he provides her with. Here, dearest'." She groped around in a wastebasket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls. "Take 'em down-stairs and give 'em back to whoever they belong to. Tell 'em all Daisy's change' her mind. Say: 'Daisy's change' her mind!'" This quote is significant because it shows how Daisy truly felt about who she loved. On her wedding day she got a letter from Gatsby. After reading the letter she gets very drunk and upset and rips the three-hundred and fifty thousand dollar pearl necklace off of her neck. This can symbolize how Tom's wealth and reputation was holding back Daisy from going with who she thought to be her true love, Gatsby. The Expensive necklace symbolizes Tom and her destroying it shows her “love” for Gatsby. After Tom and Daisy finally get married, Daisy finds out that Tom has been having an affair behind her back. “At first happy in this marriage, she later discovers that Tom is having affairs” (Secondary Source).
