By far, the smartest character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby is Daisy Buchanan. Despite this, Daisy is still a careless person who cowers behind her money. Because of this she falls short of Gatsby's expectation of her, while she is still beautiful and happy, she is also sadistic and shallow. At the end of the novel, Gatsby and Tom get into a huge fight about their love for Daisy, at the end of this fight, Gatsby tries to get Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him but she could not do that. It was true that Daisy had love for both of these men and she would have to decide for herself which was right for her. After the argument, Daisy finds herself driving with Gatsby in his car. It was the accumulation of all the suspicions in the book leading up to this point. This heated argument was all about Daisy and who loved her, but they never really took her into account when all of this was happening. During Gatsby and Tom's confrontation, Daisy was in awe of what was happening, she was terrified. She even states “Please, Tom! I can't stand this anymore”.After this, Daisy ends up joining in on the argument. Some could argue that after this heated confrontation, Daisy was so overwhelmed that she didn't notice Myrtle in the middle of the road. Things were all happening fast that night and with everything that occurred, it's safe to speculate that Daisy might have been a little flustered driving the car that evening. The question is, is Daisy the type of person to be so overwhelmed and flustered that she would accidentally commit a crime? According to the novel, she is. Throughout the story we have seen Daisy upset and angry, but never at the level we see on that hot day of Gatsby and Tom’s confrontation.
