Daisy Buchanan And Jay Gatsby Alike

In the novel “The great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a character by the name of Jay Gatsby spends half his life longing after his love daisy Buchanan and is set on doing whatever possible to get her. Similar to Fitzgerald, Gatsby was in love with a women he couldn’t have; so he did everything in his power to rise in money and fame to get her. Fitzgerald and Gatsby are also similar because they were both in the United States Army. Therefore the character in the novel “The Great Gatsby” who most reflects the real life of the author, F. Scott. Fitzgerald is Jay Gatsby.

Fitzgerald and Gatsby are alike because they are both pining after the girl that they love but can’t have. Fitzgerald met Zelda and Gatsby met Daisy, both men fell in love with

these women but realized they couldn’t have them because they were too poor. To solve this problem they both went to whatever lengths to get the money needed to marry the women they loved. Zelda wouldn’t marry Fitzgerald because he was broke, so he wrote a book to make money, then he used his fame to get Zelda back (“F. Scott Fitzgerald…”). Gatsby met Daisy near the army base; they fell in love but didn’t marry because Gatsby didn’t have enough money so he obtained money and used that fame to get her attention (Fitzgerald 79,90). This evidence proves that both Gatsby and Fitzgerald were pining over women they couldn’t have.
Another way Fitzgerald and Gatsby are similar is they were both in the army. Fitzgerald was second lieutenant whereas Gatsby was first lieutenant. “Fitzgerald was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry and assigned to camp Sheridan outside of Montgomery, Alabama” (“F. Scott Fitzgerald”). “They (Fitzgerald and Gatsby) joined the army as lieutenants and met the loves of their lives while in the service” (Lisk). This evidence shows that Fitzgerald and Gatsby truly started their adult lives while in military service.
On the other hand Nick Carraway could also be similar to Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald and Nick Carraway are similar because they are both people watchers. “I’m inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores” (Fitzgerald 19). Fitzgerald enjoyed and was very good at observing people (F. Scott Fitzgerald…). Nick starts off by saying he doesn’t judge, this causes many people to confide in him. Also all throughout the book as Narrator Nick is observing everything and everyone around him. While there is good evidence to suggest Fitzgerald is similar to Nick Carraway there is more evidence to support Fitzgerald and Gatsby.
In conclusion even though Nick Carraway and Fitzgerald are both people watchers, Gatsby has more similarities with fitzgerald. Fitzgerald and Gatsby were both pining after the people they loved. And they were both in the army. Therefore, F. Scott Fitzgerald is most similar to Gatsby.
