Similar themes are present in “Daddy’s Weirdest” by Rebecca Barry and “Guillotine” by Jon Bellion, but the authors used different strategies to reveal those messages. Judging people is a problem in life because it also affects yourself. Supporting people on what they do and why they are different helps you get through life. This is because if you show support to people in how they are different, they will support you and your differences from other people. Everyone is different in their own way, not only physically different, but mentally and emotionally. In the story “Daddy’s Weirdest” by Rebecca Barry, the text that really showed this theme was shown on page 92. “I should also admit that when not humiliated by my dad’s bizarre behavior, I have to love and admire the he’s a free spirit.” Another place the theme stood out to me what in “Guillotine” By Jon Bellion, especially in the lyric, “I know that you love me, love me. And,“There's bones in my closet, but you hang stuff anyway” The story “Daddy’s Weirdest”by Rebecca Barry, is a first person view on a girl who has a dad that works all around the world as a photographer.
But with his un-original personality, she finds him embarrassing and feels he’s ruining her chances to ever be “hip”. She wants to be best friends with the most popular girl in her class, Krista Marshall. She invites her to go on a vacation with her and her parents. Her dad’s idea of vacation is camping, and it goes downhill from there. She soon realises that she's not the only one with a weird dad and comes to a realization that she loves that he's a very free-spirited person. It was somewhat a character change, but deep down she knew that she could never hate her dad’s strange personality. Unlike the song “Guillotine” by Jon Bellion, the song shows more of a relationship point of view on this theme. Guillotine is saying the guy is crazy but she is not bothered by it and likes him for who he is. Which is why the themes are slightly similar between the story and the
song. The story and the song show two different way of expressing the theme from two different points of view as well. For example, I think that the story shows the theme from more of a family point of view and shows it in the strategy of character change. On the contrary though, the song shows this from a relationship viewpoint and shows this from a tone/mood layout.
In the short story “Do Seek Their Meat From God”, the author, Charles G.D. Roberts comments on the theme of human nature. First, the author shows how humans are compassionate towards others. As the settler was walking home and heard the cries from the boy, rather than ignoring him and continuing home, he felt compassion for the scared child, and stayed back to help. Next, the author shows how people can be prejudice. When the settler heard the boy, he assumed it was his drunk neighbour’s kid, he muttered, “‘I reckon his precious father’s drunk down at ‘the Corners’, and him crying for loneliness!” (page 194). But, in reality, it was his own son, and he was being quick to judge. Finally, the author demonstrates how sometimes humans do things

Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, documents the author's discovery of her own and her father's homosexuality. The book touches upon many themes, including, but not limited to, the following: sexual orientation, family relationships, and suicide. Unlike most autobiographical works, Bechdel uses the comics graphic medium to tell her story. By close-reading or carefully analyzing pages fourteen through seventeen in Fun Home one can get a better understanding of how a Bechdel employs words and graphic devices to render specific events. One can also see how the specific content of the pages thematically connects to the book as a whole. As we will see, this portion of the book echoes the strained relationship between Bruce Bechdel and his family and his attempts to disguise his homosexuality by creating the image of an ideal family, themes which are prevalent throughout the rest of the nook.
There are some people in this world that can truly understand, or try to understand people and their feelings. They can relate to them on some sort of level. Then there's is plenty of people in this world who have no empathy at all. They don’t feel for people or even try to understand. That's exactly why everyone should read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book is about a little girl named Scout and her older brother Jem, who is going through some changes as they grow older in the racist south where their father, a lawyer has a case about a black man raping a white woman. Over the course of the book, both characters grow in great measures. Their father is always teaching them in little ways what’s right/wrong, and what’s good/bad.
It could be from Gay rights to Civil rights, Humans in general face a struggle of being considered an equal by peers and family members. It shares a similar story of how you shouldn’t give up even when you’re discouraged and oppressed. It also shows that he’s fighting for a dream to be known as equal just like the mother.
In the first chapter of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, a graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, the author uses an intriguing combination of pictures and words to draw her readers through the story with many surprising twists and turns similar to the way a carnival fun house lures in curious adventurers . As the author first introduces her father to the story, one would believe him to be a loving and engaging father. However, once Bechdel begins comparing their playful exchange with the “Icarian Games” (pg. 379) and noting his distraction to the game because of his concern with
Everyone has a friend and deserves one. A friendship is to be with someone that trusts and believes in one. Everyone has a friend--except for Freak and Max. To begin, Freak and Max were two kids who have no friends. The reason being is that they both have disabilities. Freak has Morquio Syndrome which made him very small, and Max has Learning Disabilities and “was the size of a giant” which made people never open themselves up to Freak and Max. Those two didn’t really achieve anything until they became friends. In the realistic fiction novel, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick he told a compelling story about Friendship, determination, and imagination. I believe the theme of this novel of the book is if you put your mind into it, you can
Living in a world of discrimination of every kind is unavoidable, but being that people do have a choice they can change. As individuals they can change and become more accepting towards diversity. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee guides the reader through the theme of acceptance. Atticus, Jem, and Scout know and learn the importance of acceptance throughout the novel. All three of them eventually share the same view of acceptance through equality.
Have you ever wondered why people see things differently from other or why they think the way they do? Harper Lee, the author of to Kill a Mocking Bird, once said, “you will never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside his his skin and walk around in it.” I believe what Lee had said is entirely true. People won’t ever fully understand what someone is going through without actually being them. Seeing through other people perspective gives us some understanding of a certain situation and helps us realize all parts of the story. When you change the way you look at thing the things you look at change.
“Am I wrong for saying that I choose another way…Don’t let them control your life. That’s just how I feel. Fight for yours and don’t let them go. Don’t let them compare you, no.” This song by Nico and Vinz means that you should take your own path and if someone is judging you, you shouldn’t let them “control your life.” When Nico sings this he is also saying that you should “fight” or stand up for what you think is right even if no one follows or agrees with you. These two themes about judging others and standing up for what you believe in come up many times in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird and in Jem and Scout’s life. The children learn from these lessons and can use it to understand the world better. Although opponents might say that
...ts set for them. Children are constantly aware of adults’ choices, and they begin to formulate their own understanding of general values at a young age. When adults are hypocritical of their pre-set standards, it sends children into a state of discombobulation. Staying true to one’s values as an example for children will be beneficial to them as they travel along the highway of childhood and come upon the exit necessary to reach the interstate of adulthood.
In reference to Gollnick and Chinn, “Adolescence, approximation ages 13 through 18, is perhaps one of the most challenging times in the life of an individual and the family” (p. 244). Dazed and Confused demonstrates how confused adolescences might behave. In the movie, the plot takes place on the last day of school. Seniors have graduated from their “childlike” days into what they feel is adulthood. They celebrate by taking part in drinking, sex, and drugs. Freshman are trying to find their place in high school, so they take part in the annual initiation ritual, allowing themselves to be humiliated in front of their peers to be accepted. I thought the film did a good job enlightening us on how complex adolescence behavior can be. One of the characters that stand out to me is Pink Floyd. He is the star quarterback and has everything going for him, but he feels like his
In Fun Home: A Family Tragic Comic, Alison Bechdel uses the graphic novel technique of bringing visuals and concise text to her audience to reveal the relationship with her father in a perspective that can not be modified through the readers perspective and interpretation. Bechdel employs this type of writing style to help visualize a better interpretation of how she describes the differences in both her and her fathers’ gender roles throughout the novel. This tactic helps discuss and show how these gender roles were depicted as opposite from one another. But, in this case being opposite from one another made them gain a stronger relationship of understanding and reviling that these differences were actually similarities they also shared.
Through the decades, there have been different types of social issues that affect many people. “The personal is political” was a popular feminist cry originating from civil rights movements of the 1960s, called attention to daily lives in order to see greater social issues on our society. This quote can relate back to many social issues that still occur till this day that many people are opposed of. One of the major social issues that still exist today, for example, is discrimination against colored people. In Javon Johnson’s poem, “Cuz He’s Black,” he discusses how discrimination affects many people, especially little kids because they are growing up fearing people who are supposed to protect us. Johnson effectively uses similes, dialogue
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, takes place in the Land of Oz. It actually takes place forty years before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, and it tells the story of how Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, became so wicked (Fiction Book Review). This book was written in 1995. Maguire wrote this book in the early 1900’s when he was living in London. At this time, the Gulf War was just starting. Maguire was intrigued by the headline in the British Newspaper, the Times of London, that said, “Sadaam Hussein: The New Hitler?” Months later, there was an incident where several young schoolboys kidnapped and killed a toddler. While the British press was paying attention to the crime,
