Historical Event Write-up: “Flowers” After three years, Miley Cyrus made her way back into the music industry with her latest Grammy winning top hit “Flowers”. In this essay I will be diving into the historical context for “Flowers”, a song from her eighth studio album “Endless Summer Vacation”. I will be providing the context that led to the release of “Flowers” and her first Grammy win. First, I will be addressing Cyrus’s upbringing of fame, then I will be looking into her status evolution in the public eye, and finally I will explain what was going on in Cyrus’s life when writing “Flowers”. Before she found her path to becoming an international superstar in 2004, Cyrus was just Miley Stewart in the hit TV show by Disney “Hannah Montanah”. The show catapulted her into stardom, expanding her massive fan base and establishing her as a teen idol. Twelve plus hour workdays kept Cyrus extremely busy as she made her way into the spotlight (Tinoco, 2023). In 2007, her music started off innocently as it had been produced by Disney Channel. Quickly she found herself falling into the pressure of needing to be perfect. Consequently, being a Disney Channel star led her to rebel against her Disney-fied image and find her own independence. Into her adult years, her four-year relationship with Liam Hemsworth had been called off leading to a new era, her “bangerz” era with her single “we can't stop”(Sternlicht, 2024). However, coming to an end to this era was the drop of “malibu” as she realized her music could change as she grew up. Commonly referred to as the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson continues to earn millions of dollars beyond the grave- earning over $700 million in the years since he passed away in 2009. As the pop genre derives from an abbreviation of “popular”, the King of Pop maintained record breaking popularity for extended periods of time. Pop music, is typically short and simple commercially recorded songs oriented towards a youth market; the King of Pop challenged stereotypes and the viewpoints of his audience with songs like “We are the World”, “Man in the Mirror” and many more.

The beginning of Lady Gaga’s career, unbenowst to the majority, dedicated itself soley for fame culture commentary. When Lady Gaga released her widely acclaimed album “The Fame” in August 2008, she sold 12 million copies of an album based off of the whole concept of being in a culture obsessed with becoming the celebrity as the ultimate validation of living. The media, obsessed with Lady Gaga’s whole concept, absorbed her presence in the spotlight and made her into a massive worldwide star. She once told Rolling Stone, “I want people to walk around delusional about how great they can be — and then to fight so hard for it every day that the lie becomes the truth” (Lady Gaga). Her manipulation of the public is possible from the culture revolving around celebrities. Celebration of celebrity culture is perpetuated throughout media outlets and consumed by public masses. In the Empire of Illusion, Chris Hedges discusses celebrity culture and its underlying connections to pseudo-events, which are a form of mass media manipulation through a carefully crafted event. Celebrity culture and pseudo-events are often forces for economic gains through the deception of the public.

To give just a preview of the topics that will be discussed, in this paper I will provide a short biography of Michael Jackson, the onset of his career, a brief description of Pop Music, and his impact and legacy on pop culture and other singers as well. Michael Jackson, the name that the majority of people, including those who do not listen to his music, have heard at least once in their lifetime. He began to love the excitement of being under the spotlight, entertaining the audience with all eyes fixed on him.
