In this tragic love story about two men who struggle to win over one woman’s heart, working together seemed like the only option for both of them to get what they wanted. Cyrano is the most admirable character in this play because of all of his acts of kindness and helpfulness and also with his bravery and loyalty to his friends. Sometimes, fate can be unfair, and the greatest person can end up having the worst things, while the worst person can end up receiving the best things. In Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano is a great man, who is noble and brave, but ends up being very poor and dies sadly. Love is a state of mind that cannot be defined easily but can be experienced by everyone. His love for her is so great that he could sacrifice anything, even his own happiness in order to ensure hers. Cyrano always thought that he is less fortunate to have a nose this big. That’s why when people made fun of him he got very angry but he never lost his charisma and he always made himself look smart. Roxane thinks that Christian is the most handsome boy and most outstanding poet in the world but she doesn’t know that it is Cyrano who is writing the letters to her. Cyrano’s disguised letters have moved her inexpressibly. Christian tells Cyrano he no longer wants Cyrano’s help, and then makes a fool of himself while he tries to speak to her and she doesn’t understand a single word of what he is saying. The plot in both the movie and the book are similar. In both, Cyrano is trying to help Roxanne and Christian fall in love with each other, even though he loves Roxanne. Cyrano writes letters to Roxanne telling her how much he loves her, pretending to be Christian. He loves Roxanne, but feels that he is ugly and could never get her to love him back because of his huge nose.
Superficial passion revolves around outward beauty, but true love is always found in the heart. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand conveys this truth beautifully. This play follows Cyrano in his quest for love from Roxanne, believing she could not love him due to his oversized nose. Little do they know that she does not truly love the handsome Christian, but rather Cyrano, the master of words.
Although the play Hamlet is largely centered around the “tragic hero” Hamlet, it is the minor foil characters that gives us a deeper understanding of the text and a more conscious understanding of the internal struggles experienced by Hamlet. Each of these characters contrasts a specific aspect of Hamlet that would otherwise be overlooked. Horatio consolidates all of the desirable features that Hamlet wants to be into one person. Fortinbras, although in the exact same situation as Hamlet with his father dead and his uncle on the throne, is the complete opposite of Hamlet by choosing action over inaction. Finally, Ophelia personifies Hamlet’s innocence and the death of his innocence after the death of his father. Life as humans is anything but perfect. In the book “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Edmond Rostand conveys the aspects of the human condition through Cyrano’s honor and cowardly behavior. As the play progresses, Cyrano experiences the upbringings and downfalls of being human. Since the beginning of the play, the author suggests that Cyrano is a humble man. Cyrano accepts responsibility for ruining the play, and offers all of his money to the actors to keep them from having to take a loss on the night's theatre performance. The author soon reveals that Cyrano has no money when he is asked to dine and responds with, “I have no money,” which suggests that he is generous. Another one of his many gifts is his wit and unique ability to articulate words. Cyrano, a true musketeer, prizes his honor above all else. Helen Keller once wrote, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.” Beauty usually defines a person’s physical appearance which is what everyone on the outside sees , whereas inner beauty is not as recognized, but is still considered as “true” beauty because it “cannot be seen or even touched.” This corresponds to Cyrano’s physical insecurity versus his soulful inner thoughts. True love and beauty comes straight from the heart which is how Cyrano was able to gain Roxane’s love, but he was never acknowledged for his affectionate deeds. In The play Cyrano de Bergerac, the main character, Cyrano, is a noble idealist who fights against the harsh reality of ordinary life, and creates his own world. On the outside he is a strong man with a hard shell, but inside he is a melancholy poet yearning for love. He feels that the world bases love too much on appearance. He believes that no one will ever love him because of his grotesquely long nose. For this reason Cyrano cuts himself off of true reality and creates a world where love exists without appearance.
Cyrano has unknowingly created a sort of psychological trap in which women are kept on the outside and men are free to roam within. Lacking confidence around women, he is forced to pour his heart out on to letters and is deprived of any kind of physical contact with the opposite gender. Without confidence, a man's attempts at any kind of a relationship with a woman are almost always thwarted because in order for a woman to be attracted to a man, she must first see confidence in him. Since Cyrano has no confidence in his ability with women, he is stuck in a never-ending cycle of rejection and loneliness.

Cyrano de Bergerac does what he pleases and most actually says whatever is on his mind. He speaks through prideful actions, always thinking of how to make himself stand out or to look intelligent. He never backs down from a fight or a confrontation, and this is often where his pride will continuously persuade his sense. Cyrano only grows in pride, and his temper grows shorter, through the play so the characters don't even say the word 'nose' anywhere near him. Cyrano was a good tragic hero that the audience loves who sadly has tragic flaws that cause his demise.

I related more to this version of Cyrano de Bergerac because the settings are familiar. In the original version there is a sword fight at a theater. Cyrano was a man of many talents, he was a great poet, and a remarkable sword fighter, in the quote, “He’s an extraordinary man, isn’t he? The most delightful man under the sun” PG. 18, it conveys how Cyrano is even admired by those around him. However, Cyrano always lived by his idea in self-worth, Cyrano is very intelligent and skilled, but he lacks in self confidence which is revealed in the quote, “My friend, I have bad moments now and then, feeling myself so ugly, all alone….” PG.50. Franco Zeffirelli portrayed a more effective version of the famous to be or not be soliloquy by having it set below in the family mortuary. Having violently rejected Ophelia, Hamlet climbs down the stoned stairs of the medieval castle and into the cellar where all his ancestors’ burial tombs lie, including his father’s. Surrounding himself in tombs and skeletons, he intones the to be or not to be speech in isolation and darkness. Having this particular set design, Zeffirelli enhanced the scene by creating a cold, dark, and suspenseful atmosphere. The family mortuary set design was eerie and melancholic which added realism into the speech as it allowed the audience to really see the manifestation of death that Hamlet contemplated. It also added physical emotion into the soliloquy as the scene contrasted death and Hamlet so closely with all the dead royals in their tombs, showing how deep Hamlet’s thoughts on life and death were rooted in his mind. Therefore, Zeffirelli’s use of the set design helped to create a more intense scene that enriched the soliloquy.
