The definition of a romantic hero is referring to a character that doesn’t follow the established norms, and has been rejected by society. The romantic hero seems to be perfect— better than the average person, but they have a physical flaw. When speaking of a character that fits these descriptions we think of Cyrano De Bergerac. Cyrano is courageous, witty, eloquent, intelligent, and poetic, but his negative point is his nose. Cyrano, because of his nose, he denied himself of love for years, because he was fearful that no one would love him seeing that his nose was so large.

in his pursuit to become an nobleman and represent the kind of man that everyone would want to be. Cyrano is a person of many talents. He is known for being the best swordsman in the city. Known for his great poetic and improv skills, he’s a musician, a philosopher, and a gentleman. After Cyrano challenges a man to duel because of his nose, Cyrano is served by the Orange Girl. The Orange Girl is common girl, a servant, yet Cyrano treats her as an equal, “He kisses the hand she holds out, as he would the hand of a princess” (Act 1). The character De Guiche who is a man of high power even asks Cyrano to join his team, but Cyrano rejects him: “Cyrano: The marshal speak As an authority De Guiche: Your duel yesterday amused my uncle The Cardinal. I might help you there Cyrano: Impossible. My blood curdles to think of altering one comma” (Act 2). He seems to be perfect, but his flaw was his outer appearance.
Cyrano’s insecurities prevent him from getting what he desires most: love. His internal beauty wins over the public, but he fails to forget about his large nose.
In addition, the flaw that makes Cyrano a romantic hero is his nose. Throughout the play, his nose reoccurs as something negative. Cyrano believes that his nose is the reason why he cannot find love, “Me with this nose of mine that marches on Before me by a quarter of an hour! Whom should I love?” (Act 1). He also pushes people away because he believes that he is not good looking. That’s why he challenges the people who mention his nose. His own insecurities get in the way of him getting along with others.
For 15 years, Cyrano has been in love with his cousin Roxane. Cyrano does not confess his love for her because his insecurities of his nose. Cyrano speaks to his friend Le Bret about his failing love life, “Who’m I love?...Think of me- Me, whom the plainest woman would despise- Me, with this nose…” (Act 1). Cyrano’s nose also gets him into trouble. Throughout the play, whenever a person comments on his nose he becomes self-conscious and challenges them to a brawl. With these fights he creates enemies:
“Cyrano: You may go- Or tell me why you are staring at my nose!/The Meddler: No- I-” (Act
1). As Cyrano continues to accuse this man of looking at his nose he begins to put down himself instead, he comes up with every offense the man could have said towards himself, “Does it astonish you?.. Is it long and soft And dangling, like a trunk?” (Act 1). Even though The Meddler did not say anything Cyrano continues to say bad things about his nose: “The Meddler: I never said- Cyrano: Or cooked, like an owl’s beak?” (Act 1). Clearly, Cyrano seems like the perfect character; no one would think he’d ever have flaws. From seeing his external behaviors we’d think that he’s a man full of confidence. From reading the play, we can see all of the great qualities Cyrano has, but we can also tell that his nose is the only flaw he has. His nose is what holds him back from doing many things: falling in love and making friends instead of enemies. This what creates a romantic character.
The plot in both the movie and the book are similar. In both, Cyrano is trying to help Roxanne and Christian fall in love with each other, even though he loves Roxanne. Cyrano writes letters to Roxanne telling her how much he loves her, pretending to be Christian. He loves Roxanne, but feels that he is ugly and could never get her to love him back because of his huge nose.
Superficial passion revolves around outward beauty, but true love is always found in the heart. In Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand conveys this truth beautifully. This play follows Cyrano in his quest for love from Roxanne, believing she could not love him due to his oversized nose. Little do they know that she does not truly love the handsome Christian, but rather Cyrano, the master of words.
“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” (Confucius) Cyrano’s insecurity of his nose effects his relationship with Roxane. In Edmond Rostand’s play Cyrano De Bergerac, Cyrano’s insecure and eloquent self-perception results in Cyrano’s companionship & loving in his relationship with both Christian & Roxane. Cyrano’s level of eloquence helps him combat the insults of his nose. Cyrano is a poetic, witty, & eloquent man who is insecure & has trouble showing his true feelings for Roxane .Cyrano and Christian work together to win Roxane’s heart, and at the end Cyrano allows love to kill him, even after Roxane discovers & reciprocates his feelings.
As the play opens, there is much merrymaking and festivity in preparation for the play. The sheer happiness of all of the colorful characters is transferred to the reader almost instantly. The mood is portrayed very well as being light and bubbly, an overall good feeling. Few words can be more humorous, or more upsetting, than a well thought out and witty phrase. The only skill that matches Cyrano’s skill with a sword, is his skill with his tongue. With a wit unmatched by any poet, Cyrano made enemies wherever he went, simply by out-smarting all who came against him. In the first act of the play, Cyrano crashes a performance of the well-known actor Montfluery. After many insults, Cyrano heaps upon them by saying, “I would never venture out in public with a soiled conscience, a tarnished honor, or scruples grimy and dull. I do not adorn myself with gems and ribbons, like you. Instead, I decorate myself with truth, independence, and a clean soul.”

One of Cyrano’s most significant traits as a friend was his loyalty. He would always look out for friends in their time of need, which makes the audience feel sympathetic towards him. Because Cyrano is such a loyal friend, the audience feels angry with Roxane for manipulating him, and taking advantage of his loyalty. An example of Cyrano’s loyalty was when Ragueneau’s wife was having an affair with a musketeer, Cyrano confronted her, “Make sure you do./I like your husband, and I don’t intend/To see him made a fool of./Is that clear?”(II.iv.115-118). He stood up for his dear friend, and did not want him be made a joke of. I believe this is important because it shows that he is not only loyal to his friend, but also caring and has strong moral principles. The theme of this play is inner beauty and outer beauty. In the beginning of Cyrano de Bergerac, it seems like the theme focuses heavily on outer beauty. As you continue to read on, the play actually puts more emphasis in inner beauty. Symbolism is very important in this play. He pulls off this great look, but once you get t o know him you realize that he is not the most intelligent person. Christian according to Roxane is “proud, brave, and noble.”(II.vi.178) But, Christian says “I’m so stupid, I could die of shame.”(II.x.464) Christian is brave considering he is a part of the army and he does go to war. He is noble in the way that he is willing to give up Roxane for Cyrano since Roxane only loves Christian for his looks. He tells Cyrano to tell Roxane of the plan that they had made because Roxane had told Christian that if he was ugly she would still love him. That meant that she did not just love him for his looks anymore. He is not the brightest considering that he thought he could make Roxane swoon without the help of Cyrano. He tries and fails dramatically, she does not want to talk him so Cyrano has to come to the rescue and fix it all for Christian. Christian is called “handsome”(II.x.464) by Roxane when she is describing him to Cyrano. Also, Cyrano says, “…the boy is handsome, damn him!.” (II.x.459) When he and Christian are alone after Christian was insulting his nose while Cyrano was telling the cadets his story of the fight. Roxane fell for Christian just for his looks, he is handsome and his looks and Roxane’s beauty would go well together if you were just looking at looks. The Cadets were together listening to Cyrano’s fighting story, but every time Cyrano would say something Christian would interrupt and make fun of Cyrano’s nose. Eventually, Cyrano gets annoyed with it and tells all the Cadets to leave but Christian. But, instead of killing Christian he embraces him into a hug and goes on to tell him that he is handsome and basically perfect for Roxane.Christian says that he “loves her so”(I.ii.66) when he is talking to Lingière. Christian De Neuvillette is introduced as an impulsive baron with charming features. Christian can be interpreted as a naïve, and shortsighted character, although within the play, his character bonds between more than just two negative attributes. The most desirable personality traits that a character would acquire are strenuous to preserve. One of these strenuous traits includes courtesy, which readers would target their attention to. The readers’ concentration targets to characters with high qualities that differ from other characters, in this case Christian fits perfectly into the category. After Christian De Neuvillette proves Cyrano De Bergerac that he has fortitude by insulting Cyrano’s extensive nose, Christian hastily apologizes later when Cyrano acknowledged he was the cousin of Roxane. This may be interpreted as an action of remorse, considering Christian did affront the cousin of Roxane; a woman Christian felt adoration towards. The interpretation is partially correct, although stepping into Christian’s point of view, his loyalty focalizes onto Roxane. Christian’s reaction to when he figured Cyrano was Roxane’s cousin, revealed a sudden change in attitude towards Cyrano, creating a much lighter and respectful tone in his speech: “I am so glad to meet you / Believe me...
While reading Cyrano de Bergerac, I found myself often wondering whether or not Cyrano had led a happy life. Actually, I never once wondered that, but that is irrelevant, because Cyrano’s happiness is the focus of this essay. Was he happy? Truth be told, I cannot say for sure. If we look upon his life, it would seem that he was a bit of a martyr, always sacrificing his happiness for the sake of others. This is probably the case, but I do not believe that he led his life with his happiness as any sort of goal. That will be a defining case in my argument. What I really believe is that he simply did not care about his happiness. In that sense, he did not so much sacrifice it, as he annexed and divided it when he saw fit. To a further extent, this apathy towards himself probably came from a low self-worth, almost certainly spawned not from his elephantine nose, but the fair maiden Roxanne. Finally, the nose itself, the very icon of de Bergerac, was probably not the problem that Cyrano believed it to be. All of this, however obscure it may seem, is crucial to the question posed of me now.
Throughout the play, Cyrano exhibits his obstinate and presumptuous personality. He adamantly believes that his way is the only way and he defies any opposing force that comes against him. He refuses to listen to any sound advice from his friends. The most obvious example is when he refuses De Guiche's offer to be his patron. Instead of accepting the advice from his best friend, Le Bret, he has a rousing “No Thank You” tirade in front of the Cadets where he openly refuses to be under De Guiche’s patronage, proclaiming that living under another man's honor is beneath him.
By definition, a tragic hero is a protagonist that due to some tragic flaw loses everything he has. Throughout history, literature has always been filled with main characters possessing some tragic flaw. In Macbeth, Macbeth’s tragic flaw is his enormous ambition to become king. In Hamlet, Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his need for revenge for the death of his father at the hands of his uncle. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh’s tragic flaw is his need to be remembered. In the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, Beowulf also has a tragic flaw, excessive pride and the search for fame, which ultimately leads to his demise.
Unlike the medieval hero, the moral codes for the romantic hero are eccentric; the heroes get to make their own rules. Romantic heroes also do not have to be loyal to a hierarchy but instead are loyal to a certain project. Self knowledge for a romantic hero is valued above physical strength and endurance (Norman).
