The time period of the institution slavery in America is one of America’s terrible time periods. Fear is a large factor in why slavery was able to exist, not only was there fear coming from the slaves but there was also fear from the slave owners. Punishments were the result of the fear produced by the slave owners, in order to produce fear in the slaves. This cycle of fear, leading to punishment, leading to fear is what kept the slavery system going. Both the slaves and the owners had multiple reasons to have be scared of one another. Therefore, for the whites to reduce their distress they used punishments of different kinds to transfer the dread to the slaves. Many people act out of fear, an example is the Germans during World War ll, whether
the germans were for or against the war, they followed orders in fear of being punished. One of the justifications the slave owners used to own slaves was for the economy, in the south plantations needed to be tended, to ship the raw materials to Britain or other countries to be manufactured. The plantation owners then made the excuse that they could not tend to the farm on their own and needed slaves. Eventually, as the number of slaves in America(particularly the south) grew, white colonists feared slave revolts and uprisings. Most plantations were basically runned by the slaves, if the left there would be no one to work on the plantation. Leading to the slave/plantation owners to lose everything they had. As a result, slave owners became harsh to their slaves in order to scare them from revolting or escaping the property, the owners relied heavily on their farm hands and needed to make sure they worked and stayed on the property. Therefore, slaves then feared the slave owners because of the harsh punishments, letting the owner have control over their actions. The cycle of fear is what kept slavery in place, and it wasn’t till one of them stopped fearing the other that something changed.

Between 1800 and 1860 slavery in the American South had become a ‘peculiar institution’ during these times. Although it may have seemed that the worst was over when it came to slavery, it had just begun. The time gap within 1800 and 1860 had slavery at an all time high from what it looks like. As soon as the cotton production had become a long staple trade source it gave more reason for slavery to exist. Varieties of slavery were instituted as well, especially once international slave trading was banned in America after 1808, they had to think of a way to keep it going – which they did. Nonetheless, slavery in the American South had never declined; it may have just come to a halt for a long while, but during this time between 1800 and 1860, it shows it could have been at an all time high.
During the Antebellum Era in the United States, it was constitutionally protected to own slaves as property. Slavery also made up a large sum of the American economy, especially in the Southern states. However, the act of slavery in America was much more than economic stimulation and constitutional interpretations. Slavery was cognitively oppressive and immortal as it dehumanized the white population and enslaved people. In the slave narratives of Harriet Jacobs and Fredrick Douglass, both authors write how their lived experiences embodies the dehumanization of African Americans in both physical and mental acts of violence. Winthrop D. Jordan author of White Over Black: American Attitudes Toward the Negro 1550-1812, expresses two main arguments in explaining why Slavery became an institution. He also focuses attention on the initial discovery of Africans by English. How theories on why Africans had darker complexions and on the peculiarly savage behavior they exhibited. Through out the first two chapters Jordan supports his opinions, with both facts and assumptions. Jordan goes to great length in explaining how the English and early colonialist over centuries stripped the humanity from a people in order to enslave them and justify their actions in doing so. His focus is heavily on attitudes and how those positions worked to create the slave society established in this country.

It was a major year and turning point for slavery because it was made aware that “Africans” were being caught and transported to Jamestown to tend to tobacco crops, indigo crops and many other crops. From the period of Antebellum America up into the present time, many documents and pieces of work have been published regarding the abolition of slavery and slavery in general. Regarding the abolition of slavery, slave narratives were one of the ways to get readers first hand look at accounts of slavery and in turn were a big part of abolitionist movements. In class we have read three of the great slave narratives and there are abolitionist themes that can be traces through all three of them. These themes argued against slavery and were used to persuade their readers to support the abolition of slavery. Although there were many similar themes through out the narratives I will be focusing on just two of the most effective ways that argue for the abolition of slavery: slavery seen as a slow poison, and emotion through extreme cruelty and suffering.
The film “Slavery by another name" is a one and a half hour documentary produced by Catherine Allan and directed by Sam Pollard, and it was first showcased by Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The film is based on Douglas Blackmonbook Slavery by Another Name, and the plot of the film revolves around the history and life of African Americans after Emancipation Proclamation; which was effected by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, for the purpose of ending slavery of African Americans in the U.S. The film reveals very brutal stories of how slavery of African Americans persisted in through forced labor and cruelty; especially in the American south which continued until the beginning of World War II. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, brings to light many of the social injustices that colored men, women, and children all were forced to endure throughout the nineteenth century under Southern slavery laws. Douglass's life-story is presented in a way that creates a compelling argument against the justification of slavery. His argument is reinforced though a variety of anecdotes, many of which detailed strikingly bloody, horrific scenes and inhumane cruelty on the part of the slaveholders. Yet, while Douglas’s narrative describes in vivid detail his experiences of life as a slave, what Douglass intends for his readers to grasp after reading his narrative is something much more profound. Aside from all the physical burdens of slavery that he faced on a daily basis, it was the psychological effects that caused him the greatest amount of detriment during his twenty-year enslavement. In the same regard, Douglass is able to profess that it was not only the slaves who incurred the damaging effects of slavery, but also the slaveholders. Slavery, in essence, is a destructive force that collectively corrupts the minds of slaveholders and weakens slaves’ intellects.

Slavery in the eighteenth century was worst for African Americans. Observers of slaves suggested that slave characteristics like: clumsiness, untidiness, littleness, destructiveness, and inability to learn the white people were “better.” Despite white society's belief that slaves were nothing more than laborers when in fact they were a part of an elaborate and well defined social structure that gave them identity and sustained them in their silent protest.
Plantation owners in the south hunted for, captured, and enslaved African Americans to do a wide variety of work at the plantations. Even though these slaves would get regularly whipped for arbitrary reasons, the owners and masters believed that it was in the best interest of the slaves to be in slavery. A slave masters wife started teaching a slave by the name of Fredrick Douglass how to read because she believed he would not have gotten the chance to learn if he was not in slavery. Slave masters also knew the slaves had a better live because they had food to eat. They claimed that if the slaves had not been captured or born of a slave family, they would not have had the adequate amount of food to survive. Douglass refutes that humanitarian views towards slavery are wrong by giving his insight on how he was dehumanized by slavery in the following ways: his ability to learn basic life skills, how to care and have a voice for himself and lastly, the gift of happiness.
Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work. Slavery was cruelty at its best. Slavery is described as long work days, a lack of respect for a human being, and the inability for a man or a woman to have gainful employment. The slaves were victimized the most for obvious reasons. Next on the list would be the families of both the slave and slave owners. At the bottom of the list would be the slave owners. Slavery does in fact victimize slaves, slave owner and their families by repeating the same cycle every generation.
The term slave is defined as a person held in servitude as the chattel of another, or one that is completely passive to a dominating influence. The most well known cases of slavery occurred during the settling of the United States of America. From 1619 until July 1st 1928 slavery was allowed within our country. Slavery abolitionists attempted to end slavery, which at some point; they were successful at doing so. This paper will take the reader a lot of different directions, it will look at slavery in a legal aspect along the lines of the constitution and the thirteenth amendment, and it will also discuss how abolitionists tried to end slavery. This paper will also discuss how slaves were being taken away from their families and how their lives were affected after.
Slavery has been a part of human practices for centuries and dates back to the world’s ancient civilizations. In order for us to recognize modern day slavery we must take a look and understand slavery in the American south before the 1860’s, also known as antebellum slavery.
