Cyber bullying has become an epidemic among today’s youth and a rising concern across the globe. Cyberbullying is the role of electronic communication that depicts discriminating, manipulative, hateful, or embarrassing information in regards to another human being. The design is to intimate, demean, control, or humiliate the victim. With the massive use of electronic function in today’s age, it has dramatically increased the number of victims, spectators and even its perpetrators. Pamela Engel states, “American school systems estimate that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students” and “Six out of 10 teenagers say they witness bullying in school at least once a day”. Potential effects range from an individual’s inability to blend into society causing them to have difficulty adapting to “The Real World “, or an alarming increase in suicide rate among today’s youth because of the isolation or lack of external resources available. Students who are bullied begin struggling academically leading to a decreased interest and potential increase in the retention rate at schools. This results in today’s affected youth’s disconnection from school and negatively produces low academic achievement or outcome. The detrimental impact this has on their current and even future education leads the victims struggling to adapt to the lifestyle or outside world of adulthood. The victim also lacks the ability to socially interact among its peers which leads to limited quality or poor quality friendships at school which may only further create loneliness and further isolation. Students in some cases even drop out of school because the severity of the situation. Kids that are bullied tend to suffer from anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Due to bullying about 14 percent of kids have attempted suicide and 7 percent have succeeded. Suicide isn 't the only violence that comes from bullying, school shootings are closely connected to bullying. Educators, parents and parental figures or guardians need to reinforce the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you”. Opening up the channel of communication and allowing our youngsters to sustain a safe harbor in which they can confide their experiences and seek help if necessary is essential. Our youth must feel comfortable to openly share or express their feelings and an active role of engagement of support from educators, parents, parental figures or guardians is necessary in this society to counteract the devastating effects of bullying and find a productive solution. School’s implementation of educating and monitoring are school systems is important. The use of non-bullying services, groups or safe havens, along with the enforcement of a zero tolerance policy have allowed our youth the safety and security within the walls of school. Safe zones or also known as safe havens are places within the school campus that people can go to escape hostile environments. Schools have also set up kids with the ability to have more of an opportunity to reach out to a counselor to let the kids have an outlet to express their problems with bullies and find a solution.
