Cyberbullying is Added to the Dictionary
Should cyberbullying be added to the dictionary? The twelfth edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary is adding over 400 new words to keep the tradition of adding new words and staying up to date with the world. Many of these words are related to the internet/social media. Cyberbullying will make a great addition to the dictionary because cyberbullying is a problem in today’s society, people should be informed on what it truly means, and the dictionary is only good if it stays up to date with people.

The first reason why people can learn from cyberbullying when it is added is because not a lot of people talk to adults about it. Less than 1 in 5 cyberbullying incidents are reported to law enforcement (Cyber Bullying Statistics). If people understand what cyberbullying is, then they might not be as afraid to tell someone about it and it can be fixed. Another reason how people can learn more about cyberbullying is that they can learn how to prevent it. People can start a club, build a campaign, or host an event to bring awareness to cyberbullying (New Words: Retweet, Cyberbullying, and Sexting Officially Enter the OED). If people create these campaigns/clubs, then other people can learn from them and understand how to deal with cyberbullying. The final reason why people can learn from cyberbullying is that they will take it more seriously. Teens try to say that someone is just teasing them instead of truly bullying them. If people learn more about cyberbullying, then they will learn that it’s more than just
