Social media is everywhere and it is a huge part of a young adult’s and adolescent’s life. It’s where they communicate with friends, plan trips, and find the hottest new trends. By using cites like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram can communicate with people across the country and around the world and view what other people are doing. While social media has many great qualities it also has its negative qualities. One of the major negative qualities is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying causes depression, alcohol abuse, and it can also lead to suicide due to the traumatic experiences it can have on its victims. Being cyberbullied leads to alcohol abuse because the victims don’t know how else to cope with the constant torment and the pain it brings with it so the victims use alcohol to try to numb the pain the torment and abuse causes. When people become depressed they often turn to alcohol to ease the pain they are going through but because alcohol is a depressant, it often makes their depression much worse than what it originally was. Dr. Selkie and her associates found that young adults who have been cyberbullied are more likely to have drinking problems than those who have not been cyberbullied (Selkie et al.). The article “The Impact Of Cyberbullying On Substance Use And Mental Health In A Multiethnic Sample” backs Dr. Selkie’s findings by stating that “cyberbullying victimization increased the likelihood of substance use, with binge drinking and marijuana use both approximately 2.5 times more likely to occur” (Goebert et al.). When alcohol makes the victim’s depression worse, it makes them feel as if they need to drink more to get to the emotional state they want to be in causing an alcohol addiction.
