When I am asked to look back at my education, I come to realize that my generation is participating in a changing segment in the history of education. Starting school from pen and paper, my generation has gone through the period when education was about static textbooks and handwritten papers but we are now in the movement toward a new cyber age. We have come from a history where religious and ethnic culture played a major influence in education but now our advancing technologies shift the major contributors to computers and electronic media. In this shift, there have been techniques in education that work, however not all of them have succeeded.
At the start of our lives, our parents decided where our education would begin. The type of institution we attended was out of our control: whether it was Jewish or Catholic school, or secular public school, our parents decided how we would start our education based on their own religious beliefs. Looking at our early institutions, we see how important religion was in our early education. Parent’s fell back on their faith of religion for the future of their children. In retrospect however it is questionable how much this push into a religious environment affected our religious beliefs now. Some of us have been positively pulled into religion while others have been repulsed by it.
Despite what type of institution we attended, the methods in educating students have constantly been improving. In middle school, I recall my teacher telling my class that our generation is learning faster and more than she herself learned at our age. In the transition from our old styles of learning to our developing cyber network of education, there have been both positive and negative techniques in education that work. There has been a huge increase in the efficiency of education through developing technologies and we are able to communicate with each other faster than ever before. However, though we have our vast amounts of information, our ability to assimilate the information is still most efficient through inquiry and one-on-one training. The personal interactions between students and teachers promote the best learning.
In earlier times, the acquisition and spreading of knowledge was not used to improve society. Instead it was used to have control and to exclude certain groups. As one could imagine, there needed to be a change in the way that the education system was set up. In her essay, “Project Classroom Makeover”, Cathy Davidson discusses how the “one size fits all” model of learning hinders students from learning in a new and modernized way. She suggests the notion that using technology to teach and learn can be effective in many ways. Davidson shows that using technology presents the opportunity for a traditional classroom to become more inclusive and creative. The “democratization of knowledge” is the improvement and modernization of how information is taught and learned. Having a modernized and advanced learning system is a vital point for students because they gain insight and experience with what is considered a society dominated by advanced technology. Education remains a cornerstone for society as it has for decades. Technology advances, the economy fluctuates, and politics change, but education remains, not only important but imperative for personal and social growth. Yet, as important as it is touted to be, the quality and purpose of learning is often lost in the assembly-line, manufactured process of education that exists today.
Scoot M. Myers conducted a research beginning in 1980 about the procedures of religiosity inheritance in families. He interviewed 471 parents in 1980 and their adult offspring in 1992 addressed the effects of childhood, parental, and family influences on the religiosity of adult offspring, factors that conditioned the ability of parents to transmit their religiosity, and how recent experiences of adult offspring modify earlier family influences on religiosity. According to the results, there were three variables that influence the impact of religion on adult offspring. Within these three variables were parental religiosity, quality of the family relationship, and traditional family structure. Many studies found the research on the effect of parents’ religiosity on the religiosity of their offspring to have inconsistent results. Researchers have found that parental influence is a high impact for church attendance in adolescence but as their child ages, the impact decreases. Studies have also found that parental influence on religion heavily depends on the religion in which the parent practices. The accumulation of religious capital during childhood is heavily depended upon for transmission of parent’s religion to their offspring as well. Lastly, the events, experiences, and traditions within the family is a major factor that contributes to the influence of religion on adult offspring.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
The discipline, commitment, and responsibility standards that are required for an exceptional learning experience in school systems today are very consistent with those necessary fifty years ago. For example, the tools an educator were provided then were utilized to the best of his or her ability, which can easily be comparable with the circumstances of today’s uprising culture of computers.
Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. In today’s society, gaining a high level of education is almost always mandatory for many jobs. There are many changes being done to the education system along with new items and ways of teaching in the classroom. Although many believe students are getting a true and valuable education, many students would argue that America’s education system is profoundly lacking.
Initially, a child is shaped by his family and if the parents are religious, they will transfer their beliefs to their offspring. As a result, the child will have a basis or a reference on which practices are right or wrong because they are conscious that there is a Supreme Being observing all of his deeds. Hence, there would be polarizing relationships and behaviors between the parent-child of religious and non-religious groups. Through a study conducted by Joseph Fichter, he found that "The religious family provides a happier childhood, makes the child more self-confident, offers broader social opportunities, is more concerned about education, exhibits a more active paternal role, and is more alert to the child 's behavior" (25). For instance, both my parent are very religious. Ever since I was a child, they have induced a sense of religious responsibility into my way of life. In addition, the private institution I attended in the Philippines is a Roman Catholic oriented school. The traditional education environment is starting to implement new ways to teach students with the rapid development of technology. One strategy is the use of the internet to communicate, listen, and share ideas among students and professors alike; specifically the use of the internet realm in wikis, blogs, and podcasts. Blogs are either a website in itself or a part of a website where something like an interactive journal is being used; a person can write about anything they wish, link or show images, and decide whether other people can comment on the blog entry. Wikis are websites or webpages dedicated to providing information about a topic and can be edited by either the members of that site. Podcasts are digital files in the form of audio, video, or both that can be downloaded online onto computers, MP3 players, certain phones, and many more devices. Wikis, blogs, and podcasts could positively alter the educational format of lectures for students.

As time goes by, advances in technology will provide more and more avenues for learning by way of the computer. The Internet has opened the doors of the world and unleashed limitless possibilities in research and education. It may be only a matter of time when the classroom is brought online to all children and attending a school classroom outside the home is a thing of the past. Looking back over the last 20 years, I never would have imagined that computers would come this far and impact our lives so much. Just imagine where they will be 20 years from now.
