Cultural Homogeneity: The Key to Success
A comparison between modern Western countries and Japan emphasizes a large discrepancy in beliefs regarding cultural growth in the separate parts of the world (Leonardson, 2004). According to many scholars and much research done on Japan the culture is the perfect example of what cultural homogeneity means as a whole. The cultural homogeneity affects the Japanese youth in how they grow, develop, affect their communities, and live their future lives in the community; this also plays a role in forcing out crime in the country. It also affects the procedures of the police force when interacting with citizens and planning new procedures that require the help and cooperation of Japanese citizens. The cultural

Much of the education done in Japanese schools teach high self-control and self-regulation by expecting students to regulate themselves and take responsibility for their actions from a very young age. These tactics are highly important in order to prevent crime considering that the biggest predictor to crime and crime analogous behaviours is the low self-control found in many other countries (Vazsonyi, 2004). This contrasts deeply with Japanese ideals which throughout history has been focussed on restraint and reserve something that is still a strong ideal in Japanese culture. In many western countries people do commit the same offence more than once, something that the Japanese have focussed on. According to Johnson, “Japanese criminal justice works to control crime and maintain order, primarily by preventing recidivism through the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.” (Johnson, 2002). By rehabilitating the Japanese keep their crime rates low by making sure the same offence will not be committed twice. Being taught to conform from such a young age also has a strong effect on the average Japanese citizen in court. The idea that you have to fit a certain mindset resonates deeply with even those that don’t conform completely, because Japan emphasizes norms on confession, repentance, and absolution there is a result of a remarkable spiral of success in court (Johnson, 2002). Having been raised on those norms the average Japanese citizen is pressured by the expectation to conform that has been ingrained since childhood and tends to confess and repent their crimes as is the norm. Many Japanese citizens who do commit crime will openly admit to their crimes when faced with the judicial system. This results in a system that focuses more on precisely and accurately discovering the facts and clarifying the truth
Culture: our internalized beliefs, values, and behaviors we learn to function as a member in society. Culture is everything we pick up on as we grow up, all the little things we never even notice that we do. It can be as apparent as the type of clothing you wear or as subtle as how you interact with others. There are many cultural differences between the United States and other societies around the world. Defined, society is a group of people with the same learned behavior, or culture. Every country, city, and even neighborhoods can have their own traditions and culture that is entirely different from one other. This being said, generally, after being consistently exposed to certain traditions, people find it very difficult to adapt to another tradition or culture. This reluctance to easily adjust to different cultures, and to not judge them negatively, can potentially create vast barriers between people of different cultures. Quite often, people refuse to accept other’s cultural views, because they are so different. In this paper, I will be comparing the educational systems in Japan and the United States, including the importance of education, expectations of students, and xxxxxx .
There are fundamental differences between Eastern and Western cultures and the meeting of these cultures has had several effects, both in Asia and here in the US. Overseas, you can see the juxtaposition of American pop culture on the older modes of Asian thought and society. Here, New Age religions find new excuses in Asian religions and philosophies and Anime is appears regularly on Saturday morning cartoons. Often, this juxtaposition becomes turbulent as the younger generations are caught between two seemingly opposing cultures. As a result, crime rates rise with the integration of Western ideals and culture into Asian society. This is true here in America too as the first generation of Asian-Americans are born and brought up by Asian parents, with Asian thinking, in American society and culture. This conflict manifests itself in our history as a nation as well as in modern universities and businesses.
We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. There is a large percentage of students that have dropped out due to the lack of having a connection with the curriculum. It is frustrating that we are lacking progress in our schools to help these children connect when studies show that each cultural group will soon be equal in numbers. We need to form a better
Bias in simple words means a person’s likelihood to favor one over another. Bias can be conscious and non-conscious. It can also be positive or negative (Ryan & Saha, 2011). I believe that I am biased about how the younger generation perceive things, their beliefs and values compared to the older generation. Thus, whenever I see there is a conflict between older and younger generation, I tend to blame it as generation gap and overlook my biasedness.
In today’s society, it is acknowledgeable to assert that the concepts of race and ethnicity have changed enormously across different countries, cultures, eras, and customs. Even more, they have become less connected and tied with ancestral and familial ties but rather more concerned with superficial physical characteristics. Moreover, a great deal can be discussed the relationship between ethnicity and race. Both race and ethnicity are useful and counterproductive in their ways. To begin, the concept of race is, and its ideas are vital to society because it allows those contemporary nationalist movements which include, racist actions; to become more familiar to members of society. Secondly, it has helped to shape and redefine the meaning of
The modern education system in America is building up a nation of racist within our children. Educations promotion of cultural diversity and awareness is actually creating a segregated, inconsiderate, racist culture that prides itself on being racially and ethnically diverse. This emphasis on cultural awareness is built on the idea that the only way for America to reach true diversity is if Americans understand what makes other nations and cultures different. By definition however, cultural awareness is the understanding of the differences between oneself and the people from other countries/backgrounds focusing on the difference in attitude and values. What modern education and culture promotes in cultural awareness stays from this definition
My first core value is autonomy and independence, and it is important to me because I want some freedom to decide how and when to do my job. Having autonomy will allow me to implement some of my own ideas into my work, which will increase my dedication toward the job. I also need to believe that I am the source of my actions, rather than a manager above me in order to be satisfied with my job. I have always been around and interacted with a diverse group of people throughout my education and in my community. Therefore, I want to collaborate with a diverse group of people in my workplace as well. I believe having people similar and different from me in my workplace would make me more comfortable and at ease with my job because I would be more
The Japanese mind is very pragmatic. They emphasize on immediate experience as opposed to the westernized analytical thinking. We see this through the character of Ryuji when he proposed to Fusako as he told her very bluntly without giving extra thought. We also see this through Noboru as he reacts to the actions of Ryuji very impulsively through his charges. We also establish that the Japanese are very introverted which is depicted through the characters of Ryuji, Noboru and Fusako as they keep very isolated and to themselves.
Race and ethnicity are two terms that are constantly used in today’s society. Understanding these terms can help people to recognize that color of skin or color of hair does not define a person. These terms connect with history, social interaction, and the overall make up of a person. However America is constantly obsessed with labeling people by the way that they look or the way that they act. America seems to encourage the terms race and ethnicity and continue to divide people into categories. It is interesting to comprehend these terms because they are not going to disappear any time soon. Race and ethnicity are apart of America’s history and will be a part of the future.
Japan, known as Nippon to its natives, is known for its exotic and captivating culture. Tokyo, its highest metropolitan area alone, is a sight to see. That is not what will be discussed in this essay though. Modeled after the European Civil law, but highly influenced by American legal traditions, Japan’s Criminal Justice System is intriguing to read about. Puzzled by the American influence? Japan’s defeat in World War II brought major change to the country, resulting in a Constitution much similar to the U.S. with three branches of government.
The Japanese culture has allowed for very little diversity. This started very early in their history. The social controls used to eliminate diversity are the family, the power of gender, the poor treatment of minority groups, the corporate Japanese mentality, and the respect required by people in authority. However, due to globalization and the shrinking of the world, Japanese society is starting to make the change to diversity. The individualistic mentality shared by the new technology driven younger generation is putting pressure on the old Japanese status quo. The transformation is happening very slow, but as the population ages and the old conservatives are being replaced by the new liberals, the old way of thinking is also being replaced by the new.
When it comes to anthropological theories, it is hard to prove or disprove them because everyone has different experiences in their lives within their different cultures that contribute to their opinion on that theory. I believe this is true with the theory of cultural relativism. My experiences within my own culture and the beliefs of my culture have led me to both agree and disagree with different aspects, or lack thereof, of cultural relativism. I believe there exists a duality within the theory of cultural relativism, a duality that I am familiar with and that has become a significant part of my culture. I am from the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The “Twin Cities” refers to Minneapolis and St. Paul. Only divided by a river (or in some cases, just a street), these cities are of equal, yet different importance in Minnesota culture. My experiences spending time in the two cities have led me to live in duel cultures. While many people live in a duality of cultures through their ethnicity, I identify with duel cultures based on geography. My experiences in both Minneapolis and St. Paul contribute to my ambivalence regarding cultural relativism. In Anthropology, there is a gray area when it comes to generalizing about cultures, because we all come from different ones. The idea of duality is a familiar one with which I can apply to my own life and my own culture, as well as to the well-known anthropological theory that tries to find an answer to the question of what culture is.
Nowadays, with the booming of overwhelming globalization, cultural diversity has been a burning topic, which is discussed frequently among the public. Many people argue that practices and beliefs in other cultures that are against ethics and human rights, such as cannibalism in Wari’, clitoridectomy in Africa and the Middle East, or anal sex in Marind-anim are wrong and should be abandoned, or even abolished. However, there is no accurate definition related to the judgment of cultures. That is, western culture is not superior to others’, though some of the tribes have controversial and ethical issues. What is more, every culture deserves our objective respect, because of the characteristics of culture, cultural rights and cultural relativism.
Cultural Appropriation versus Multiculturalism In today's society, there are many different cultures that individuals identify with. Culture is very important to many people and is something that helps define who we are. When different cultures are respected and appreciated, it is a beautiful thing, it can bring individuals in society closer to one another. Ideally, this understanding of one another’s cultures can lead to multiculturalism.
In the future, the world will only become more diverse. People should learn to appreciate it by acknowledging the differences around them. Sometimes people are scared that “recognizing differences will divide people from each other. However, learning about cultural differences can actually bring people closer together” ( “Section 1”). It would be better if people became closer together instead of growing apart because of discrimination and other mistreatment. Building relationships with different cultures should be a goal of everyone and even nations as a whole. Each group has different strengths that can benefit the the community altogether. Since the world will definitely become more diverse, it is important to be informed about cultural groups so you can become more marketable and succeed in a diverse world.
