The difference in disease and death prevalence on Earth stem from environmental, political, economic and social structures within the population. Within the Canadian context, whites have always been at the top, blacks at the bottom and other groups in between. Therefore the construct of racism perpetuates racial inequalities in health. The lived experience of race and racism ultimately promote or constrain the opportunities of health. There is evidence that indicates racial differences in morbidity and mortality are tied to socioeconomic status (SES). SES is a measurement of a number of attributes that define an individual’s or group’s social standing within a community. These attributes include education, income and occupation. It has been statistically observed that there is a positive correlation between SES and the level of health enjoyed by individuals and groups. In these instances people have little choice in terms of where they live and work. For example: “Africville was a black settlement in the north end of Halifax, Nova Scotia, where blacks became a poorly educated, economically marginalized, socially excluded subculture and where governments felt no obligation to respect them. Africville was home to a waste disposal site and in 1950’s the city council of Halifax moved the dump to Africville because it was too much of a health menace to locate anywhere else” (Germov, Hornosty, 2012, pp 159).
