Since 1991, Somalia has been fighting a civil war (11). Poverty, war zones, collapse of government and death fills Somalia and their people every day. The Somali people realized they needed to flee in order to survive and thrive. In 1992, American started giving out refugee visas and the United States started to flood with refugees. An estimated 1.1 million people have left the county with 150,000 in the United States and the highest population in Minnesota and the majority of them congregating to the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis and St. Paul) (10). The appeal to Minnesota for East Africans may seem bizarre due to the radical climate difference, but most recognized the liberal state as offering better education, work force and communities.
Civil War is another shared similarity between both Somalia and the United States. In 1991, following the overthrow of the dictator, Siad Barre, Somalia descended into anarchy. With no government presence to maintain some type of order, clan-based warlords began competing with each other, thus beginning civil unjust. While northern parts of Somalia, as well as the self-declared “Republic of Somaliland,” have remained somewhat peaceful, internal fighting flares up with little to no warning. Since 1991, it is estimated that 350, 000 to 1,000,000 Somalia’s have died due to the lack...
Ever since the civil war in 1991, when the government collapsed, Somalia has been in a state of civil war and anarchy (“Somalian Government”). Somalia is one of the countries in the world with the least diversity among the people. 98.8% of the population is made up of ethnic Somalis (Kraus). Other minority groups include Arabs, Indians, Italians, and Pakistanis. Most Somalis are nomadic or semi-nomadic herders of livestock.

Legends are traditional tales handed down from earlier times and believed to have a historical basis. Myths are ancient stories dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes. Fairy Tales are fantasy tales with legendary being and creators.
In order to understand the full scope of genocide in Somalia and how it will affect other countries, we must understand their culture. This way you can determine if any outside assistance, such as the United States giving aid, would be accepted or unwanted. Cultural knowledge can also give outside countries insight to “how” and “when” relationships can` be established.
Social Norms in America They hold us together as a culture, while separating us as unique individuals at the same time. Folkways, which are based more on custom and etiquette, are the most broken of all norms. This can be explained because in the worst case scenario our only reprimand may be someone staring or talking about us. Mores, while a little more serious than folkways, still don’t have a very serious punishment, just maybe a little more than weird looks, double takes and bad mouthing.
At that time in the early 1990’s, the U.S. was the only superpower country left in the world. The Soviet Union collapsed after the Cold War and the left the U.S. at the top. With the U.S. being the only superpower left, it meant that they were the only ones who could try to keep peace between other countries and hopefully end violence in the world. At the time, Somalia was a complete disaster and still is to this day. They have no structural government and warlords rule parts of the country.
Today, there are over 65 million refugees in the world. That means that one in every 113 people in the world is a refugee. To many, this number may seem extremely alarming. Many refugees struggle to find a place to resettle. America, along with other developed countries, has often been considered dreamland for these displaced people, making many wanting to get out of their war-torn houses and camps. Refugees immigrating to America have been displaced from their original homes, face frustrating immigration policies, and have difficulties starting a new life in a new land.

In this essay, I have decided to evaluate a scene from the Disney movie, Tarzan, by using the communication tool, Relevance of Culture. In this particular movie, there is a scene where Tarzan and Jane meet for the first time and Jane is trying to talk to Tarzan. We will discuss the Demographic Changes and the Sensitivity to Culture. This scene can be viewed at this link, http://youtu.be/YnYNlzsESD8.
Northerners and Southerners are typically known for their differences and stereotypes, but it’s their similarities that bring them together to make up the USA. They have been stereotyping one another since way back in the early 1800’s; in fact, they have literally been through a war against one another. However, times have changed, but a majority of these stereotypes still exist today and probably always will. Of course, the North and the South make up the majority of the United States, but ever since April 12, 1861, there has been an imaginary line that separate the two. That line is known as the Mason Dixon Line. Even though the Civil War ended 150 years ago, it still seems like both sides never got entirely rid of the animosity they felt
Cultures are a complicated characteristic to understand. Living in the United States all of my life I never truly understood other cultures. When I would see people from other cultures come into my work or see them at school I thought they were bizarre. Last summer I went overseas to England, Ireland, and Wales. There I observed that the customs overseas are very different. One facet I noticed was their alcohol consumption. In the United States the law says you have to be twenty one or older to consume alcohol. In Europe the legal drinking age is suppose to be eighteen, but I found that as long as you have money and can see over the bar you are able to purchase alcohol. I assumed that since they are able to drink sooner, they would have more alcoholics then the United States, but this is not the case. Under serious thought I came to the conclusion that since it is their culture to be able to drink at younger ages they learn to not abuse it. After visiting Europe and seeing the differences between our cultures and theirs, I decided I wanted to lea...

Currently, the largest cause of refugees is the Syrian civil war, which has displaced over 2.1 million people. As a country of relative wealth, the United States should be able to provide refuge for many refugees, as well as provide monetary support to the refugees that they are not able to receive. Countries surrounding Syria, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq have taken in the vast majority of Syrian refugees. In some countries, such as Lebanon, Syrian refugees make up over a quarter of the population. This causes extreme economic strain on a country, and can greatly increase the amount of poverty that is seen there.
Both America and Britain are countries with old histories and traditions, so it’s understandable to say that they have developed some very different culture practices. However, the history of America and Britain is intertwined which is why a lot of similarities also occur.
