A cultural aspect that is important in many different cultures all around the globe is the choosing of a martial spouse for a wedding. There are many similarities and differences between the choosing of a prospective spouse in the culture of Romeo and Juliet and the Hindu culture. This knowledge of the cultures can be further applied to my own life and it can be applied to my understanding of the play. First of all, I am now able to understand all the stories that I hear throughout my family about the weddings that have occurred. Furthermore, I am able to understand why some people find it difficult to find the right spouse for their kid because it has to be of the same caste. Also, this knowledge has affected my understanding of Romeo and Juliet because I am able to see why Juliet couldn’t marry Romeo in public, of course the feud is a reason, but since parents had the major hand in selecting the spouse, Juliet had to disobey her parents. Furthermore, divorces were not common during that time, so I can see why Juliet wanted to pretend to be dead to avoid her marriage with Paris. Now, because of this knowledge, I am able to comprehend how the cultural aspects of that time affected the plot of the play. Finally, all of this new knowledge can be tied back to the overall storyline and the whole play of Romeo and Juliet. This knowledge has led me to see that the culture of any time affects what happens within the life of someone, especially when talking about said person’s culture.
