The stereotype that hispanics are the same is false because they differ in many more ways than they are similar. This stereotype of latinos ignores the different ethnicities within the hispanic community, their minor similarities presume people to believe they are what they’re not, there are many differences between latinos such as the Mexican and Puerto Rican origins (nationality). Although there are similarities between hispanics, they are very different culture wise.
In the hispanic community there are many different ethnicities such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba. These ethnicities are similar in ways and are different in others. People tend to get the difference between Mexicans and the other ethnicities such as Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Cubans. Some of these ethnicities are from a country, territory, and islands. After the war in 1898 the United States claimed Puerto Rico along other Spanish colonies. Anyone born in Puerto Rico is a United States citizen by law and is allowed to freely enter the United States when needed. Puerto Rico is very different from the other ethnicities like Mexico. As mentioned before Puerto Ricans are free to leave Puerto Rico to visit and live in the United States while people who are born in Mexico and live there have to have their legal documents or they will be deported. Puerto Ricans are very different from Mexicans not just the way they can enter the U.S. Puerto Rico and Mexico are different culture wise. Their food contains of Bacalaitos, Mofongo, Empanadillas, Tostones, and Chicken with white rice and beans. The music they listen to is Salsa, Reggaeton, and Bachata. When you think of Hispanics, the first thing that comes to mind is, obviously a group of men mowing your lawn or an uneducated single mom with five young kids. Most people think that we, Hispanics, do not know how to speak English at all or are illegally in the United States. All Hispanics have been put into the category of the stereotypical Hispanic by Americans. We are all viewed falsely the same way uneducated, illegal, and all Mexican.
Race was never an issue, but when looking at class sometimes rumors or stereotypes would be given. One of the largest intersection between Latinos is race or identity. For example, Amilcar Ramirez was Latino but looked black. Many Latino children have skin ranging from white to black and all dealt with these problems. Ramirez however faced opposition form Hispanics and African Americans because both would say he is not ‘their kind’ (Garcia, Kindle). Identity is still a large thing for Latino’s because many today are not just purely one heritage. This is still a problem when describing that someone is Mexican and Puerto Rican. The island belonged to but was not a part of the United States, and as a result Puerto Ricans held no citizenship. They simply lingered like citizens of nowhere. It was not until the Jones Act of 1917 that Puerto Ricans were granted statutory citizenship, which was not equivalent to constitutional citizenship. Not granted full American citizenship by the United States, Puerto Ricans were, on the other hand, granted the right to be drafted into the armed forces during WWI, and also to be recruited as cheap labor for the defense industry during the time of war. Such inequality was not the only thing early Puerto Rican migrants experienced on the island.

There are many different cultures in todays society, however some parts are alike while other parts are more diverse. American culture versus Hispanic culture has some similarities and differences. Whether its food, religion, language, politics, marriages, sports, family, hobbies, or technology; Americans share some of the same things as Hispanics.
When someone say’s “hispanic,” what definition comes to mind? Hispanics are not one nationality, nor one culture. Instead, Hispanics are greatly diverse people. Our language and cultural origins are Spanish and Latin American, regardless of race and color. Hispanics can be European, Indian, or of African descent, or any combination of the three. The culture could be linked to Mexico, the Caribbean countries, Central America, South America and Spain. Hispanics were once considered a rarity in the United States, now we are found throughout the country.
Latinos who were raised in the United States of America have a dual identity. They were influenced by both their parents' ancestry and culture in addition to the American culture in which they live. Growing up in between two very different cultures creates a great problem, because they cannot identify completely with either culture and are also caught between the Spanish and English languages. Further more they struggle to connect with their roots. The duality in Latino identity and their search for their own personal identity is strongly represented in their writing. The following is a quote that expresses this idea in the words of Lucha Corpi, a Latina writer: "We Chicanos are like the abandoned children of divorced cultures. We are forever longing to be loved by an absent neglectful parent - Mexico - and also to be truly accepted by the other parent - the United States. We want bicultural harmony. We need it to survive. We struggle to achieve it. That struggle keeps us alive" ( Griwold ).
Language is an important value for the nationalistic identity of a nation. Hispanic culture is the way of life of people from Latin America and Spain, and their main identifying factor is the fact that they speak Spanish as their main language. Latinos have struggled to discover their place inside of a white America for too many years. Past stereotypes and across racism they have fought to belong. Still America is unwilling to open her arms to them. Instead she demands assimilation. With her pot full of stew she asks, "What flavor will you add to this brew?" Some question, some rebel, and others climb in. I argue that it is not the Latino who willingly agreed to partake in this stew. It is America who forced her ideals upon them through mass media and stale history. However her effort has failed, for they have refused to melt.
The first item is the language. Not very Hispanic speaks English. This is due to their parents not teaching or wanting them to talk Spanish. Some people prefer to communicate in a native language around family members while some speak Spanish accurately and other don’t! The strong Spanish influence did not allow us to fully assimilated within the culture that the US shared with us. When you take a domestic flight from any state of the US to Puerto Rico, as soon as you arrive at our main airport in the capital city of San Juan, you can already feel the sudden shift of culture. Hispanic group are well known in the workforce, politics, education, social economic and religion. The Spanish culture influences a variety of areas such as music, food, language. Most languages are rooted in Latin. It is always good to learn about other cultures if we expect the same consideration when we visit other countries. Differences are what make life interesting. Majority of the United States is built on immigration, which has made this country the most diverse. And the Hispanic group contributes to that diversity.
Although it was never intended to be, the acquisition of Puerto Rico resulted in Puerto Rico becoming a colony of the United States, vis-a-vis the laws Congress passed and the nature in which the United States tried to "Americanize" the island. Puerto Rico was a colonial government in the hands of Spain, and although the Puerto Ricans hoped that with American invasion, more freedom would be granted. Unfortunately that did not change when the United States assumed control of the island. The social, economic, and political atmosphere greatly changed as well, and those changes were not necessarily for the better or better than what the Puerto Ricans had while under the control of Spain.
