Cultural differences are cultures from around the world having diverse aspects of living and practices. Businesses often deal with a numerous amount of cultures on a day to day basis, cultures that are unique and have values that are incomparable to their own culture. Canada and China have many cultural differences that would be helpful to understand when doing business with one another. I have noticed that the clothing worn in Canada during the winter and summer season is similar to the apparel worn in China. Canadians wear down coats, insulated boots, gloves, mitts, scarves, and toques throughout the winter season. I know for a fact Canada has very cold winters which is why people wear many layers and down jackets. China also wears similar clothing in order to keep themselves warm, although it is common to see padded jackets instead of down coats. In Canada, we often use knives to cut our food, forks for eating, spoons for soup, plates and bowls for our food, mugs to drink, and napkins to clean up after ourselves. However, it is normal to be eating with chopsticks in China. Chopsticks are brought into the Chinese culture, rather than the knives and forks, because in China's past food required twigs and over time twigs became a cultural norm and seen as an easier way to chop food (Travel China Guide). Spoons, bowls, and napkins are also commonly used to serve themselves food. Since Canada and China have two diverse cultures language would be another contrasting feature. The Chinese Canadians clearly express themselves through their cuisine, their traditions and celebrations, and the popular trends that they brought from China that Canada has now adopted. Authentic Chinese restaurants can be found in and outside of Chinatowns and are enjoyed by Canadians and Chinese Canadians alike. Some popular foods that came from China include sweet and sour pork, dumplings, and spring rolls. Introducing their cuisine within Canada brings more diversity to Canada while also expressing a part of their Chinese culture. Chinese traditions and festivals can be seen in Canada, including Lunar New Years, Chinese Lantern Festival, and Qingming/Tomb Sweeping Day. During these celebrations, Chinese Canadians have the opportunity to share their values and their traditional dances and dress. It’s important that they continue to celebrate traditional festivals because it ensures they will not assimilate and they show Canada that Chinese Canadians are a separate nation within the complex web of Canadian cultures. Lastly, bringing popular trends to Canada help Chinese Canadians affirm their place within the country. For example, Chinese martial arts in a popular activity throughout Canada. Chinese zodiac signs are also popular with some individuals despite it not being a part of their heritage or ethnicity.
