To me, cultural competency in assessment means having the ability to understand, respect, and respond to values and beliefs that are different from my own as a healthcare professional. This includes taking into account each patient’s culture and background when providing medical care to them and planning around the patient’s beliefs. As a healthcare provider, you need to be flexible to alter the treatment plan if something is against their values and beliefs. Many different cultures have a variety of viewpoints on causes of diseases, treatments, and healing beliefs, so you have to be able to adapt to what the patient believes in and wants for their care. Learning about different cultures' main beliefs and values can benefit me by developing myself into a more caring nurse, just by simply knowing the basics of a specific culture. Besides learning more about the variety of cultures, I want to grow my awareness of different cultures. Understanding where the cultures acquire their beliefs and accepting all cultures different from my own can also benefit me in the area of cultural assessment as a nurse. Diving in to learn more about cultures and to understand other cultures will not only help me better understand and treat my patients, but also help me connect more to my patients. I hope to grow and learn cultural skills by improving my communication strategies, limiting biases and judgements towards other cultures, and advocating for patients of all cultures. I believe communication is one of the most important components of the cultural assessment process. Asking the patient questions about their culture can help give the patient a sense of comfort during their care. It is so important to train nurses to provide culturally competent care because this can greatly benefit the nurses by improving the nurse, patient communication but also benefit patients with different cultural backgrounds by improving their healthcare and feelings of greater acceptance in society (erven et al., 2022). Areas I feel I am not comfortable with or unfamiliar with in the case study are working at a refugee camp. When I think of working as a future nurse, I think of the typical nursing job in a hospital or clinic. However, there are a variety of other nursing jobs, like nursing in the military or prisons. For me, working in a refugee camp would make me uncomfortable because of the living conditions the refugees are forced to live in, the lack of funding for the refugees, and the violence that could occur at the camp. An assessment on a person living in a refugee camp would most likely look different than a typical patient assessment because of the lack of resources available, financial instability, and patient
