Cultural competence is defined as the capability of healthcare providers to effectively provide health services to individuals regardless their culture. As it can be observed, culture is not only defined by ethnicity, nationality, or language but encompasses “styles of communicating, way of interacting, views on roles and relationships, values, practices, and customs”1. Nowadays, cultural factors can even be extended to other factors such as gender, sexual orientation, or occupation. Therefore, it is imperative for health educators to understand the meaning of culture in order to adapt their interventions to all factors influencing individuals, or communities’ beliefs and behaviors. Culture can be defined as behaviors exhibited by certain racial, religious, social or ethnic groups. Some factors in which culture may vary include: family structure, education, and socioeconomic status (Kodjo, 2009). Some may think cultural competence is something that has an end point, however, when the big picture is seen, it is a learning process and journey. From the writer’s perspective, the client-therapist relationship can be challenging. Culturally competent therapists must realize that behaviors are shaped by an individual’s culture. Many changes are taking place within the United States cultural makeup. Therapists and healthcare professionals are being challenged to provide effective and sensitive care for patients and their families. This type of culturally sensitive care requires the professional to be open and seek understanding in the patients diverse belief systems (Kodjo, 2009).

With the increase of culturally diverse populations in the United States, it is important for nurses to practice cultural competence. Cultural competence is the ability to acquire specific behaviors, skills, attitudes, and policies in a system that permits “effective work in a cross-cultural setting” (OMH, 2013). With the current change in demographics throughout the workforce, organizations are feeling the effects of a larger percentage of baby boomers retiring and a large percentage of millennial new entrants. The words used to describe millennial employees, “spoiled, trophy kids, ambitious”, seem to be as everlasting as the constructive and negative perspectives attached to them. Many can debate on the entitlement of these employees within an organization, how these employees can be groomed and managed to better fit the organization, the positive and negative attributes they bring into the workplace, and how the preceding can benefit or derail the effectiveness of an organization. Nonetheless, a harder debate, comes about in denying that organizations must adjust to and integrate these employees into the workforce.
Cultural proficiency is seeing the difference and responding effectively in a variety of environments. Learning about organizational and individual culture, in which one can effectively interact in a variety of cultural environments (p. 3). In simple terms in which educators are not only able to effectively work with diverse populations, but also believe that diversity adds positive value to the educational enterprise (Landa, 2011, p. 12).
Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system. I feel that cultural competence traits are a part of my everyday life. I was international friends, in which I accept their language and culture. Through-out my life I have gain an understanding on the GLBTQ community, and I have nothing against the action of this community. I have gain in understanding in the daily activities performed within other cultures as well. With the personal reflection I noticed that everything was either strongly agree or agree. Some of the best connect through-out my life have come was international students, which helps me gain more of an understanding of their culture.
