Cultivation theory is really important theory of mass communication. This theory was developed by Gerbner in 1969 with the objective to explain the effects of television on viewers and phenomena of heavy viewers and low viewers. It provide basis for all the upcoming studies made in the direction of TV’s effect on its viewers. This theory explains that how an individual’s perception of reality can be altered and effected by the heavy viewership of TV. According to Potter (1993), this theory was developed on the base provided by cultural indicator project in 1967 by George Gerbner. Television is a medium which plays an impotent role in socialization of people in their functions in society (Gerbner, 1976). He deduces that realities shown on TV slowly take over the real social reality of the viewers, they started to judge others on the standards developed through television mediated reality (Gerbner, 1976, p. 175). Most commonly use of cultivation theory in any society can be observed through recognized violence (Gerbner, 1976), gender-roles (Morgan, 1983), marriage (Signorielli, 1991), sexuality (Brown, 2002), materialism (Shrum et al., 2005), and all other major topics on TV. One of the major factors behind cultivation theory is how much audience is exposed to content on TV. The United States is the biggest economical power in the world today, and consequently has also the strongest and largest media industry. Therefore, it is essential to take a look at the crucial relationship between the media and the popular culture within the social context of the United States for a better understanding of the issue. For a simpler analysis of the subject we shall divide the media industry into three main branches: Entertainment, News and Commercials (which is the essential device for the survival of the industry, and shall be considered in integration with Entertainment). Researches have shown that the most popular reason behind TV viewing is relaxation and emptying the mind.
In George Gerbner’s lifetime, from the early 1900s to 2005, television was widespread and prevalent. It held great power, for it reached many people across the country. Gerbner phrased the expression “mean world syndrome”; it described the outlook of people who viewed excessive television had towards the world. They regarded the world as a dark and dangerous place influenced by the stories they saw on television. Gerbner’s main takeaway was mostly a negative one; he came to the conclusion that the people who watched television were more fearful, and fearful people are more prone to being manipulated & deceived. A violence-laden society can be a result of television, according to Gerbner.
The invention of the television, made by the collective work of inventors and engineers, has made a big impact on the lives of millions. However, this impact has not always been positive. Television’s potential to connect, educate, and inform is often over-shadowed by the lack of individual responsibility in using this modern day miracle, therefore causing its impact on society to appear negative (Hick, 1). Television has pushed the boundaries of societal values over the last twenty years, leading to the changes in norms and tolerance for different behaviors. It desensitizes humans to violence, sexual content, and crude or racist jokes. Television has given an unrealistic view on life. It has also affected the way people yearn to look by creating the idea of a “perfect” body image. Television has made a mold of society, leading to the end of individuality. Television’s harmful effect on the human brain has definitely played a part in the change of society’s morals. All of these things together are what lead to the way American society is today.
There are numerous studies on the impact of advancing technology on adolescents, usually leading to the conclusion that social media networks often take part in creating the teen to isolate themselves from anything other than the internet. Social media however, does allow anyone to connect to the people living on the other side of the world. It is a way to keep in touch with old friends, and meet new people no matter where they live. Social media is often used to keep up with the latest news and often informs users of what is going on before the news channels catch it. It is obvious that social media has various positive uses. In researching the effects of media on adolescent views of relationships, one must first research if scholars have yet studied and answered if the media has any relationship or effect on adolescents at all. In the research conversation of media influence on adolescents, it has been found that there are five uses of media by adolescents, including entertainment, high sensation, coping, identity formation and youth culture identification (the two latter uses will be highlighted later in this paper) (Arnett, 1995). Adolescence is the stage of life where a child is in the process of developing into a young adult. During this stage in the life course adolescences are experiencing biological growth and development, a state of unidentified status, an increase in important decision making, increased amounts of pressure and the search for one’s self.
