Coming into this course I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was simply the description of Dr. Bernard’s syllabus that held me interested and wanting to learn more. I was never a big movie follower, so I thought it would be interesting to see some of the films that do hold enormous fan based festivals and conventions. Throughout the past several weeks I have not only experience many films that I have not seen before, but I also gained the knowledge of the meaning behind what a cult film is. In the first few weeks we went over the concept of “cult” and how it is usually done in sets of different types of rituals. The likings and awareness of and for these cult films are relatively small in size due to it’s opposition to mainstream. Cult films have many different spins and twists to them, therefore they come with special followings and groups.

Society tends to associate propaganda films with issues such as Nazi Germany and their film messages for their country; however, it is also possible for small independent companies, groups of like-minded people and individuals to use the media of film to incorporate messages for our society (The Independent, 2010). These messages are often in relation to changes that individuals should make in order to improve the standards by which they live their lives and changes to everyday habits that will benefit the individual, the individual’s family, a group of individuals or even a single person (Barnhisel and Turner, 2010).

It is commonplace within films to replicate aspects of society like the formation of cliques, and/or groups that are subsets of the whole population. In these kinds of movies filmmakers indulge in the attributes of these subsection as well as the social orders, which facilitates them. Sociologists, like Norbert Elias, have theorized the creations and replication of social strata within Western society since before the 19th century. Norbert Elias’s infamous works theorized the creation of a unified social control within a civilization and the extrinsic influences of that control on the individuals themselves. An example of his key ideas are inherent in the movie “Divergent” where the presence of an embedded subset group “threatens” the social order and thus becomes a target for eradication.

Watching a movie in the 1920s was a cheap and easy way to be transported into a world of glitz and glamour, a world of crime, or a world of magic and mystery. Some of these worlds included aspects of current events, like war, crime, and advances in technology; while others were completely fictional mysteries, romances, and comedies. Heartbreakers, heartthrobs, comedians and beautiful women dominated movie screens across the country in theaters, called Nickelodeons. Nickelodeons were very basic and small theaters which later transformed into opulent and monumental palaces. When sound was introduced into film by Warner Bros. Pictures, “talkies” took top rank over silent films. “Movies were an art form that had universal appeal. Their essence was entertainment; their success, financial and otherwise, was huge” (1920-30, 3/19/11). Films offered an escape from the troubles of everyday life in the 20s, and moviegoers across the country all shared a universal language: watching movies.

In his essay, “It’s Just a Movie: A Teaching Essay for Introductory Media Classes”, Greg M. Smith argues that analyzing a film does not ruin, but enhances a movie-viewing experience; he supports his argument with supporting evidence. He addresses the careful planning required for movies. Messages are not meant to be telegrams. Audiences read into movies to understand basic plotlines. Viewers should examine works rather than society’s explanations. Each piece contributes to Smith’s argument, movies are worth scrutinizing.
One can learn from Tony’s mistakes. One can learn that family comes first. Society can also learn that taking shortcuts in life sometimes lead to a dead ends with no u-turns. This film showcases the time line of how a drug lord could rise to power from nothing. This film also shows how that same power one gets from becoming a drug lord could be taken at any time. Studying how to analyze a movie has definitely changed my perspective on how I view movies. I actually look at all the detailing in movies. I look at the camera angles and how they affect the scene. I even start to question why the director did not use a different angle for certain shots. By using film theories and criticism one can generate enough ideas in order to understand the movie better. When a film is being captured the director focuses on certain angles and lights to get the meaning of the scene to the audience. Just like everything in life has a meaning, everything in film also has a comparison meaning. This course has widen my intellect on how movies affect our societies. Movies can play a major role in how we act or how laws are even created. Movies has the same power as music. I say movies has the same power because one can look at a movie and want to become whatever he or she saw in the movie. One major skills that I developed in this course is being able to focus.
